Moving Immune Checkpoint Inhibitors to Early Non-Small Cell Lung Cancer: A Narrative Review

2022

Simple Summary Moving from the achievements of immune checkpoint inhibitors in metastatic lung cancer, the great promise of immunotherapy in resectable early-stage is to make a disease, often lethal until now for frequent post-surgery relapses, more curable. This review focuses on role of immunotherapy in early-stage non-small cell lung cancer. We summarize biological rationale, findings from clinical trials of adjuvant and neoadjuvant immune checkpoint inhibitors, questions about biomarkers and choice of endpoints, aiming to provide up-to-date information useful for clinical decision making. Lung cancer is the leading cause of cancer-related death worldwide. Since prognosis of early-stage …

On the statistics of pairs of logarithms of integers

2022

We study the statistics of pairs of logarithms of positive integers at various scalings, either with trivial weights or with weights given by the Euler function, proving the existence of pair correlation functions. We prove that at the linear scaling, which is not the usual scaling by the inverse of the average gap, the pair correlations exhibit a level repulsion similar to radial distribution functions of fluids. We prove total loss of mass phenomena at superlinear scalings, and constant nonzero asymptotic behavior at sublinear scalings. The case of Euler weights has applications to the pair correlation of the lengths of common perpendicular geodesic arcs from the maximal Margulis cusp nei…

A Bibliometric Analysis of the Spanish Scientific Production on Teaching Oral Communication Between 2010 and 2020

2022

This research paper aims to analyse the visibility, scientific production and educational impact of teaching spoken language between 2010 and 2020 by using bibliometric techniques. The Scopus and Web of Science databases have been used in order to carry out the study. We have selected articles published in journals included in the thematic category of Teaching Oral Communication in the decade 2010-2020. Out of 2677 articles, only 457 offer relevant data for our analysis, and of these, no more than 155 documents are written by Spanish authors. The lack of articles on this topic seems obvious, which consequently leads to the conclusion that there is a high need to conduct rigorous research on…

Variation in human water turnover associated with environmental and lifestyle factors

2022

Water is essential for survival, but one in three individuals worldwide (2.2 billion people) lacks access to safe drinking water. Water intake requirements largely reflect water turnover (WT), the water used by the body each day. We investigated the determinants of human WT in 5604 people from the ages of 8 days to 96 years from 23 countries using isotope-tracking ( 2 H) methods. Age, body size, and composition were significantly associated with WT, as were physical activity, athletic status, pregnancy, socioeconomic status, and environmental characteristics (latitude, altitude, air temperature, and humidity). People who lived in countries with a low human development index (HDI) had highe…

Evolutionary Psychology and Normal Science: in Search of a Unifying Research Program

2022

AbstractWhy are there so many controversies in evolutionary psychology? Using a couple of concepts from philosophy of science, this paper argues that evolutionary psychology has not reached the stage of mature, normal science, since it does not currently have a unifying research program that guides individual scientists working in the discipline. The argument goes against claims made by certain proponents and opponents of evolutionary psychology, and it is supported by discussion of several examples. The paper notes that just because evolutionary psychology has not reached the stage of normal science, the discipline is nevertheless a source of many progressive theoretical developments and i…

Social capital and oral health promotion: Past, present, and future challenges

2022

Social capital has been widely inserted in health discussions in recent decades. In this sense, social capital has become a popular term and has been highlighted as one of the main determinants of health in the conceptual framework of the social determinants of the World Health Organization. The concept of social capital focuses on the positive consequences of sociability and places these consequences in the broader discussion of capital. In this sense, social capital reflects the benefits that individuals and communities derive from having broad social networks or high levels of social trust. Despite controversies regarding its definition and numerous criticisms, a growing body of evidence…

A Group-Based 8-Week Functional Interval-Type Outdoor Training Program Improves Physical Performance in Recreationally Active Adults

2022

Even though physical activity is an important aspect of health, lack of time or motivation impede people from working out regularly. One type of training program that is both efficient and motivating is functional interval-type outdoor training. To evaluate this, our study had 81 participants complete a battery of physical performance tests (incremental treadmill test, core stability test and functional fitness test) before and after an 8-week outdoor interval-type training intervention. Training procedures included multimodal and high-intensity exercises performed in consistent, small groups. Results showed that the interval training program produced significant increases in the interventi…

Cigarette Smoke Extract Induces p38 MAPK-Initiated, Fas-Mediated Eryptosis

2022

Eryptosis is a physiological mechanism for the clearance of senescent or damaged erythrocytes by phagocytes. Excessive eryptosis is stimulated under several pathologies and associated with endothelial injury and thrombosis. Cigarette smoke (CS) is an established risk factor for vascular diseases and cigarette smokers have high-levels of eryptotic erythrocytes. This study, for the first time, investigates the mechanism by which CS damages red blood cells (RBCs). CS extract (CSE) from commercial cigarettes was prepared and standardized for nicotine content. Cytofluorimetric analysis demonstrated that treatment of human RBCs with CSE caused dose-dependent, phosphatidylserine externalization an…

Valorization of saltwork brines for the production of acid and base using electrodialysis with bipolar membranes

2022

Valorization of brines, usually considered as wastes, has become an alternative to extract critical and valuable raw materials, but also for energy recovery and generation of reactants. Within this context, the H2020 SEArcularMINE project aims to recover from saltwork brines Mg(II), Li(I) and some trace elements (B(III), Co(II) and Sr(II), among others), all of them listed as critical raw materials by the European Union [1]. Due to the fact that the technologies devoted to the recovery of the above mentioned elements require acid and bases, the SEArcularMINE project aims to produce them in-situ (HCl and NaOH) from exhausted brines (free of Mg(II) and Ca(II)) using Electrodialysis with Bipol…

Mislabeling and nomenclatorial confusion of Typhlotanais sandersi Kudinova-Pasternak, 1985 (Crustacea: Tanaidacea) and establishment of a new genus

2022

Re-examination of historical collections allowed us to resolve the taxonomic status of Typhlotanais sandersi Kudinova-Pasternak, 1985, originally described based on a single specimen from Great-Meteor Seamount. The holotype of this species was considered lost and the species redescribed based on a second specimen from the type locality by Błażewicz-Paszkowycz (2007a), who placed Ty. sandersi on a newly established genus Typhlamia. Thorough morphological analysis of Typhlamia and Typhlotanais species and recently obtained genetic data of typhlotanaids from N Atlantic and NW Pacific waters allow us to conclude that the redescription of Ty. sandersi by Błażewicz-Paszkowycz (2007a) was based on…

The Landscape as a Silent Witness of a Fragile Memory in Paweł Pawlikowski’s 2013 Film Ida

2022

This article focuses on Paweł Pawlikowski’s 2013 film Ida, analysing how the formal and aesthetic aspects question silent witnesses about the difficult past using pictures as a useful testifier. In the context of Poland’s national memory, its current political discourse and the Polish-Jewish relations during World War II, Ida offers a significant contribution. The process of scrutinising this difficult past becomes a journey, a troublesome event when a remembrance must be constructed and experienced. The film journey offers a possibility to get back to this period of time and encourages us to pose certain questions: how do sites of memory remain with us through cinematographic or photograph…

Recycling Phosphorus from Agricultural Streams: Grey and Green Solutions

2022

Many intensively farmed soils show high phosphorus (P) contents compared to the thresholds required for agricultural production; 0.084 Mt of P year−1 is leaving the European terrestrial system. This paper focuses mainly on non-point flows of P and provides an overview of the most promising and sustainable solutions for P recycling, centred on waste materials from agriculture. Given the global shortage of the primary resource of P, its management is critical for its efficient use. Nowadays, wastage and loss at every stage of the P cycle raise concerns about future supplies and especially about the resulting environmental problems, such as the eutrophication of surface water bodies and the re…

Accurate Wound and Lice Detection in Atlantic Salmon Fish Using a Convolutional Neural Network

2022

The population living in the coastal region relies heavily on fish as a food source due to their vast availability and low cost. This need has given rise to fish farming. Fish farmers and the fishing industry face serious challenges such as lice in the aquaculture ecosystem, wounds due to injuries, early fish maturity, etc. causing millions of fish deaths in the fish aquaculture ecosystem. Several measures, such as cleaner fish and anti-parasite drugs, are utilized to reduce sea lice, but getting rid of them entirely is challenging. This study proposed an image-based machine-learning technique to detect wounds and the presence of lice in the live salmon fish farm ecosystem. A new equally di…

Behavior of Calcium Phosphate–Chitosan–Collagen Composite Coating on AISI 304 for Orthopedic Applications

2022

Calcium phosphate/chitosan/collagen composite coating on AISI 304 stainless steel was investigated. Coatings were realized by galvanic coupling that occurs without an external power supply because it begins with the coupling between two metals with different standard electrochemical potentials. The process consists of the co-deposition of the three components with the calcium phosphate crystals incorporated into the polymeric composite of chitosan and collagen. Physical-chemical characterizations of the samples were executed to evaluate morphology and chemical composition. Morphological analyses have shown that the surface of the stainless steel is covered by the deposit, which has a very r…

A new process for resourse recovery from surface water RO brine from permeate remineralization

2022

Low-Pressure Reverse Osmosis (LPRO) membranes could be valuable alternatives to conventional surface water potabilization processes [1] thanks to a combined ability to: remove micropollutants, soften, disinfect and remove organic substances. However, these processes produce an aggressive permeate and a concentrated brine with discharge constraints [2]. Assisted Reverse Electrodialysis (A-RED, [3]) was tested for LPRO permeate remineralization by recovery of target minerals from the corresponding LPRO brine while maintaining the product water’s integrity with respect to the organic compounds present in the concentrate. Bench-scale experiments were carried out with SUEZ-WTS membranes (CR67T-A…

Propagation of Bankruptcy Risk over Scale-Free Economic Networks.

2022

The propagation of bankruptcy-induced shocks across domestic and global economies is sometimes very dramatic; this phenomenon can be modelled as a dynamical process in economic networks. Economic networks are usually scale-free, and scale-free networks are known to be vulnerable with respect to targeted attacks, i.e., attacks directed towards the biggest nodes of the network. Here we address the following question: to what extent does the scale-free nature of economic networks and the vulnerability of the biggest nodes affect the propagation of economic shocks? We model the dynamics of bankruptcies as the propagation of financial contagion across the banking sector over a scale-free network…
