The conductance of tetrabutylammonium tetraphenylboride, picrate, perchlorate, and nitrate has been measured at 25°C in mixtures ofi-butyronitrile with chlorobenzene,o-dichlorobenzene,p-dicholorobenzene, 1,2-dichloroethane, andn-pentanol covering the range of dielectric constants 10≤D≤20. In these mixtures of polar solvents, both association constants and ionic mobilities depend on ion-solvent interaction energies and on free volume in a manner that is specific for each system. This failure of the primitive model (rigid charged spheres in a continuum) is shown to be the consequence of short-range spatial and energetic interactions between ions and adjacent solvent molecules.

Determination of the conformation of polymers in the amorphous solid state and in concentrated solution by neutron diffraction

Abstract From the coherent neutron scattering on dilute solid solutions of the ordinary polymer within the deuterated polymer, conformation parameters of polymer chains in amorphous solid states can be determined. In this way vitreous poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) has been investigated. The chains form unperturbed coils and the radius of gyration is very near to the corresponding value in dilute solutions of the same polymer in the low molecular θ-solvent butyl chloride. Restrictions for asymmetry and polarizations of recoil in muon capture

Abstract Using the helicity formalism, we discuss muon capture by targets of spin-zero. Owing to the definite neutrino helicity, three independent observables define a complete experiment. The precise relation between asymmetry α and longitudinal polarization P L of recoil, α = 1 + 2 jP L , comes only from rotational invariance. When time-reversal invariance is inserted, there is an additional restriction between the average polarization P av and the longitudinal polarization P L . On the basis of the experimental result P av = 0.43 ± 0.10 for 12 C, we predict P L = −(0.99 +0.01 −0.04 .

Effect of L-Histidine on the Survival of a T-Strain of Mycoplasma

The addition of L-histidine to the growth medium prolongs the stationary phase and the survival of a T-strain of mycoplasma. Results of an experiment performed with 14 C-labeled urea demonstrate that the action of L-histidine is based on the retardation of the rise of pH.

The influence of olfactory and visual prey stimuli on the feeding behaviour of toads was studied as well as their response to lasting olfactory cues. A further aim was to find simple methods for testing olfactory responsiveness in anurans. Subjects were 8 adult specimens of the European species Bufo calamita (natterjack) kept in captivity one year at least. The results point to the role of olfaction in these animals.

Die Cuticula oberhalb des Transportepithels besitzt die Fahigkeit zur Chloridakkumulation. Die wesentliche Funktion des Transportepithels besteht wahrscheinlich in der Absorption von Ionen und Wasser.

Intrinsic magnetic polarizability contribution to susceptibility of dense neutron matter

It is shown that, apart from the neutron interaction contribution to the susceptibility of neutron stars, there is an additional contribution coming from the magnetic polarizability beta /sub n/ of individual neutrons. For beta /sub n/ approximately=10/sup -4/fm/sup 3 /, this part overwhelms the interaction contribution for k/sub F/>or approximately=3.5fm/sup -1/. No transition to ferromagnetic state is predicted in the interesting density region.

Manometrische untersuchungen zur oesophagusbeteiligung bei progressiver sklerodermie

Bei 15 Patienten mit progressiver Sklerodermie wurde die Oesophagus funktion manometrisch und radiologisch untersucht. Nur ein Drittel der Patienten gab Schluckbeschwerden an. Dagegen liesen sich radiologisch bei 8 Patienten (55%) deutliche Motilitatsstorungen nachweisen, mit der Oesophagusmanometrie sogar bei 11 Patienten (73%). Fehlende subjektive Symptome schliesen demnach einen ausgedehnten Befall der Speiserohre nicht aus. Die manometrischen Messungen zeigen, das mit einer Beteiligung der Speiserohre im odematos-indurativen Stadium der Sklerodermie in einem wesentlichen hoheren Prozentsatz gerechnet werden mus, als ublicherweise aufgrund von Rontgenuntersuchungen allein angenommen wurd…

It is based on an adaptation of projection methods [8], [12], [13], [14], [18], [19] to the modified Gaus-Newton method [4], [10]. Summary The activity of allantoinase (EC 3.5.2.5) is influenced by light and darkness. The extracts of dark-grown moss protonema showed a very higher enzyme activity than the extracts of light-grown plants. The allantoinase activity was increased by light-dark and decreased by dark-light transitions. DMAP mimicked light effects by stabelizing the charakteristic light depending enzyme avctivities in the dark. The inhibitors DCMU, DNP and CCCP increased the enzyme activity of light-grown moss protonema, to some extend they induced a “physiological dark condition”.
