Process-based microphysical characterization of a strong mid-latitude convective system using aircraft in situ cloud measurements
2022
Clouds in the mixed-phase temperature regime impose a large uncertainty onto climate prediction models, in part due to incomplete knowledge of the degree of glaciation affecting cloud radiative properties. To achieve a better representation of these clouds, it is crucial to improve the understanding of ice nucleation and growth as well as microphysical properties determining the cloud phase. In this case study, we provide a rare data set of aircraft in situ measurements in a strong mid-latitude convective system extending from the boundary layer to the tropopause and aim to extend the sparse database of such measurements. Data were obtained with the research aircraft HALO and cloud properti…
Historical Ecology, Archaeology and Biocultural Landscapes: Cross-Disciplinary Approaches to the Long Anthropocene
2022
From the local to the global scale, human impact is the real protagonist of the Anthro- pocene. It is impossible to understand ecosystems and the landscape without considering the long-term processes of anthropic activities. The driving forces in landscape change are strongly related to historical dynamics. Changes in political regimes, social structures, eco- nomic modes of production, cultural and religious influences—which all traditionally fall within the domain of the humanities—are phenomena entangled with many ecological and environmental factors. Thus, understanding landscapes in the Anthropocene is impossible without a cross-disciplinary approach.

Planning
2022
The chapter seeks to explore the role urban planning can play in the decision-making process within large urban areas. In the first part, the concept of planning is explored through different theoretical perspectives, while in a second section how urban agglomerations and metropolitan areas are viewed in the planning literature are analyzed. In the last sections the paper describes how urban and regional planning has evolved faced with the development issues of large urban areas and some ways to give planning an appropriate role in shaping metropolitan development are suggested.
Práctica docente y aprendizaje inicial de la lengua escrita
2022
Several studies on language didactics point out that the performance of pre-service teachers is highly influenced by beliefs that resist curricular orientations and research knowledge. This work aims to show the functioning of teaching practices for initial learning of reading and writing determined by the Spanish curriculum. To this effect, under a qualitative methodology that addresses the dialogic perspective of teaching, 71 reading and writing tasks were analyzed, which were representative of three different teaching practice profiles. The results show differences between tasks in terms of their typology, the interaction they generate, the materials and resources that come into play, an…
Wafer-scale pulsed laser deposition of ITO for solar cells: reduced damage vs. interfacial resistance
2022
Transparent conducting oxides (TCOs) used in solar cells must be optimized to achieve minimum parasitic absorption losses while providing sufficient lateral conductivity. Low contact resistance with the adjacent device layers and low damage to the substrate during deposition of the TCO are also important requirements to ensure high solar cell efficiencies. Pulsed laser deposition (PLD) has been proposed as an alternative low-damage TCO deposition technique on top of sensitive layers and interfaces in organic and perovskite solar cells but is yet to be studied for the more mature silicon technology. Focusing on the PLD deposition pressure as the key parameter to reduce damage, we developed t…
Anti-SARS-CoV-2 IgA and IgG in human milk after vaccination is dependent on vaccine type and previous SARS-CoV-2 exposure: a longitudinal study
2022
Breast milk is a vehicle to transfer protective antibodies from the lactating mother to the neonate. After SARS-CoV-2 infection, virus-specific IgA and IgG have been identified in breast milk, however, there are limited data on the impact of different COVID-19 vaccine types in lactating women. This study is aimed to evaluate the time course of induction of SARS-CoV-2-specific IgA and IgG in breast milk after vaccination.
Phase Transitions of BiVO4 under High Pressure and High Temperature
2022
We have studied the occurrence of phase transitions in two polymorphs of BiVO4 under high-pressure and high-temperature conditions by means of X-ray diffraction measurements. The fergusonite polymorph undergoes a phase transition at 1.5(1) GPa and room temperature into a tetragonal scheelite-type structure. The same transition takes place at 523(1) K and ambient pressure. A second phase transition takes place at room temperature under compression at 16(1) GPa. The transition is from the tetragonal scheelite structure to a monoclinic structure (space group P21/c). All observed phase transitions are reversible. The zircon polymorph counterpart also transforms under compression into the scheel…
Opportunistic co-screening for HCV and COVID-19-related services: A creative response with a need for thoughtful reflection.
2022
At a time when hepatitis C virus clearance can be obtained by DAAs in almost all infected patients, global infection burden control is an objective within reach, even if achieving the WHO HCV elimination targets by 2030 may not be attainable. 1 The lowest cost intervention is an awareness campaign to bring in those who are recently diagnosed and those who were previously diagnosed but not treated. Only 30% of all HCV‐diagnosed patients are linked‐to‐care. 2 The next level of intervention is case‐finding for disease control and screening. Screening invites people who do not have symptoms to undergo testing, whereas health professionals are focused on detecting conditions as early as possible…
Environmental Conflicts and Social Innovation on the Balearic Islands (Spain)
2022
New environmental conflicts arise all the time as a consequence of the industrial economy and economic growth. The search for new energy and new materials jeopardizes the margin to promote sustainable development in many local communities. In this paper, we examine a conflict related to hydrocarbons projects in the Balearic Sea (Spain) from the social innovation perspective. This novel approach allows us to focus on how socially innovative responses can be triggered by environmental threats. A set of mixed methods (qualitative analysis and social network analysis) are implemented to study the emergence and development of Alianza Mar Blava in Ibiza–Formentera. This is an initiative that succ…
Health Education Teachers’ Assessment Conceptions and Practices : Identifying Assessment Profiles
2022
The study explored the latent construct underlying the assessment conceptions and practices of Finnish Health Education teachers (n = 165) in the context of curricula, seeking thereby to identify the teachers’ assessment profiles. Six underlying factors were found to encompass their assessment conceptions and practices, namely Assessment supporting learning, Assessment of working, Self and peer assessment as part of grading, Common assessment criteria, Questionable assessment practices, and Norm-referenced assessment. Via cluster analysis, three distinct assessment profiles were identified, labeled as Problematic assessors, Learning supportive assessors, and Norm-based assessors. These find…
Physiactisome: A New Nanovesicle Drug Containing Heat Shock Protein 60 for Treating Muscle Wasting and Cachexia.
2022
Currently, no commercially available drugs have the ability to reverse cachexia or counteract muscle wasting and the loss of lean mass. Here, we report the methodology used to develop Physiactisome—a conditioned medium released by heat shock protein 60 (Hsp60)—overexpressing C2C12 cell lines enriched with small and large extracellular vesicles. We also present evidence supporting its use in the treatment of cachexia. Briefly, we obtain a nanovesicle-based secretion by genetically modifying C2C12 cell lines with an Hsp60-overexpressing plasmid. The secretion is used to treat naïve C2C12 cell lines. Physiactisome activates the expression of PGC-1α isoform 1, which is di…

Quantum enhancement of qutrit dynamics through driving field and photonic-band-gap crystal
2022
A comparative study of a qutrit (three-level atomic system) coupled to a classical field in a typical Markovian reservoir (free space) and in a photonic band-gap (PBG) crystal is carried out. The aim of the study is to assess the collective impact of structured environment and classical control of the system on the dynamics of quantum coherence, non-Markovianity, and estimation of parameters which are initially encoded in the atomic state. We show that the constructive interplay of PBG material as a medium and classical driving field as a part of system results in a significant enhancement of all the quantum traits of interest, compared to the case when the driven qutrit is in a Markovian e…
Use of an extended KDIGO definition to diagnose acute kidney injury in patients with COVID-19: A multinational study using the ISARIC–WHO clinical ch…
2022
Background Acute kidney injury (AKI) is one of the most common and significant problems in patients with Coronavirus Disease 2019 (COVID-19). However, little is known about the incidence and impact of AKI occurring in the community or early in the hospital admission. The traditional Kidney Disease Improving Global Outcomes (KDIGO) definition can fail to identify patients for whom hospitalisation coincides with recovery of AKI as manifested by a decrease in serum creatinine (sCr). We hypothesised that an extended KDIGO (eKDIGO) definition, adapted from the International Society of Nephrology (ISN) 0by25 studies, would identify more cases of AKI in patients with COVID-19 and that these may c…
A workplace Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) intervention for improving healthcare staff psychological distress: A randomised controlled trial
2022
The levels of psychological distress and burnout among healthcare staff are high, with negative implications for patient care. A growing body of evidence indicates that workplace programmes based on Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) are effective for improving employees’ general psychological health. However, there is a paucity of research examining the specific psychological and/or behavioural processes through which workplace ACT programmes transmit their beneficial effects. The aim of this randomised controlled trial was to investigate the outcomes and putative processes of change in a 4-session ACT training programme designed to reduce psychological distress among healthcare staff…

We have observed prominent phenomena in the resonant laser ionization process specific to the gaseous envir…
‘I don’t feel like I’m studying languages anymore’ : Exploring change in higher education students’ learner beliefs during multilingual language stud…
2022
To educate multilingual global citizens and follow the multilingual turn in language education, universities are faced with the challenge of developing their language pedagogies. This article reports on a study conducted in the context of university language studies that take a multilingual perspective to learning languages for academic and professional purposes. Although multilingual pedagogies have been widely developed in what could be traditionally considered as bilingual education, practical implementations are rarer when considering students that generally have one home language but study multiple foreign languages. To assess the effects of multilingual teaching in this kind of contex…

Postmortem Electrical Conductivity Changes of Dicentrarchus labrax Skeletal Muscle: Root Mean Square (RMS) Parameter in Estimating Time since Death
2022
Electric impedance spectroscopy techniques have been widely employed to study basic biological processes, and recently explored to estimate postmortem interval (PMI). However, the most-relevant parameter to approximate PMI has not been recognized so far. This study investigated electrical conductivity changes in muscle of 18 sea bass specimens, maintained at different room temperatures (15.0 °C; 20.0 °C; 25.0 °C), during a 24 h postmortem period using an oscilloscope coupled with a signal generator, as innovative technology. The root mean square (RMS) was selected among all measured parameters, and recorded every 15 min for 24 h after death. The RMS(t) time series for each anima…
Bone regeneration at extraction sockets filled with leukocyte-platelet-rich fibrin: An experimental pre-clinical study
2022
We aimed to histomorphometrically evaluate the effects of Leucocyte-Platelet-Rich Fibrin (L-PRF), with and without the combination of a bone grafting material, for alveolar ridge preservation using an in vivo canine model. Seven dogs (Female Beagles, ~18-month-old) were acquired for the study. L-PRF was prepared from each individual animal by drawing venous blood and spinning them through a centrifuge at 408 RCF-clot (IntrasSpin, Intra-Lock, Boca Raton, FL). L-PRF membranes were obtained from XPression fabrication kit (Biohorizons Implant Systems, Inc., AL, USA). A split mouth approach was adopted with the first molar mesial and distal socket defects treated in an interpolated fashion of th…

2022
The production of polyhydroxyalkanoates (PHA) using industrial wastewaters as feedstocks is a current and challenging topic. This study investigated the production of biopolymers by a mixed microbial culture under different OLRs equal to 1 kgCOD m-3d-1 (Period 1), 2 kgCOD m-3d-1 (Period 2) and 3 kgCOD m-3d-1 (Period 3). The maximum PHA content was achieved in Period 2 (0.38 gPHA gTSS-1), whereas lower values were obtained in Period 1 (0.13 gPHA gTSS-1) and Period 3 (0.26 gPHA gTSS-1). Overall, the maximum PHA productivity resulted equal to 0.08 gPHA L-1h-1 (P2), 0.05 gPHA L-1h-1 (P1) and 0.04 gPHA L-1h-1 (P3), respectively. The molecular weight of the PHA increased from Period 1 (250 kDa) t…
Stress in Medical Students: PRIMES, an Italian, Multicenter Cross-Sectional Study
2022
Medical students (MSs) are healthcare workers and must also cope with education-related stressors. This study aims to assess factors associated with perceived stress in Italian MSs. A cross-sectional study was conducted in 12 Italian medical schools (MSCs) in November 2018. A questionnaire assessed socio-demographic characteristics, habits, opinions about MSC, and concerns about the future. Stress was assessed with the PSS-10. Descriptive and univariable tests were performed. A linear model was fitted to find associations of the PSS-10 score with characteristics. There were 2513 collected questionnaires. Median PSS-10 score was 18 (IQR 11). Median age was 22 (IQR 4) and 61% of the sample wa…
The Whole Is Greater than the Sum of the Parts: A Multilayer Approach on Criminal Networks
2022
Traditional social network analysis can be generalized to model some networked systems by multilayer structures where the individual nodes develop relationships in multiple layers. A multilayer network is called multiplex if each layer shares at least one node with some other layer. In this paper, we built a unique criminal multiplex network from the pre-trial detention order by the Preliminary Investigation Judge of the Court of Messina (Sicily) issued at the end of the Montagna anti-mafia operation in 2007. Montagna focused on two families who infiltrated several economic activities through a cartel of entrepreneurs close to the Sicilian Mafia. Our network possesses three layers which sha…
Nonexistence of solutions to higher order evolution inequalities with nonlocal source term on Riemannian manifolds
2022
We establish sufficient conditions for the nonexistence of nontrivial solutions to higher order evolution inequalities, with respect to the time variable. We consider a nonlocal source term, and work on complete noncompact Riemannian manifolds. The obtained conditions depend on the parameters of the problem and the geometry of the manifold. Our main result recovers some nonexistence theorems from the literature, established in the whole Euclidean space.
Preliminary Investigation of Biogenic Amines in Type I Sourdoughs Produced at Home and Bakery Level
2022
During a survey for isolating sourdough lactic acid bacteria (LAB), 20 dough samples produced at the bakery level (BL) or home-made (HM) were collected. An enzyme-based colorimetric method revealed a total biogenic amines (BAs) concentration in the range 41.4–251.8 ppm for six (three BL and three HM) sourdoughs characterised by unpleasant odours. Eight BAs generally investigated in foods were identified and quantified from these six samples by ultra-high performance liquid chromatography tandem mass spectrometry (UHPLC–MS/MS). Only one HM sample contained almost all analysed BAs. Tryptamine was exclusively detected in HM sourdoughs (0.71–24.1 ppm). Putrescine, tryptamine, …
Skills Matching for a Greener Industry 4.0 : A Literature Review
2022
Manufacturing industry has historically had a very high leverage on environmental impact. Therefore, it is urgent to identify how the industry and its employees can contribute to change towards a sustainable society. Industry leaders need to enable their employees to create sustainable solutions, using technologies rising in industry 4.0. However, nowadays there are also critical discussions about whether this trend has reached our workplace settings in a satisfactory way. Namely, there is a growing skill gap among employees in manufacturing industries causing a lack of capability to match skill needs for fast technological development and requirements on sustainability. The resulting misma…
Reading, Writing, Technology, and Embodiment
2022
The insights emerging from embodied (or 4E) cognition (Newen, et al., 2018) hold considerable promise for education, but thus far have had little impact. The widespread implementation of digital technologies in classrooms presents a timely occasion to remedy this situation. The increasing abstraction entailed in the transition from pen and paper to keyboards, and from reading in print books to reading on screens, warrants supplementing extant perspectives on learning and technologies as they are currently represented in curricula and educational policy documents. This chapter helps educators to rethink and redefine the role and meaning of technology in education broadly speaking, and descri…
Effects of precipitation seasonality, vegetation cycle, and irrigation on enhanced weathering
2022
Enhanced Weathering (EW) is a promising strategy for carbon sequestration, but several open questions remain regarding the actual rates of dissolution in conditions of natural hydroclimatic variability in comparison to laboratory experiments. In this context, models play a pivotal role, as they allow exploring and predicting EW dynamics under different environmental conditions. Here a comprehensive hydro-biogeochemical model has been applied to four cropland case studies (i.e., Sicily and the Padan plain in Italy and California and Iowa in the USA) characterized by different rainfall seasonality, vegetation (i.e., wheat for Sicily and California and corn for Padan plain and Iowa), and soil …
Highly-fluorescent BODIPY-functionalised metallacages as drug delivery systems
2022
With the aim of designing new metallosupramolecular architectures for drug delivery, research has focused on porous 3-dimensional (3D)-metallacages able to encapsulate cytotoxic agents protecting them from metabolism while targeting them to cancer sites. Here, two self-assembled [Pd2L4]4+ cages (CG1 and CG2) featuring 3,5-bis(3-ethynylpyridine)phenyl ligands (L) exo-functionalised with dipyrromethene (BODIPY) groups have been synthesised and characterised by different methods, including NMR spectroscopy and mass spectrometry. 1H NMR spectroscopy studies shows that the cages are able to encapsulate the anticancer drug cisplatin in their hydrophobic cavity, as evidenced by electrostatic poten…
