Petrographic characterization of quartzite tools from the Palaeolithic site of San Teodoro cave (Sicily): Study on the provenance of lithic raw mater…

2022

A petrographic characterization has been used here, for the first time, in the study of lithic raw materials exploited in prehistoric Sicily. Our research interests one of the oldest archaeological sites with evidence of the early human peopling of the island (∼15kyr ago): San Teodoro Cave, in northeastern Sicily. Two geological Formations, Numidian and Monte Soro Flysch gave origin to well-rounded pebbly quartzite elements scattered in the marine terraces surrounding the cave and likely exploited as one of the sources of the raw materials for the production of lithic tools by the Epigravettian communities having settled the place. The preference for one of the two qualities of quartzite is…

Social information use by predators : expanding the information ecology of prey defences

2022

Social information use is well documented across the animal kingdom, but how it influences ecological and evolutionary processes is only just beginning to be investigated. Here we evaluate how social transmission may influence species interactions and potentially change or create novel selection pressures by focusing on predator-prey interactions, one of the best studied examples of species coevolution. There is extensive research into how prey can use social information to avoid predators, but little synthesis of how social transmission among predators can influence the outcome of different stages of predation. Here we review evidence that predators use social information during 1) encount…

Introducing the DYNAMICS framework of moment-to-moment development in achievement motivation

2022

This article introduces a new theoretical and psychometric framework describing moment-to-moment development and inter-dependencies of achievement motivation in terms of the situated expectancy-value theory, by introducing dynamical systems concepts into this line of research. As a first empirical example of a study using this framework, we examined whether task values, costs, and success expectancies measured in a learning situation (time point t) predicted themselves and each other at the next situation (t + 1; 27 min later) within a weekly university lecture. Situational task values, expectancies, and costs were assessed using the experience sampling method in 155 university teacher trai…

2022

This paper aims at an interdisciplinary, archaeological and archaeometric characterisation of the western Greek amphorae series produced in late Archaic and Classical-period Agrigento (southern Sicily). The research is based on a macroscopic examination, according to the standardised methods of Fabrics of the Central Mediterranean (FACEM), combined with petrographic analyses of 21 amphorae samples of presumed local fabric found in Agrigento itself. These were found in the artisanal area outside Porta V, in the excavations South of the temple of Zeus, and in several Sicilian consumption sites. Furthermore, a selection of 12 coarse ware samples and three tiles, all of supposed local manufactu…

Identifying territories using presence-only citizen science data : An application to the Finnish wolf population

2022

Citizens, community groups and local institutions participate in voluntary biological monitoring of population status and trends by providing species data e.g. for regulations and conservation. Sophisticated statistical methods are required to unlock the potential of such data in the assessment of wildlife populations. We develop a statistical modelling framework for identifying territories based on presence-only citizen science data. The framework can be used to jointly estimate the number of active animal territories and their locations in time. Our approach is based on a data generating model which consists of a dynamic submodel for the appearance/removal of territories and an observatio…

Sounding the Middle Ages : A Cinematic Chronotope

2022

Abstract This article explores the strategies used in movies to recreate the sound of the Middle Ages. The musical elements that our culture chooses for identifying the past and their reasons for those choices are an interesting point to start this investigation. Bakhtin's notion of “chronotope” is useful for discovering the musical signs of “medievalness”; indeed, the sources for authenticity are not the “historical” sources but the musical paradigm defined before the Second World War.

Conventional MRI-Derived Biomarkers of Adult-Type Diffuse Glioma Molecular Subtypes: A Comprehensive Review.

2022

The introduction of molecular criteria into the classification of diffuse gliomas has added interesting practical implications to glioma management. This has created a new clinical need for correlating imaging characteristics with glioma genotypes, also known as radiogenomics or imaging genomics. Although many studies have primarily focused on the use of advanced magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) techniques for radiogenomics purposes, conventional MRI sequences remain the reference point in the study and characterization of brain tumors. A summary of the conventional imaging features of glioma molecular subtypes should be useful as a tool for daily diagnostic brain tumor management. Hence, t…

Norm-inflation results for purely BBM-type Boussinesq systems

2022

This article is concerned with the norm-inflation phenomena associated with a periodic initial-value abcd-Benjamin-Bona-Mahony type Boussinesq system. We show that the initial-value problem is ill-posed in the periodic Sobolev spaces H−sp (0, 2π)×H−sp (0, 2π) for all s > 0. Our proof is constructive, in the sense that we provide smooth initial data that generates solutions arbitrarily large in H−sp (0, 2π) × H−sp (0, 2π)-norm for arbitrarily short time. This result is sharp since in [15] the well-posedness is proved to holding for all positive periodic Sobolev indexes of the form Hsp (0, 2π) × Hsp (0, 2π), including s = 0. peerReviewed

Small fish in big ponds : Connections of green finance assets to commodity and sectoral stock markets

2022

We analyze return and volatility connectedness of the rising green asset and the well-established US industry stock and commodity markets from September 2010 to July 2021. We find that the time-varying return and volatility connectedness have exhibited serious crisis jumps. Some individual assets of both the green and commodity markets are in connection to the US sectoral stock market returns, and the volatility connections are even more common than the return connections. Furthermore, some financial and economic uncertainty indicators manifest positive impacts from the volatility of some `big pond markets for e.g. commodities, whereas some others affect the connectedness negatively. Transient Electrical Behaviour of the TF Superconducting Coils of Divertor Tokamak Test Facility During a Fast Discharge

2022

The paper is focused on the electromagnetic analysis of the Toroidal Field (TF) superconducting coils of the Divertor Tokamak Test facility (DTT) when electrical transients occur in the TF coils system: for example, during the operations of the Fast Discharge Units (FDUs) and considering also, the simultaneous occurrence of a fault condition. During the FDU intervention, a transient voltage excitation lasting few microseconds occurs at the TF coil terminals and it electrically stresses the insulations of TF coils itsef. To investigate the voltage distribution across, inside and between different Double Pancakes (DPs) of each TF coil, a lumped parameters circuital model has been developed an…

Pierre Bourdieu e le pratiche sociali

2022

Pierre Bourdieu (1930-2002) is considered one of the greatest sociologists of the contemporary era. A scholar of many interests, as can be seen from the number of his works, the breadth of the topics he dealt with, and the breadth of the theoretical-epistemological issues he debated with the sociological scientific community, he represents the example of a French intellectual who combines an intense research life with an equally intense presence in the public debate concerning controversial issues. Born into an underprivileged family (his father was a sharecropper later employed as a postal worker) in a small town in southern France, he trained at the École Normal Supérieure under Luis Alth…

Partial-order reduction for parity games and parameterised Boolean equation systems

2022

AbstractIn model checking, reduction techniques can be helpful tools to fight the state-space explosion problem. Partial-order reduction (POR) is a well-known example, and many POR variants have been developed over the years. However, none of these can be used in the context of model checking stutter-sensitive temporal properties. We propose POR techniques for parity games, a well-established formalism for solving a variety of decision problems, including model checking. As a result, we obtain the first POR method that is sound for the full modal $$\upmu $$ μ -calculus. We show how our technique can be applied to the fixed point logic called parameterised Boolean equation systems, which pro…

Driver Distraction Detection Using Bidirectional Long Short-Term Network Based on Multiscale Entropy of EEG

2022

Driver distraction diverting drivers' attention to unrelated tasks and decreasing the ability to control vehicles, has aroused widespread concern about driving safety. Previous studies have found that driving performance decreases after distraction and have used vehicle behavioral features to detect distraction. But how brain activity changes while distraction remains unknown. Electroencephalography (EEG), a reliable indicator of brain activities has been widely employed in many fields. However, challenges still exist in mining the distraction information of EEG in realistic driving scenarios with uncertain information. In this paper, we propose a novel framework based on Multi-scale entrop…

The Trasversale Sicula. Themes and action research projects in sensitive Mediterranean areas

2022

There are many sensitive territories located in disadvantaged areas of the Mediterranean where depopulation has been a significant consequence of their economic and demographic decline. This has led to the gradual flight of young people and the disappearance of certain essential services. The conservation of resources is a topic of growing interest in Europe. It is necessary to rethink a new vision concerning the territory of small towns. Within this framework, this action research project aims to define a new collective sensibility, full of resources and history, throughout the territory of the Trasversale Sicula. The narrative of a new imaginary of the Sicilian hinterland is the foundatio…

Heterozygote advantage and pleiotropy contribute to intraspecific color trait variability

2022

The persistence of intrapopulation phenotypic variation typically requires some form of balancing selection because drift and directional selection eventually erode genetic variation. Heterozygote advantage remains a classic explanation for the maintenance of genetic variation in the face of selection. However, examples of heterozygote advantage, other than those associated with disease resistance, are rather uncommon. Across most of its distribution, males of the aposematic moth Arctia plantaginis have two hindwing phenotypes determined by a heritable one locus-two allele polymorphism (genotypes: WW/Wy = white morph, yy = yellow morph). Using genotyped moths, we show that the presence of o…

Real constituents of permutation characters

2022

Abstract We prove a broad generalization of a theorem of W. Burnside about the existence of real characters of finite groups to permutation characters. If G is a finite group, under the necessary hypothesis of O 2 ′ ( G ) = G , we can also give some control on the parity of multiplicities of the constituents of permutation characters (a result that needs the Classification of Finite Simple Groups). Along the way, we give a new characterization of the 2-closed finite groups using odd-order real elements of the group. All this can be seen as a contribution to Brauer's Problem 11 which asks how much information about subgroups of a finite group can be determined by the character table.

The effect of a temperature-sensitive prophage on the evolution of virulence in an opportunistic bacterial pathogen.

2022

https://doi.org/10.1111/mec.16638 Abstract Viruses are key actors of ecosystems and have major impacts on global biogeochemical cycles. Prophages deserve particular attention as they are ubiquitous in bacterial genomes and can enter a lytic cycle when triggered by environmental conditions. We explored how temperature affects the interactions between prophages and other biological levels by using an opportunistic pathogen, the bacterium Serratia marcescens, that harbours several prophages and that had undergone an evolution experiment under several temperature regimes. We found that the release of one of the prophages was temperature-sensitive and malleable to evolutionary changes. We furthe…

Lowered nutritional quality of prey decrease the growth and biomolecule content of rainbow trout fry

2022

Diet quality is crucial for the development of offspring. Here, we examined how the nutritional quality of prey affects somatic growth and the lipid, carbohydrate, protein, amino acid, and polyunsaturated fatty acid content of rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss) fry using a three-trophic-level experimental setup. Diets differed especially in their content of eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA), which are physiologically essential polyunsaturated fatty acids for a fish fry. Trout were fed with an artificial diet (fish feed, DHA-rich), marine zooplankton diet (krill/Mysis, DHA-rich), or freshwater zooplankton diet (Daphnia, Cladocera, DHA-deficient). The Daphnia were gr…
