CCTV-FullyAware: toward end-to-end feasible privacy-enhancing and CCTV forensics applications
2022
It is estimated that over 1 billion Closed-Circuit Television (CCTV) cameras are operational worldwide. The advertised main benefits of CCTV cameras have always been the same; physical security, safety, and crime deterrence. The current scale and rate of deployment of CCTV cameras bring additional research and technical challenges for CCTV forensics as well, as for privacy enhancements. This paper presents the first end-to-end system for CCTV forensics and feasible privacy-enhancing applications such as exposure measurement, CCTV route recovery, CCTV-aware routing/navigation, and crowd-sourcing. For this, we developed and evaluated four complex and distinct modules (CCTVCV [1], OSRM-CCTV [2],…
Accurate Multilayered Shell Buckling Analysis via the Implicit-Mesh Discontinuous Galerkin Method
2022
A novel formulation for the linear buckling analysis of multilayered shells is presented. High-order equivalent-single-layer shell theories based on the through-the-thickness expansion of the covariant components of the displacement field are employed. The novelty of the formulation regards the governing equations solution via implicit-mesh discontinuous Galerkin method. It is a high-order accurate numerical technique based on a discontinuous representation of the solution among the mesh elements and on the use of suitably defined boundary integrals to enforce the continuity of the solution at the inter-element interfaces as well as the boundary conditions. Owing to its discontinuous natur…
Ag5 nanoclusters with dual catalytic antiradical activities
2022
Silver nanoclusters of five atoms (Ag5) display outstanding catalytic activities for the deactivation of radicals. Using 2,2-diphenyl-1‑picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) radical as a model system, we observed a fast radical reduction to DPPH anions using only [Ag5] 3 to 4 orders of magnitude less than [DPPH]. Moreover, nanoclusters remain stable at the end of the reaction, and can deactivate again DPPH radicals at the same rate, indicating that they act as anti-radical catalysts. The radical scavenger catalytic activity of Ag5 proceeds selectively through the oxidation of methanol (used to dissolve the radical) to formaldehyde, which is supported by DFT calculations. The obtained catalytic rate constan…
Rethinking inner areas. A multidisciplinary approach to the revival of the territories.
2022
[...] Our little villages have never been as interesting as they are now, they have the feel of the past and still manage to take in even the atmosphere of this time. They have strengths and intensities that we don’t know how to draw on because we don’t look at them, we don’t know how to love them. [...] There is discomfort, there is loneliness, but there is also beauty. This is the starting point, the proper use of our ruins. Introduction. Into the Translation for Museums, Festivals, and the Stage: Creativity and the Transmedial Turn
2022
With the objective of scrutinising general standards, specific criteria and levels of creativity applied to translation practices, especially in light of recent research in audiovisual consumption and reception, creativity and transcreation, and arts accessibility and translation for the arts, the special issue seeks to contextualise the numerous shifts within the artisitc sector in relation to the theoretical and practical challenges that our increasingly technological culture poses for the modes of translation and accessibility. Contributors shed light upon a variety of cultural areas where translation, often combined with creativity, intervenes to localise aesthetic products under the ne…
Are robots in rich countries a threat for employment in emerging economies?
2022
The effects of robotization on labor market outcomes have been widely investigated within developed countries. Conversely, few studies have tried to assess how automation in advanced economies affects less industrialized countries. In this work, we analyze the impact of robotization in a group of developed European countries (EU15) on employment dynamics in a country-industry panel data of emerging markets. Our findings indicate that EU15 robotization is associated with a decline of sectoral employment in emerging economies, especially in Asia, tradable and more robotized industries. Ultimately, a small set of major European countries - namely, Germany, Italy, Denmark and United Kingdom - s…
A new framework for the time- and frequency-domain assessment of high-order interactions in networks of random processes
2022
While the standard network description of complex systems is based on quantifying the link between pairs of system units, higher-order interactions (HOIs) involving three or more units often play a major role in governing the collective network behavior. This work introduces a new approach to quantify pairwise and HOIs for multivariate rhythmic processes interacting across multiple time scales. We define the so-called O-information rate (OIR) as a new metric to assess HOIs for multivariate time series, and present a framework to decompose the OIR into measures quantifying Granger-causal and instantaneous influences, as well as to expand all measures in the frequency domain. The framework ex…

Cultural diversity and clashing narratives about national culture: A Central European stoic pragmatist perspective
2022
Abstract It is amazing how polarizing and, at the same time, ahistorical narratives can be heard about the problems discussed, especially in Anglophone countries in recent times, and on social media: identity policy, cultural policy, racism, patriotism, white privilege, patriarchy, sexism, gender, and others. Stoic pragmatism is not in agreement with the most recent populism and neo-tribalistic class of narratives, which highlight division and the polarization of groups of people against other groups of people as the very axis of argumentation. Even more importantly, stoic pragmatists, especially those who happen to have a Central and Eastern European sensibility, may insist on the specific…

Vaccinazione anti COVID-19 e consenso del minore ultrasedicenne
2022
The essay focuses the issue of minor's informed consent in connection with COVID-19 vaccination in English and Italian legal systems The starting point in the English legal system is the Gillick competence criterion, in accordance with a well-known House of Lords precedent of 1985 on minor’s informed consent, in order to verify the ability of the minor regarding the choice to undergo COVID-19 vaccination. At the same time on the level of Italian law, given the lack of a general criterion such as Gillick competence, some judicial interventions, albeit in a fragmentary way, have already opened to the recognition of a sort of pre-capacity to act to over 16 minors in some areas, even in the abs…
Adaptive Backstepping Control of Uncertain Nonlinear Systems With Input and State Quantization
2022
Though it is common in network control systems that the sensor and control signals are transmitted via a common communication network, no result is available in investigating the stabilization problem for uncertain nonlinear systems with both input and state quantization. The issue is solved in this paper, by presenting an adaptive backstepping based control algorithm for the systems with sector bounded input and state quantizers. In addition to overcome the difficulty to proceed recursive design of virtual controls with quantized states, the relation between the input signal and error state need be well established to handle the effects due to quantization. It is shown that all closed-loop…
Clinical complexity and diabetes: a multidimensional approach for the management of cardiorenal metabolic syndrome
2022
: Diabetes mellitus (DM) is one of the fastest-growing health emergencies of the 21st century, and one of the chronic diseases with the highest socio-economic impact on health care systems. DM is the main cause of chronic kidney disease, and is associated with a significant increase in cardiovascular risk and clinical and care complexity. The presence of a constellation of cardiac, metabolic, and renal diseases, in a complex patient with DM, constitutes the CardioRenal Metabolic Syndrome (CRMS). The management of these patients should include a paradigm shift from a reactive strategy to a proactive approach, and the integration of territorial, hospital and social assistance services accordi…
Emulsions based on fatty acid from vegetable oils for cosmetics
2022
Vegetable oils are sources of saturated, monounsaturated and polyunsaturated fatty acids. In this work, we studied the suitability of a mixture of vegetable oils and some fatty acids (similar to the those of the human skin) as a cosmetic emulsion. Hypericum (Hypericum perforatum L.) – 1 %, thistle (Silybum marianum (L.) Gaertn.) – 42 %, linen (Línum usitatíssimum L.) – 1.1 %, wheat germ (Triticum aestivum L.) – 1 %, sesame (Sésamum índicum L.) – 1 %, mustard (Sinápis álba L.) – 2%, pumpkin (Cucúrbita p é po L.) – 5 %, – were selected as vegetable oils. The emulsion based on the proposed mixture of vegetable oils has a higher antioxidant activity (1.623 OD) compared with that based on minera…
Responsabilità civile e pandemia
2022

High-pressure study of the aurophilic topological Dirac material AuI
2022
We endeavour to explore the high-pressure study in the aurophilic AuI within the state-of-the-art of first principles. The impediment of expressing precise ground-state features of aurophilic compounds that had afflicted prior theoretical research has been resolved by incorporating van der Waals corrections (vdw). Mechanical and dynamical stability are ensured at ambient using the computed elastic constants and phonon dispersion curves. The dynamical instability is triggered by the application of pressure in AuI, as evidenced by the softening of an acoustic mode (Eu) at ∼7 GPa. Non-adherence of estimated elastic constants to the Born stability criterion at this pressure illustrates the syst…

Hans Grimms "Volk ohne Raum": Geschichte einer unveröffentlichten Übersetzung
2022

Mismatch, Empowerment, Fatigue or Balance? Four scenarios of physical activity up to 2030 in Finland
2022
Sedentary lifestyles and the lack of physical activity (PA) are a major concern among all age groups, and current generations tend to be less fit than the previous ones in the Western World. At the same time, there is an urgent need to cut transport-related carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions. Major gains can be foreseen if current car-centred lifestyles and sedentary behaviour are addressed from an integrated perspective. In this study, we explore future scenarios in the intersections of PA and active lifestyles as well as related environmental and health benefits in Finland. We used a disaggregative Delphi approach to examine the topic. Although frequently used in health-related research, Delp…

The Positive Effects of Video Games on the Human Mind
2022
Abstract In order to gain insight into how to create a successful game, a developer should learn about the end user of the product, the player. For this exact reason, there must be a deeper understanding of the effects games can have on the one who plays them. The main question addressed in this paper is “How can the games positively affect the player on a psychological and emotional level?”. This question has been divided into 3 different sub-question. To answer them, a combination of thematic analysis and literature study was used. Multiple studies have been previously made on the relationship between video games and the human mind, either focusing on the negative or on the positive effec…
Partenope in festa. Musiche e spettacoli per le nozze di Carlo di Borbone e Maria Amalia di Sassonia (Napoli, 1738)
2022
The celebrations held in Naples for the wedding of King Charles of Bourbon to Maria Amalia of Saxony (1738) offer an interesting example of political propaganda implemented by means of a wise use of feasts. The court, the ecclesiastical institutions and the city authorities compete to honor the important dynastic event and spread a climate of exultation and consensus. The numerous initiatives aim to strengthen the union between the Bourbons and the Wettins and their respective cultures through a dense network of symbols and allegories. In this complex and stratified context, musical events – hosted in the most diverse venues and arranged along a well-thought-out calendar – play a fundamenta…
Oblio, identità e verità (parte seconda)
2022
Laura Bianchini. Dall'associazionismo cattolico all'impegno in politica
2022
Laura Bianchini (1903 - 1983) was among those women who first crossed the threshold of the "palaces" of politics. She was a member of the National Council, then of the Constituent Assembly and deputy of the Chamber during the first legislature. Teacher and publicist, he knew how to combine spirituality and political and civil commitment. Militant in the Resistance, exponent of the Catholic women's movement, representative of the left current of the Christian Democrats. His spiritual formation and his cultural setting of a personalist and community type is due not only to his militancy within the FUCI and the Graduate Movement, but also to the Catholic environment in Brescia and to the influ…
