Hybrid Work: Gen Z Expectations and Internal Employer Branding Implications

2022

Gen Z – also known as ‘Generation Z’ or ‘iGeneration’ born between 1997 and 2009 – has been hit the hardest by the pandemic and remote work. Whilst the global workforce will include nearly 27% of Gen Z by 2025, it appears essential to address their needs and preferences. This chapter provides new Gen Z white-collar workers’ insights hitherto scarce in research – comparably to those of Gen Z students – to help understand how to motivate, engage, and develop them. In particular, Gen Z's values and expectations for hybrid work emerge from 15 qualitative online interviews leveraged to advance recommendations to enhance internal employer branding – that is branding intended for the organisation’…

Design and Validation of a Dynamic Inductive Power Transfer System for EV Battery Charging

2022

In this paper, a Dynamic Resonant Inductive Power Transfer (DRIPT) System for the Electric Vehicle (EV) battery charging is proposed. In particular, the aim of the work is the general design of the whole system and its validation, with particular attention to the power electronic converters and their control. For the transmitter side, a DC/AC converter is used. It is controlled through the phase-shift technique and supervised by a Zero Phase Angle detection algorithm to ensure the maximum power transfer. For the receiver side, a double conversion stage, consisting of a diode rectifier and a controlled buck converter, is provided. The system is then simulated to verify its proper design.

Unpacking social innovation by nonstate service providers in the challenging social work practice

2022

Nonstate service providers in the form of nongovernmental organizations (NGOs) play an important role in the delivery of social services and the development of social work practice, in particular in fragile and conflict-affected countries. In such challenging settings, NGOs also mobilize various resources, implement novel activities or service delivery models that may induce the development of social innovation; however, such perspectives have been overlooked in the social work literature. This study outlines a framework for understanding how social innovation generates by nonstate service providers in a challenging social work context. By analyzing 15 interviews from Bosnia and Herzegovina…

RNA-Binding Proteins as Epigenetic Regulators of Brain Functions and Their Involvement in Neurodegeneration.

2022

A central aspect of nervous system development and function is the post-transcriptional regulation of mRNA fate, which implies time- and site-dependent translation, in response to cues originating from cell-to-cell crosstalk. Such events are fundamental for the establishment of brain cell asymmetry, as well as of long-lasting modifications of synapses (long-term potentiation: LTP), responsible for learning, memory, and higher cognitive functions. Post-transcriptional regulation is in turn dependent on RNA-binding proteins that, by recognizing and binding brief RNA sequences, base modifications, or secondary/tertiary structures, are able to control maturation, localization, stability, and tr…

Comparison of validation protocols for blood pressure measuring devices in children and adolescents

2022

Accuracy of blood pressure (BP) measurement is important for the evaluation of hypertension in children and adolescents, and it is critically dependent upon the accuracy of the BP measuring device. A device that could pass validated protocols with reliable accuracy would be desirable in clinical and research settings. Several scientific organizations have published recommendations on the validation of different BP measuring devices. Most of them focus on adults but separate recommendations and validation criteria for BP devices intended for use in children and adolescents are included in some validation protocols. In this review, we compare the validation criteria for BP measuring devices a…

Abnormal jugular valves are not the sole explanation of an impaired outflow from the cranial cavity through the internal jugular veins: results of in…

2022

Background. Currently, pathological jugular valves are thought to be the main cause of altered hemodynamics in the internal jugular veins, the so-called chronic cerebrospinal venous insufficiency. The alternative interpretation of flow disturbances in these veins is that the main source of abnormal outflow are nozzle-like strictures in their upper parts, at the level or just below the jugular foramen, for example, caused by an enlarged transverse process of the atlas and/or styloid process of the temporal bone.1 These in silico studies were aimed at validation of this hypothesis.

Tactics of invisibility : How people in vulnerable positions make datafied everyday life livable

2022

Various data platforms force the individual into constant presence and visibility. However, the ways in which datafied environments relate to experienced vulnerabilities in our everyday lives remain unclear. Through diaries produced by and interviews with participants from three groups who occupy presumably vulnerable positions and who currently live in Finland, we explore the ways in which people challenge expectations and prior assumptions related to forced visibility. Using the concept of tactics developed by de Certeau, we aim to understand how individuals make everyday surveillance culture livable through what we call tactics of invisibility. Based on our analysis, we identify three k…

Novel high-performance QCA Fredkin gate and designing scalable QCA binary to gray and vice versa

2022

AbstractIn the design of digital logic circuits, QCA technology is an excellent alternative to CMOS technology. Its advantages over CMOS include low power consumption, fast circuit switching, and nanoscale design. Circuits that convert data between different formats are code converters. Code converters have an essential role in high-performance computing and signal processing. In this paper, first, we proposed a novel QCA structure for the quantum reversible Fredkin gate. Second, we proposed 4-bit and 8-bit QCA binary-to-gray converter and vice versa. For the second proposal, both reversible and irreversible structures are suggested. The proposed structures are scalable up to N bits. To cha…

Long-Term Stability of TiS2–Alkylamine Hybrid Materials

2022

Layered TiS2 intercalated with linear alkylamines has recently attracted significant interest as a model compound for flexible n-type thermoelectric applications, showing remarkably high power factors at room temperature. The thermal and, particularly, environmental stability of such materials is, however, a still an open challenge. In this paper, we show that amine-intercalated TiS2 prepared by a simple mechanochemical process is prone to chemical decomposition through sulfur exsolution, and that the presence of molecular oxygen is likely to mediate the decomposition reaction. Through computational analysis of the possible reaction pathways, we propose that Ti-N adducts are formed as a con…

AI for Resource Allocation and Resource Allocation for AI: a two-fold paradigm at the network edge

2022

5G-and-beyond and Internet of Things (IoT) technologies are pushing a shift from the classic cloud-centric view of the network to a new edge-centric vision. In such a perspective, the computation, communication and storage resources are moved closer to the user, to the benefit of network responsiveness/latency, and of an improved context-awareness, that is, the ability to tailor the network services to the live user's experience. However, these improvements do not come for free: edge networks are highly constrained, and do not match the resource abundance of their cloud counterparts. In such a perspective, the proper management of the few available resources is of crucial importance to impr…
