The equal collective gains value in cooperative games

2021

AbstractThe property of equal collective gains means that each player should obtain the same benefit from the cooperation of the other players in the game. We show that this property jointly with efficiency characterize a new solution, called the equal collective gains value (ECG-value). We introduce a new class of games, the average productivity games, for which the ECG-value is an imputation. For a better understanding of the new value, we also provide four alternative characterizations of it, and a negotiation model that supports it in subgame perfect equilibrium.

Jet-associated deuteron production in pp collisions at √s = 13 TeV

2021

Deuteron production in high-energy collisions is sensitive to the space–time evolution of the collision system, and is typically described by a coalescence mechanism. For the first time, we present results on jet-associated deuteron production in pp collisions at √s=13 TeV, providing an opportunity to test the established picture for deuteron production in events with a hard scattering. Using a trigger particle with high transverse-momentum (pT>5 GeV/c) as a proxy for the presence of a jet at midrapidity, we observe a measurable population of deuterons being produced around the jet proxy. The associated deuteron yield measured in a narrow angular range around the trigger particle differs by…

Do mental health and vitality mediate the relationship between perceived control over time and fear of COVID-19? A survey in an Italian sample

2021

Several studies evidenced increased elevated symptomatology levels in anxiety, general stress, depression, and post-traumatic stress related to COVID-19. Real difficulties in the effective control of time that could be responsible for mental health issues and loss of vitality were also reported. Prior literature highlighted how perceived control over time significantly modulates anxiety disorders and promotes psychological well-being. To verify the hypothesis that perceived control over time predicts fear of COVID-19 and mental health and vitality mediate this relationship, we performed an online survey on a sample of 301 subjects (female = 68%; Mage = 22.12, SD = 6.29; age range = 18–57 ye…

Right/Left Ventricular Blood Pool T2 Ratio as an Innovative Cardiac MRI Screening Tool for the Identification of Left‐to‐Right Shunts in Patients Wit…

2021

Background Left-to-right (L-R) shunts are characterized by a pathological connection between high- and low-pressure systems, leading to a mixing of oxygen-rich blood with low oxygenated blood. They are typically diagnosed by phase-contrast cardiac magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) which requires extensive planning. T2 is sensitive to blood oxygenation and may be able to detect oxygenation differences between the left (LV) and right ventricles (RV) caused by L-R shunts. Purpose To test the feasibility of routine T2 mapping to detect L-R shunts. Study type Retrospective. Population Patients with known L-R shunts (N = 27), patients with RV disease without L-R shunts (N = 21), and healthy volunt…

Binding Sites, Vibrations and Spin-Lattice Relaxation Times in Europium(II)-Based Metallofullerene Spin Qubits.

2021

Abstract To design molecular spin qubits with enhanced quantum coherence, a control of the coupling between the local vibrations and the spin states is crucial, which could be realized in principle by engineering molecular structures via coordination chemistry. To this end, understanding the underlying structural factors that govern the spin relaxation is a central topic. Here, we report the investigation of the spin dynamics in a series of chemically designed europium(II)‐based endohedral metallofullerenes (EMFs). By introducing a unique structural difference, i. e. metal‐cage binding site, while keeping other molecular parameters constant between different complexes, these manifest the ke…

Acute inferior myocardial infarction due to a large thrombus in the Left coronary sinus of valsalva.

2021

Background Masses in the ascending aorta are an uncommon source of coronary embolism: thrombi located on atherosclerotic aortic plaques are the most frequent cause. A floating thrombus, without evidence of ascending aortic pathology has rarely been reported Method We report a case of an unusual aortic route thromboembolism leading ST segment elevation Myocardial Infarction (STEMI). The patient was referred to the Hub Hospital to undergo urgent coronarography. The examination excluded atherosclerotic coronary arteries disease but an unusual persistence of contrast dye was found at the level of non-coronary sinus. The trans-esophageal echocardiography showed a mobile pedunculated echogenic ma…

Hybrid equilibrium element with high-order stress fields for accurate elastic dynamic analysis

2021

In the present article the two-dimensional hybrid equilibrium element formulation is initially developed, with quadratic, cubic, and quartic stress fields, for static analysis of compressible and quasi-incompressible elastic solids in the variational framework of the minimum complementary energy principle. Thereafter, the high-order hybrid equilibrium formulation is developed for dynamic analysis of elastic solids in the variational framework of the Toupin principle, which is the complementary form of the Hamilton principle. The Newmark time integration scheme is introduced for discretization of the stress fields in the time domain and dynamic analysis of both the compressible solid and qua…

The quantum paraelectric phase of SrTiO$_3$ from first principles

2021

We demonstrate how the quantum paraelectric ground state of SrTiO$_3$ can be accessed via a microscopic $ab~initio$ approach based on density functional theory. At low temperature the quantum fluctuations are strong enough to stabilize the paraelectric phase even though a classical description would predict a ferroelectric phase. We find that accounting for quantum fluctuations of the lattice and for the strong coupling between the ferroelectric soft mode and lattice elongation is necessary to achieve quantitative agreement with experimental frequency of the ferroelectric soft mode. The temperature dependent properties in SrTiO$_3$ are also well captured by the present microscopic framework.

Pyrrolidine in Drug Discovery: A Versatile Scaffold for Novel Biologically Active Compounds

2021

AbstractThe five-membered pyrrolidine ring is one of the nitrogen heterocycles used widely by medicinal chemists to obtain compounds for the treatment of human diseases. The great interest in this saturated scaffold is enhanced by (1) the possibility to efficiently explore the pharmacophore space due to sp3-hybridization, (2) the contribution to the stereochemistry of the molecule, (3) and the increased three-dimensional (3D) coverage due to the non-planarity of the ring—a phenomenon called “pseudorotation”. In this review, we report bioactive molecules with target selectivity characterized by the pyrrolidine ring and its derivatives, including pyrrolizines, pyrrolidine-2-one, pyrrolidine-2…

Healthy Lifestyle and Complementary and Alternative Medicine.

2021

Having a healthy lifestyle is one of the main personal goals, and multiple behaviors can be used to achieve this goal. However, people do not always develop appropriate health behaviors. One of the consumption alternatives is the use of complementary and alternative medicine (CAM), which has been increasing significantly in recent years, although not always adequately. This study aimed to determine whether CAM use is associated with a healthy lifestyle in Spanish adults. To achieve these objectives, 2486 adults were interviewed as part of the 2018 Barometer of the Centro de Investigaciones Sociologicas about their lifestyle and CAM use. The findings show a relationship between healthy lifes…

No room for males in caves: Female-biased sex ratio in subterranean amphipods of the genus Niphargus.

2021

Sex allocation theory predicts that the proportion of daughters to sons will evolve in response to ecological conditions that determine the costs and benefits of producing each sex. All else being equal, the adult sex ratio (ASR) should also vary with ecological conditions. Many studies of subterranean species reported female-biased ASR, but no systematic study has yet been conducted. We test the hypothesis that the ASR becomes more female-biased with increased isolation from the surface. We compiled a data set of ASRs of 35 species in the subterranean amphipod Niphargus, each living in one of three distinct habitats (surface-subterranean boundary, cave streams, phreatic lakes) representing…

Molecular chaperones and mirnas in epilepsy: Pathogenic implications and therapeutic prospects

2021

Epilepsy is a pathologic condition with high prevalence and devastating consequences for the patient and its entourage. Means for accurate diagnosis of type, patient monitoring for predicting seizures and follow up, and efficacious treatment are desperately needed. To improve this adverse outcome, miRNAs and the chaperone system (CS) are promising targets to understand pathogenic mechanisms and for developing theranostics applications. miRNAs implicated in conditions known or suspected to favor seizures such as neuroinflammation, to promote epileptic tolerance and neuronal survival, to regulate seizures, and others showing variations in expression levels related to seizures are promising ca…

Abstract. The dynamics of growing collisional orogens are mainly controlled by buoyancy and shear forces. However, the relative importance of these forces, their temporal evolution and their impact on the tectonic style of orogenic wedges remain elusive. Here, we quantify buoyancy and shear forces during collisional orogeny and investigate their impact on orogenic wedge formation and exhumation of crustal rocks. We leverage two-dimensional petrological–thermomechanical numerical simulations of a long-term (ca. 170 Myr) lithosphere deformation cycle involving subsequent hyperextension, cooling, convergence, subduction and collision. Hyperextension generates a basin with exhumed continental m…

EMI Filter Re-Design in a SMPS with Inductor in Saturation

2021

This paper analyzes the design issues of the input EMI (Electro-Magnetic Interference) filter's in a switching mode power supply where the power inductor is operated in saturation. Starting with a SMPS equipped with linear inductor, the input filter is firstly designed to comply with Standards. Then, a new inductor with a smaller core size is employed in the same SMPS to exploit saturation. The EMI filter is re-designed, taking into account the increase of EMI introduced by the non-linear operation of the inductor. Finally, the reduction of the inductor's size and cost is compared with the increased size and cost of the EMI filter.

Closer Investigation of the Kinetics and Mechanism of Spirovinylcyclopropyl Oxindole Reaction with 3Σ–g-O2 by Topological Approaches and Unraveling t…

2021

In this investigation at the MN15L/Def2-TZVP level of theory, we present computational evidence indicating that the reaction of 3Σ-g-O2 with spirovinylcyclopropyl oxindole (2) leads to a product called spiro-1,2-dioxolane (2) in its singlet state; this reaction occurs via a stepwise mechanism and its rate-determining step is catalyzed by iodine radicals, which promotes opening of the three-membered ring under dark conditions. The conversion of 2 to 1-benzylindoline-2,3-dione (3) and 2-vinyloxirane (4) takes place via a concerted and slightly asynchronous reaction. Both electron localization function and AIM topological analysis reveal that the step associated with the attack of the 3Σ-g-O2 …

Two birds with one stone: dual grain-boundary and interface passivation enables >22% efficient inverted methylammonium-free perovskite solar cells

2021

Advancing inverted (pin) perovskite solar cells (PSCs) is key to further enhance the power conversion efficiency (PCE) and stability of flexible and perovskite-based tandem photovoltaics. Yet, the presence of defects at grain boundaries and in particular interfacial recombination at the perovskite/electron transporting layer interface induce severe non-radiative recombination losses, limiting the open-circuit voltage (VOC) and fill factor (FF) of PSCs in this architecture. In this work, we introduce a dual passivation strategy using the long chain alkylammonium salt phenethylammonium chloride (PEACl) both as an additive and for surface treatment to simultaneously passivate the grain b…

PBAT Based Composites Reinforced with Microcrystalline Cellulose Obtained from Softwood Almond Shells

2021

This study explores the processability, mechanical, and thermal properties of biocompostable composites based on poly (butylene adipate-co-terephthalate) (PBAT) as polymer matrix and microcrystalline cellulose (MCC) derived from softwood almond (Prunus dulcis) shells (as-MCC) as filler at two different weight concentration, i.e., 10 wt% and 20 wt%. The materials were processed by melt mixing and a commercial MCC (c-MCC) was used as filler comparison. The fibrillar shape of as-MCC particles was found to change the rheological behavior of PBAT, particularly at the highest concentration. The melt mixing processing allowed obtaining a uniform dispersion of both kinds of fillers, slightly reduci…

Ab Initio Computation of the Longitudinal Response Function in Ca40

2021

We present a consistent ab initio computation of the longitudinal response function ${R}_{L}$ in $^{40}\mathrm{Ca}$ using the coupled-cluster and Lorentz integral transform methods starting from chiral nucleon-nucleon and three-nucleon interactions. We validate our approach by comparing our results for ${R}_{L}$ in $^{4}\mathrm{He}$ and the Coulomb sum rule in $^{40}\mathrm{Ca}$ against experimental data and other calculations. For ${R}_{L}$ in $^{40}\mathrm{Ca}$ we obtain a very good agreement with experiment in the quasielastic peak up to intermediate momentum transfers, and we find that final state interactions are essential for an accurate description of the data. Coherent J/ψ and ψ′ photoproduction at midrapidity in ultra-peripheral Pb–Pb collisions at √sNN = 5.02 TeV

2021

The coherent photoproduction of J / ψ and ψ ′ mesons was measured in ultra-peripheral Pb–Pb collisions at a center-of-mass energy sNN=5.02 TeV with the ALICE detector. Charmonia are detected in the central rapidity region for events where the hadronic interactions are strongly suppressed. The J / ψ is reconstructed using the dilepton (l+l-) and proton–antiproton decay channels, while for the ψ ′ the dilepton and the l+l-π+π- decay channels are studied. The analysis is based on an event sample corresponding to an integrated luminosity of about 233 μb - 1. The results are compared with theoretical models for coherent J / ψ and ψ ′ photoproduction. The coherent cross section is found to be in …
