Ultrasensitive and highly specific detection of iodine ions using zirconium (IV)-enhanced oxidation

2022

Nuclear energy has significantly promoted the development of human society. However, nuclear pollution caused by nuclear accidents can lead to significant hazards to the environment and human health. As a major radioactive product, radioactive iodine (mainly existing as I−) detection has attracted significant attentions. In this study, zirconium(IV) is used to enhance the oxidation of environmental I− to form I2. Subsequently, the generated I2 oxidizes the chemical chromogenic substrate 3,3′,5,5′-tetramethylbenzidine, which is used for I− detection and realizes an ultralow limit of detection (LoD) of 0.176 nM. The LoD of our method, to the best of our knowledge, is the lowest among those of…

Theoretical advancements on a recently proposed method to measure rainfall energy

2022

Soil erosion induced by rainfall is mainly due to the rainfall impact besides the consequent surface runoff. Rainfall kinetic energy is the most used variable to represent its erosivity. The latter represents the weathering attitude to erode soil and is a fundamental variable of the erosion process. Consequently, precise measurements of rainfall erosivity have to perform to develop a reliable prediction model of the erosive phenomenon. Currently, impact energy can be reliably measured only by disdrometers. These instruments measure the Drop Size Distribution (DSD) which, joined with the raindrop falling velocity, allow to calculate, by integration, the impact kinetic energy. However, disdro…

3-Methylation alters excited state decay in photoionised uracil.

2022

UV and VUV-induced processes in DNA/RNA nucleobases are central to understand photo-damaging and photo-protecting mechanisms in our genetic material. Here we model the events following photoionisation and electronic excitation in uracil, methylated in the 1′ and 3′ positions, using the correlated XMS-CASPT2 method. We compare our results against those for uracil and 5-methyl-uracil (thymine) previously published. We find 3-methylation, an epigenetic modification in non-negligible amounts, shows the largest differences in photoionised decay of all three derivatives studied compared to uracil itself. At the S0 minimum, 3-methyl-uracil (3mUra) shows almost degenerate excited cation states. Upo…

Young Consumers’ Boycotting Profiles in the UK and Finland : A Comparative Analysis

2022

This study uses latent profile analysis to identify boycotting subgroups within Finland and the UK and to explore their potential differences across countries. These subgroups are based on how young British and Finnish consumers assess that reference groups and their personal experiences have influenced their boycotting decisions. This study is based on comparative data obtained from the UK (n = 1,236) and Finland (n = 1,219). We identified four boycotting profiles: unlikely to be influenced, influenced by personal things, likely to be influenced, and moderately likely to be influenced. Our findings are especially relevant to consumer researchers, brands, and companies. peerReviewed

Unprotected sex among female Italian uni- versity students: A «Calculated Risk»

2022

Contraception is considered a rational strategy to prevent unwanted births. However, beyond the dichotomy of «planned» and «unplanned» pregnancy, behaviours are sometimes ambivalent or contradictory. The present paper inves tigates the reasons beyond the non-use of contraception in Italy by examining a large-scale survey of university students conducted in 2000 and 2017. The findings reveal a small but clearly defined group of young female students, cohabiting with their partner and residing in the South of the country, who have a high frequency of sexual intercourses and do not deliberately use any contra ceptive method. These findings offer population-based evidence about the ex istence o…

A multifaceted field sampling approach for the management of extremely narrow endemic vascular plant species

2022

Extremely narrow endemic plant species (ENEs) are generally connected with micro- refugia characterized by particular environmental conditions. In-depth knowledge of the ecological requirements of ENEs is fundamental to plan appropriate conservation measures. Using cross-cutting technology, this paper gives a multifaceted approach to collect on-site data on the ecology of ENEs, defines the protocols for a correct sampling design and describes the type of equipment, the time and expenditure needed. Our sampling approach is based on two orthogonal transects, long enough to extrapolate the whole ecological gradient across the area of occupancy of the target species. Microclimatic data are reco…

Colorectal infiltrating deep endometriosis: Laparoscopic treatment. A case report

2022

Endometriosis is a disease affecting approximately 10% of women of fertile age. A particular presentation is deep infiltrating endometriosis of the rectosigmoid colon with symptoms that can mimic an intestinal obstruction or neoplasm. We report the case of a 39-year-old woman with pelvic pain during the menstrual cycle and significant anemia who presented an ectopic endometrial tissue in correspondence of the rectum. Because of the thickness of the lesion the patient underwent a segmental laparoscopic colorectal resection with end-to-end anastomosis.

Characteristics and Subjective Evaluation of an Intelligent Empowering Agent for Health Person Empowerment

2022

Empowerment is a process through which people acquire the necessary knowledge and self-awareness to understand their health conditions and treatment options, self-manage them, and make informed choices. Currently, few stand-alone applications for patient empowerment exist and people/patients often go on the Web to search for health information. Such information is mainly obtained through generic search engines and it is often overwhelming, too generic, and of poor quality. Intelligent Empowering Agents (IEA) can filter such information and assist the user in the understanding of health information about specific complaints or health in general. We have designed and developed a first prototy…

Factor Structure and Measurement Invariance of the Spanish Burnout Inventory Among Professionals Across 17 Countries and Regions

2022

AbstractStudies on the prevalence of burnout in professionals in service organizations who work in direct contact with the clients or users of the organization have concluded that burnout is a serious health disorder that has increased due to the COVID-19 pandemic. A significant advantage of the Spanish Burnout Inventory (SBI) over other instruments is that it provides a broader conceptualization of burnout by including feelings of guilt as a dimension of burnout to explain its development. However, the measurement invariance of the SBI across countries has not been investigated. The purpose of this study was to test the measurement invariance of the SBI among professionals across 17 countr…

Nanostructured Lead Electrodes with Reduced Graphene Oxide for High-Performance Lead–Acid Batteries

2022

Nanostructured Pb electrodes consisting of nanowire arrays were obtained by electrodeposition, to be used as negative electrodes for lead–acid batteries. Reduced graphene oxide was added to improve their performances. This was achieved via the electrochemical reduction of graphene oxide directly on the surface of nanowire arrays. The electrodes with and without reduced graphene oxide were tested in a 5 M sulfuric acid solution using a commercial pasted positive plate and an absorbed glass mat separator in a zero-gap configuration. The electrodes were tested in deep cycling conditions with a very low cut-off potential. Charge–discharge tests were performed at 5C. The electrode wi…

Diagnostic delay of oral squamous cell carcinoma and the fear of diagnosis: A scoping review.

2022

The mortality rate of patients affected with oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC) has been stable in recent decades due to several factors, especially diagnostic delay, which is often associated with a late stage diagnosis and poor prognosis. The aims of this paper were to: analyze diagnostic delay in OSCC and to discuss the various psychological factors of patients with OSCC, with particular attention to the patient’s fear of receiving news regarding their health; and the professional dynamics related to the decision-making processes in cases of suspected OSCC. A preliminary review of literature focusing on OSCC diagnostic delay was performed. Seven articles were included with the diagnosti…

2022

AbstractWe analysed the invasion history of two North American macrophytes (Elodea canadensis and E. nuttallii) in Italy, through an accurate census of all available herbarium and field records, dating between 1850 and 2019, and a rich literature collection describing the initial introduction and naturalisation phase that supports the results obtained by the occurrence records. Elodea canadensis arrived in Italy before 1866 and had two invasion phases, between the 1890s and 1920s and between the 1990s and 2000s; E. nuttallii, probably arrived in the 1970s, started invading in 2000 and the invasion is still ongoing. Botanical gardens and fish farming played a crucial role in dispersal and na…

Theoretical prediction of rainfall intensity for a small rainfall simulator

2022

In this contribution, a theoretical approach was developed for predicting rainfall intensity for a small rainfall simulator. The developed equation was tested for two different devices and different pressure head and water temperature values. The proposed relationship was found to have a good predictive ability of rainfall intensity. The proposed theoretical approach could be usable with other devices that operate on the same principles of the simulator considered in this investigation.

Measuring the USLE soil erodibility factor in the unit plots of Sparacia (southern Italy) experimental area

2022

The Universal Soil Loss Equation (USLE) is still widely used to predict soil loss by water erosion and to establish soil conservation measures. In this model, the soil erodibility factor K accounts for the susceptibility of the soil to be eroded due to the detachment and transport processes operated by the erosive agents. According to the USLE scheme, the K factor should be measured on unit plots, i.e., bare plots of given length (22 m) and steepness (9%) tilled along the maximum slope direction, but there is little evidence that there ever existed an actual unit plot between the plots used to develop the USLE. Given the difficulty in collecting sufficient data to adequately measure K, the …

Sense of country: General and specific factors covary with social identification and predict emigration plans

2022

Theoretical analyses of person–environment interaction describe complex models, addressing different levels of social systems, while models of the sense of community provide a base for transferring views of this interaction to the national level. This paper presents two studies that explored the structure of the sense of country and its relation to emigration plans and social identification. Study 1 involved 1,005 adults from Latvia. The Sense of Country Inventory (SOCI) included influence, perceived opportunities, belonging, and spatiotemporal commitment as the components of this sense. The bifactor model demonstrated the best fit and confirmed the general factor, integrating components of…

2022

Reetta Muhonen ja Taina Saarinen tarkastelevat tässä artikkelissa suomalaisen tiedepolitiikan historiallisia trendejä ja niiden yhtymäkohtia. Samat teemat tuntuvat toistuvan vuodesta toiseen, minkä monesti ajatellaan kertovan tiedepolitiikan heikosta toteutuksesta. Kirjoittajat haluavat kuitenkin ajatella, että näiden teemojen toistuminen kertoo pikemminkin niiden tärkeydestä. nonPeerReviewed

Systemic circulating microRNA landscape in Lynch syndrome

2022

AbstractMicroRNAs (miRs) are non-coding RNA-molecules that regulate gene expression. Global circulating miR (c-miR) expression patterns (c-miRnome) change with carcinogenesis in various sporadic cancers. Therefore, aberrantly expressed c-miRs could have diagnostic, predictive and prognostic potential in molecular profiling of cancers. c-miR functions in carriers of inherited pathogenic mismatch-repair gene variants (path_MMR), also known as Lynch syndrome (LS), have remained understudied. LS cohort provides an ideal population for biomarker mining due to increased lifelong cancer risk and excessive cancer occurrence. Identity and Value of Public Space: Multifaceted and Multicultural Points of View

2022

13C and 15N NMR Detection of Metabolites via Relayed Hyperpolarization at 1 T and 1.4 T

2022

Nuclear-spin hyperpolarization allows various magnetic-resonance applications in chemistry and medicine that are unattainable by standard methods. For such applications, parahydrogen-based hyperpolarization approaches are particularly attractive because of their technical simplicity, low cost, and ability to quickly (in seconds) produce large volumes of hyperpolarized material. Although many parahydrogen-based techniques have emerged, some of them remain unexplored due to the lack of careful optimization studies. In this work, we investigate and optimize a novel parahydrogen-induced polarization (PHIP) technique that relies on proton exchange referred to below as PHIP-relay. An INEPT (insen…

Human capital and the intertemporal substitution for leisure: empirical evidence for Spain

2022

AbstractIn this paper we provide the first estimate of the intertemporal substitution for leisure in Spain, accounting for the impact of human capital accumulation. This would allow uncovering whether the intertemporal labour supply of Spanish workers is affected by human capital. Our empirical strategy consists of estimating the equation for the intertemporal substitution of leisure with and without accounting for human capital, what allows to detect hypothetical estimation biases associated to omitting the impact of human capital. To that end, we build a pseudo-panel data set combining the Spanish Family Expenditure Survey and the Labour Survey over the period 1987–1997. While the model t…

Emergence and early institutionalization of competition in higher education: evidence from Finnish business schools

2022

AbstractThis paper investigates the emergence and early institutionalization of competition in higher education (HE), specifically in business schools. First, building on key contributions from economics, management studies, sociology, and HE research, we develop propositions on competition in HE and formulate our theoretical framework. Second, we apply this framework to explore competition in Finnish business schools. We argue that business schools constitute an interesting field for studying competition in HE because they are the frontrunners and champions of competition-based views in HE. Our main contribution is a novel explanation of the preconditions, emergence, and early processes of…

In the Name of Antigone: Migrants and Human Rights in Contemporary Urban Spaces

2022

Starting from the metaphor of the ethical conflict between dignity and rights in Antigone, the article reflects on the theme of human dignity for a critique of global inequalities. These theoretical assumptions are the basis for reflecting on the theme of contemporary international mobility of populations, which generates significant effects on the production of borders and the right to the city, highlighting new issues of social and spatial justice. In particular, with respect to the “newcomers”, claiming the “right to the city”, after claiming the “right to mobility”, very often coincides with the claim and protection of human rights, in order to build “spaces for survival”. Entangled Assemblages: The Mutual Becoming of Food and More-than-Human Being

2022

AbstractFood and life are intimately entangled. To grasp the underlying complexity of this seemingly simple statement, this article first introduces the approach to food/eating as an assemblage enacted by various heterogeneous components, and further develops it by engaging with actor network theory and material semiotics. Thereafter the focus turns to ‘entanglement’, as inspired by quantum physics, to elicit the basic dynamics of the entanglement of food and more-than-human beings, conceived of as involving mutual and differential becomings within and among assemblages. The article illustrates these entangled becomings by drawing upon examples from Sri Lanka, which in an intercultural phil…
