Dalla morte la vita. Osservazioni intorno alla sacralità del cibo

2022

Since the appearance of Homo erectus, the consumption of meat has been constitutive of human life. Food is sacred because it is derived from the death of other living beings, but depriving these of life constitutes an offence against the gods, so any deprivation of life must take place according to precise rules. Food represents a symbol, and the occasions of its consumption are elective moments both of mediation between the here and the hereafter and of affirmation of the social body. On this awareness, albeit with specific articulations within each culture, the relationship between human beings and gods, and between men and men, has been founded. In increasingly limited contexts, it conti…

TRANSIENT AND FREE-VIBRATION ANALYSIS OF LAMINATED SHELLS THROUGH THE DISCONTINUOUS GALERKIN METHOD

2022

This paper presents a novel formulation for linear transient and free-vibration analysis of laminated shell structures based on Interior Penalty discontinuous Galerkin (DG) methods and variable-order through-the-thickness kinematics, whose combined use allows solving the shell problem with high-order accuracy throughout both the shell thickness and the shell modelling domain. The shell geometry is described via a generic system of curvilinear coordinates using either an analytical or a NURBS-based parametrization of the shell mid surface; the formulation also allows for the presence of cut-outs, which are implicitly represented by means of a level set function. After deriving the governing …

Perdersi. Note sul Labirinto

2022

The paper is inspired by a conversation of its author with Sandro Man- cini. Through a series of self-biographical notes, it tries to examine the topological gure of the labyrinth in some of its main mythical- symbolic, mathematical and conceptual articulations. Starting from a famous essay by Italo Calvino, i.e. La s da al labirinto, it seeks in par- ticular to discuss the works of Pierre Rosenstiehl, mathematician and philosopher to whom we owe some of the most re ned analyses on the subject of labyrinth. In the conclusions, after some other short intro- spective remarks, one aims at raising the necessity of more systematic and deepened investigations about this subject.

Tracking cruise passengers' consumption: An analysis of the relationships between onshore mobility and expenditure

2022

This paper analyzes the relationships between the spatial behaviour and destination expenditures of cruise tourists by integrating customer surveys and GPS tracking technology. Based on data collated in 2018 and 2019 in Copenhagen, cruise passenger expenditure was modelled via logistic regression, using socio-demographic characteristics and mobility-related variables. In order to map the spatial behaviour and the key characteristics of the itinerary followed, tracking data were synthesized into meaningful mobility variables. An analysis of stops was performed to identify locations with the potential highest expenditure density. The results indicated that spatial movement and, in particular,…

Consequences of personalized product recommendations and price promotions in online grocery shopping

2022

Shopping convenience can be turned into a competitive advantage for online grocery retailers. Consequently, we study how personalized product recommendations (recommendation agents) and price promotions (algorithmic pricing) compensate for the negative impact that consumer's perceived cognitive effort causes on loyalty. By default, the relationship from perceived cognitive efforts to attitudinal and behavioral loyalty is negative, yet these results demonstrate that personalized price promotions lessen the negative impact, while personalized product recommendations do not have such an influence. The findings contribute to a better understanding of personalized marketing activities in today's…

Transmission Optimization and Resource Allocation for Wireless Powered Dense Vehicle Area Network With Energy Recycling

2022

The wireless-powered communication paradigm brings self-sustainability to the on-vehicle sensors by harvesting the energy from radiated radio frequency (RF) signals. This paper proposes a novel transmission and resource allocation strategy for the scenario where multiple wireless powered vehicle area networks (VAN) co-existed with high density. The considered multi-VAN system consists of a remote master access point (MAP), multiple on-vehicle hybrid access points (HAPs) and sensors. Unlike previous works, we consider that the sensors can recycle the radiated radio frequency energy from all the HAPs when HAPs communicate with MAP, so the dedicated signals for energy harvesting (EH) are unnec…

2022

The work proposes an analysis of the various tools that can be invoked to bridge some frictions of the credit system in areas where the banking "service" is characterized by essentiality, such as in the case of bank account. The inefficiency of the traditional code regulations emerges with particular evidence when the recourse to banking intermediation is imposed by specific rules functionality to public interests, as in case of imposed virtual currency payments. The incidence of the cost of the service, often not adequately remunerated by the price, can cause an indiscriminate selection of customers, permitted by contractual rules that authorize the end of the relationship without requirin…

The pivotal role of students’ absorptive capacity in management learning

2022

Within a research context dominated by an increasing interest in innovative learning method- ologies in management education, an individual’s capacity to establish links between existing and new knowledge, that is, absorptive capacity (AC), has been surprisingly neglected in management (higher) education inquiry. This study helps to close this gap by investigating the role of management students’ AC on their academic performance. The study also examines the moderating effect on this relationship of using traditional learning methodologies (such as lectures), innovative learning methodologies (such as interacting with digital platforms), and having a cooperative climate in the classroom. Nutrient recovery from wastewater treatment by ultrafiltration membrane for water reuse in view of a circular economy perspective

2022

The study aims to recover nitrogen from wastewater by employing ultrafiltration membrane in water reuse for agriculture purpose. To such aim, a new reclaimed water quality index (RWQI) is proposed and applied including an innovative protocol for its assessment. Specifically, the influence of filtration and backwashing times for an ultrafiltration system aimed to nutrient recovery has been analyzed. The final goal was to pin down the trade-off between operation costs and effluent quality. Results show that backwashing time play a crucial role in reducing the operation costs; indeed, low values (i.e., 0.5 min) lead to an increase in the number of required chemical cleanings and consequently o…

Violation-mitigation-based method for PV hosting capacity quantification in low voltage grids

2022

Hosting capacity knowledge is of great importance for distribution utilities to assess the amount of PV capacity possible to accommodate without troubling the operation of the grid. In this paper, a novel method to quantify the hosting capacity of low voltage grids is presented. The method starts considering a state of fully exploited building rooftop solar potential. A downward process is proposed—from the starting state with expected violations on the grid operation to a state with no violations. In this process, the installed PV capacity is progressively reduced. The reductions are made sequentially and selectively aiming to mitigate specific violations: nodes overvoltage, lines overcurr…

Interactive decision support and trade-off analysis for sustainable forest landscape planning under deep uncertainty

2022

Sustainable environmental management often involves long-term time horizons and multiple conflicting objectives and, by nature, is affected by different sources of uncertainty. Many sources of uncertainty, such as climate change or government policies, cannot be addressed using probabilistic models, and, therefore, they can be seen to contain deep uncertainty. In this setting, the variety of possible future states is represented as a set of scenarios lacking any information about the likelihood of occurring. Integrating deep uncertainty into multiobjective decision support increases complexity, calling for the elaboration of appropriate methods and tools. This paper proposes a novel intera…

Experimental characterization of variable-speed packaged rooftop units in presence of evaporator fouling

2022

Variable-speed packaged rooftop units have been increasingly adopted in the commercial sector. If not properly maintained, the fouling of heat exchangers and the improper refrigerant charge could increase energy consumption. In this work, the response of variable-speed rooftop units to evaporator fouling is investigated based on experiments on a variable-speed 17.5 kW rooftop unit. A novel testing procedure is proposed, aimed at covering a broad range of operating conditions by a reduced number of tests. Two opposite cases were investigated: (i) even in presence of fouling, the controller can restore the required cooling capacity, and (ii) the intensity of the fouling does not allow the con…

Highly cited educational technology journal articles: A descriptive and critical analysis

2022

Citations are valuable capital in the academy as the number of citations is the most frequently used indicator in evaluating the quality of papers, journals, researchers, and universities. Thus, the characteristics of highly cited articles (HCA) have become a common research topic but the approach has been mainly descriptive with no profound critical reflection of what kind of research is cited, where the research is from, where the research is published, and what do these things mean for edtech research. This paper contributes to this need by providing a descriptive and critical analysis of 200 highly cited articles from 10 edtech journals. To summarize the key findings, a ‘typical’ edtech…
