The Abundance of Tumor-Infiltrating CD8+ Tissue Resident Memory T Lymphocytes Correlates with Patient Survival in Glioblastoma

2022

Glial tumors alone account for 40% of all CNS tumors and present a low survival rate. The tumor microenvironment is a critical regulator of tumor progression and therapeutic effectiveness in glioma. Growing evidence from numerous studies of human solid tumor-infiltrating CD8(+) T cells indicates that tissue-resident memory T cells (TRM) represent a substantial subpopulation of tumor-infiltrating lymphocytes (TILs). Although it is reported that some types of cancer patients with high immune infiltration tend to have better outcomes than patients with low immune infiltration, it seems this does not happen in gliomas. This study aimed to characterize TRMs cells in the glioma tumor microenviron…

2022

Purpose. Massive irreparable posterosuperior rotator cuff tears in an active population, resulting in a pseudo-paralytic shoulder, pose a challenge for the orthopaedic surgeon. In an effort to avoid or delay arthroplasty surgery, other surgical strategies such as arthroscopically-assisted latissimus dorsi transfer (aLDT) or the implantation of a subacromial spacer (SAS) can be considered. The aim of the present study is to associate, for the first time, these two surgical procedures in order to demonstrate the surgical feasibility and the effectiveness of their synergistic biomechanical effect. Methods. The study group consisted of patients who underwent aLDT for a massive irreparable poste…

Effects of osteopathic manipulative treatment of the pivots on lower limb function in young professional football players

2022

Introduction: The most frequent injuries in professional soccer players are those pertinent to the lower limbs. In particular, strains of the hamstrings and ligamentous injuries of the knee. Therefore, preventive measures are aimed to reduce such events. We aimed to investigate if an osteopathic manipulative treatment (OMT) of the pivots could improve lower limb function in young professional football players. Methods: Thirty-eight young male professional football players were recruited (mean age 17.8 +/- 0.44 years). These were randomly assigned to an OMT or control group (n 1/4 20 and 18, respectively). Both groups underwent osteopathic evaluation. A sit-and-reach test, a vertical jump te…

Effect of spatial distribution of impurity ions on the signal of ‘C/O monitor for Wendelstein 7-X’ - an indicator of plasma wall interactions

2022

The ‘C/O monitor’ is a dedicated diagnostic system designed to monitor light impurities (B, C, N and O) in the Wendelstein 7-X (W7-X) stellarator. Its main goal is to provide fast (∼1 ms) information about the impurity level which is measured from a large plasma volume (high throughput). Its first subsystem dedicated to measure Lyman-α lines of H-like carbon (C5+ − 3.4 nm – used as PFC material) and oxygen (O7+ − 1.9 nm – common impurity absorbed by inner vessels’ walls) is going to be commissioned during the next Operational Phase of W7-X. Since the radiated photon intensity of a given impurity depends strongly on plasma kinetic parameters (Te, ne) and impurity transport, it is important t…

Is more competition better? Retail electricity prices and switching rates in the European Union.

2022

The European Union (EU) promotes the liberalization of retail electricity markets to achieve lower prices, diversified offers, greater customer participation, and sustainable consumption behaviours. While retail competition has been a reality in most EU member states, most studies find that retail competition is suitable for large customers, but the evidence on small customers is inconclusive. We analyze data on electricity prices and switching rates in 27 EU member states and the UK from 2000 to 2019. We find that retail competition is associated with lower prices and that the effect of full liberalization is greater than that of partial liberalization.

Lowered nutritional quality of prey decrease the growth and biomolecule content of rainbow trout fry

2022

Diet quality is crucial for the development of offspring. Here, we examined how the nutritional quality of prey affects somatic growth and the lipid, carbohydrate, protein, amino acid, and polyunsaturated fatty acid content of rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss) fry using a three-trophic-level experimental setup. Diets differed especially in their content of eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA), which are physiologically essential polyunsaturated fatty acids for a fish fry. Trout were fed with an artificial diet (fish feed, DHA-rich), marine zooplankton diet (krill/Mysis, DHA-rich), or freshwater zooplankton diet (Daphnia, Cladocera, DHA-deficient). The Daphnia were gr…

α-casein micelles-membranes interaction: Flower-like lipid protein coaggregates formation

2022

Background: Environmental conditions regulate the association/aggregation states of proteins and their action in cellular compartments. Analysing protein behaviour in presence of lipid membranes is fundamental for the comprehension of many functional and dysfunctional processes. Here, we present an experimental study on the interaction between model membranes and α-casein. α-casein is the major component of milk proteins and it is recognised to play a key role in performing biological functions. The conformational properties of this protein and its capability to form supramolecular structures, like micelles or irreversible aggregates, are key effectors in functional and pathological effects…

The Trasversale Sicula. Themes and action research projects in sensitive Mediterranean areas

2022

There are many sensitive territories located in disadvantaged areas of the Mediterranean where depopulation has been a significant consequence of their economic and demographic decline. This has led to the gradual flight of young people and the disappearance of certain essential services. The conservation of resources is a topic of growing interest in Europe. It is necessary to rethink a new vision concerning the territory of small towns. Within this framework, this action research project aims to define a new collective sensibility, full of resources and history, throughout the territory of the Trasversale Sicula. The narrative of a new imaginary of the Sicilian hinterland is the foundatio…

Variation in egg size and offspring phenotype among and within seven Arctic charr morphs.

2022

Maternal effects have the potential to alter early developmental processes of offspring and contribute to adaptive diversification. Egg size is a major contributor to offspring phenotype, which can influence developmental trajectories and potential resource use. However, to what extent intraspecific variation in egg size facilitates evolution of resource polymorphism is poorly understood. We studied multiple resource morphs of Icelandic Arctic charr, ranging from an anadromous morph—with a phenotype similar to the proposed ancestral phenotype—to sympatric morphs that vary in their degree of phenotypic divergence from the ancestral anadromous morph. We characterized variation in egg size and…

Pierre Bourdieu e le pratiche sociali

2022

Pierre Bourdieu (1930-2002) is considered one of the greatest sociologists of the contemporary era. A scholar of many interests, as can be seen from the number of his works, the breadth of the topics he dealt with, and the breadth of the theoretical-epistemological issues he debated with the sociological scientific community, he represents the example of a French intellectual who combines an intense research life with an equally intense presence in the public debate concerning controversial issues. Born into an underprivileged family (his father was a sharecropper later employed as a postal worker) in a small town in southern France, he trained at the École Normal Supérieure under Luis Alth…

Qualitative Longitudinal Research in Health Research: A Method Study

2022

Abstract Background Qualitative longitudinal research (QLR) comprises qualitative studies, with repeated data collection, that focus on the temporality (e.g., time and change) of a phenomenon. The use of QLR is increasing in health research since many topics within health involve change (e.g., progressive illness, rehabilitation). A method study can provide an insightful understanding of the use, trends and variations within this approach. The aim of this study was to map how QLR articles within the existing health research literature are designed to capture aspects of time and/or change. Methods This method study used an adapted scoping review design. Articles were eligible if they were wr…

The regulation of efferocytosis signaling pathways and adipose tissue homeostasis in physiological conditions and obesity: Current understanding and …

2022

Obesity is associated with changes in the resolution of acute inflammation that contribute to the clinical complications. The exact mechanisms underlying unresolved inflammation in obesity are not fully understood. Adipocyte death leads to pro-inflammatory adipose tissue macrophages, stimulating additional adipocyte apoptosis. Thus, a complex and tightly regulated process to inhibit inflammation and maintain homeostasis after adipocyte apoptosis is needed to maintain health. In normal condition, a specialized phagocytic process (efferocytosis) performs this function, clearing necrotic and apoptotic cells (ACs) and controlling inflammation. For efficient and continued efferocytosis, phagocyt…

Variable Friction Dampers (VFD) for a modulated mitigation of the seismic response of framed structures: Characteristics and design criteria

2022

In this paper a new approach for the energy dissipation is discussed based on the use of Variable Friction Dampers (VFDs). The VFD device is borrowed from braking systems mechanical engineering, able to modulate its capability of dissipation, providing a constant pure friction force coupled with an additional (variable) damping force with the increasing of the displacement. Resorting to a previous study, the characteristics and the efficiency of the “braking” system in terms of reduction of the displacements and the restoring forces is described for SDOF systems under seismic excitations and compared with the performances achievable by classic constant friction dampers (CFDs). Then, a desig…

A petrographic characterization has been used here, for the first time, in the study of lithic raw materials exploited in prehistoric Sicily. Our research interests one of the oldest archaeological sites with evidence of the early human peopling of the island (∼15kyr ago): San Teodoro Cave, in northeastern Sicily. Two geological Formations, Numidian and Monte Soro Flysch gave origin to well-rounded pebbly quartzite elements scattered in the marine terraces surrounding the cave and likely exploited as one of the sources of the raw materials for the production of lithic tools by the Epigravettian communities having settled the place. Study of the implementation of SPIF as a Reshaping strategy in terms of formability and accuracy performance

2022

The adaption of circular economy strategies has become increasingly necessary in current times. Researches need to be addressed on finding alternative processes or the modification of the existing processes in order to reprocess End-of-Life (EoL) components and consequently recover both materials and their functions. This research paper focuses on the use of single point incremental forming (SPIF) process for the Reshaping of sheet metal EoL components. Uniaxial and biaxial pre-straining was performed on AA5754 sheets to imitate an end-of-life component, and SPIF operations were carried out so as to obtain reshaped components. The most recent discoveries deriving from the exchanges between aesthetics and neuroscience – especially those stressing the importance of the sensory-motor system in both scientific and aesthetic experience – have raised a particular attention on the subjectivity of mental processes, especially those related to the knowledge processes, and on the role of imagination. These results have, still nowadays, influence and confirmation in literature, which many scholars interested in a cognitivistic approach consider as related, if not just the same, to the ability of mankind to make tools and, thus, to make sense. An example of this reciprocal influence of neuroscience and literature is without …
