Out-of-plane transport of 1T-TaS2/graphene-based van der Waals heterostructures

2021

Due to their anisotropy, layered materials are excellent candidates for studying the interplay between the in-plane and out-of-plane entanglement in strongly correlated systems. A relevant example is provided by 1T-TaS2, which exhibits a multifaceted electronic and magnetic scenario due to the existence of several charge density wave (CDW) configurations. It includes quantum hidden phases, superconductivity and exotic quantum spin liquid (QSL) states, which are highly dependent on the out-of-plane stacking of the CDW. In this system, the interlayer stacking of the CDW is crucial for the interpretation of the underlying electronic and magnetic phase diagram. Here, thin-layers of 1T-TaS2 are …

Waste not, want not: Report of a completely calcified C1-C2 juxtafacet cyst and literature review

2021

Background: Calcified juxtafacet cysts in the cervical spine are extremely rate. Such symptomatic cysts commonly cause neck pain, radiculopathy, or even myelopathy. MR and CT studies typically document cord/ root compression. On occasion, some of these cysts will spontaneously regress, while many others may warrant surgical removal. Case Description: A 70-year-old male presented with a 2-year history of a progressive tetraparesis. The preoperative MR/CT studies showed a C1-C2 left extradural mass occupying more than half of the spinal canal. On MR, it was homogeneously hypointense on both T1- and T2-weighted images, while the CT showed a calcified cyst. Intraoperative and histopathological…

DESIGN BY MATERIAL: FROM MATERIAL TO FORM THROUGH CAD MODELLING

2021

AbstractFor Aristotelian scholars, matter is identified as the subject of change, while form is the boundary of matter. Design is a process of bringing about change. From a design perspective, material is what an entity is made from; form is what makes a thing what it is. Based on the principle, “form is the boundary of matter”, this paper proposes a Design by Material method, thereby addressing the knowledge gap of a systematic method for designing according to material. This method is predicated on the material specification as the first input in the design process. A formal model is built in which the material acts as a trigger and driver for the design process. The method is implemented…

The microbiota impacts mesenteric ischemia-reperfusion injury, aggravating the interaction of leukocytes with endothelial cells in mesenteric venules. The role of defined gut microbiomes in this life-threatening pathology is unknown. To investigate how a defined model microbiome affects the adhesion of leukocytes in mesenteric ischemia-reperfusion, we took advantage of gnotobiotic isolator technology and transferred altered Schaedler flora (ASF) from C3H/HeNTac to germ-free C57BL/6J mice. We were able to detect all eight bacterial taxa of ASF in fecal samples of colonized C57BL/6J mice by PCR. Applying qRT-PCR for quantification of species-specific 16S rDNA sequences of ASF bacteria, we fou…

Specialized subsets of innate-like T cells and dendritic cells protect from lethal pneumococcal infection in the lung

2021

SummaryInnate-like T cells, including invariant natural killer T (iNKT) cells, mucosal-associated invariant T (MAIT) cells and γδ T cells, are present in various barrier tissues, including the lung. They carry out protective responses during infections, but the mechanisms for protection are not completely understood. Here, we investigated their roles during pulmonary infection with Streptococcus pneumoniae. Following infection, innate-like T cells rapidly increased in lung tissue, in part through recruitment, but TCR activation and cytokine production occurred mostly in IL-17-producing NKT17 and γδ T cells. NKT17 cells were preferentially located outside the vasculature prior to infection, …

Role of AMPA receptor desensitization in short term depression : lessons from retinogeniculate synapses

2021

Repetitive synapse activity induces various forms of short-term plasticity. The role of presynaptic mechanisms such as residual Ca2+ and vesicle depletion in short-term facilitation and short-term depression is well established. On the other hand, the contribution of postsynaptic mechanisms such as receptor desensitization and saturation to short-term plasticity is less well known and often ignored. In this review, I will describe short-term plasticity in retinogeniculate synapses of relay neurons of the dorsal lateral geniculate nucleus (dLGN) to exemplify the synaptic properties that facilitate the contribution of AMPA receptor desensitization to short-term plasticity. These include high …

Il Dioniso delle "Baccanti" e i "piegatori di pini". Polivalenza di un'immagine leggendaria

2021

This paper investigates the mythical and ritual background of Dionysus’ representation as “fir-bender” in Euripides’ "Bacchae" (ll. 1061 ff.), in an attempt to shed light not only on the dramaturgical aspects of the tragic plot, but also on the cultural categories that make this representation intelligible to the Athenian audience at the end of the fifth century BC. Following Louis Gernet’s historical-anthropological approach based on the notion of "polyvalence des images", this paper aims to define a mythical pattern – the connection between the bending of a tree and the dismemberment of a human victim – already attested in the Attic legend of Theseus and Sinis, in which both characters se…

Confocal and Two-Photon Spectroscopy

2021

The spectroscopic analysis of bulk samples provides useful information at the mesoscopic scale that can be fostered when coupled with microscopy, which allows to integrate the spatial information in the analysis, this being of utmost importance for non‐homogeneous samples. Technologies such as confocal and two‐photon microscopy quickly became mainstream methods as they provide the possibility of noninvasive real‐time analysis of specimens of different nature, eliciting specific features even in samples with non‐ergodic behaviour. The spatial resolution of optical microscopy has its roots in the diffraction of light on the objective lens of the imaging system. Fluorescence microscopy is an o…

Topological protection of highly entangled non-Gaussian two-photon states

2021

Abstract We study theoretically the evolution of entangled non-Gaussian two-photon states in disordered topological lattices. Specifically, we consider spatially entangled two-photon states, modulated by Laguerre polynomials up to the 3rd order, which feature ring-shaped spatial and spectral correlation patterns. Such states are discrete analogs of photon-subtracted squeezed states, which are ubiquitous in optical quantum information processing or sensing applications. We find that, in general, a higher degree of entanglement coincides with a loss of topological protection against disorder, this is in line with previous results for Gaussian two-photon states. However, we identify a particul…

Hydroponic Lettuce Cultivation Using Organic Nutrient Solution from Aerobic Digested Aquacultural Sludge

2021

The aim of this study was to demonstrate how aquacultural sludge can be processed and utilized as an organic nutrient solution (ONS) for hydroponic lettuce production. By using a previous developed method, approximately 80% of the processed sludge was reclaimed as a clear, nutrient-rich solution. The performance of the recovered nutrient solution on lettuce growth was assessed in a nutrient film hydroponic system. The results were compared to the results obtained using a conventional nutrient solution (CNS). Yield, fresh weight, water consumption, and nutrient and heavy metal content in leaf tissue were measured. In spite of a 16% lower average fresh weight obtained in ONS compared to the w…

Gender Differences In Stem Courses: Analysis Of Italian Students' Performance

2021

Gender gap in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) courses is a prevalent topic in the recent literature, and quantitative studies on this relationship are essential to understand better the discussion and issues claimed by the arguments and the theories on this topic. In Italy, since 1989, the overall share of females enrolling at university is larger than the males' one, but females are still underrepresented in almost all the STEM fields, while overrepresented in nursing, humanities, and law schools. Our paper aims to investigate the gender differences in terms of university performance in STEM courses in Italy. This is done via segmented regression models, representin…

A high-resolution PET demonstrator using a silicon "magnifying glass".

2021

Abstract To assist ongoing investigations of the limits of the tradeoff between spatial resolution and noise in PET imaging, several PET instruments based on silicon-pad detectors have been developed. The latest is a segment of a dual-ring device to demonstrate that excellent reconstructed image resolution can be achieved with a scanner that uses highresolution detectors placed close to the object of interest or surrounding a small field-of-view in combination with detectors having modest resolution at larger radius. The outer ring of our demonstrator comprises conventional BGO block detectors scavenged from a clinical PET scanner and located at a 500 mm radius around a 50 mm diameter field…

A product space reformulation with reduced dimension for splitting algorithms

2021

AbstractIn this paper we propose a product space reformulation to transform monotone inclusions described by finitely many operators on a Hilbert space into equivalent two-operator problems. Our approach relies on Pierra’s classical reformulation with a different decomposition, which results in a reduction of the dimension of the outcoming product Hilbert space. We discuss the case of not necessarily convex feasibility and best approximation problems. By applying existing splitting methods to the proposed reformulation we obtain new parallel variants of them with a reduction in the number of variables. The convergence of the new algorithms is straightforwardly derived with no further assump…

X‐Ray Photoelectron Spectroscopy

2021

X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) is a spectroscopic technique in the family of electron spectroscopies, that is, those methods whose probe consists of electrons instead of photons. In the case of XPS, a soft, usually monochromatic X-ray causes the emission of electrons by means of the photoelectric effect. Differences in chemical potential and/or polarizability of the molecules can cause an alteration of the binding energy; in addition to photoelectrons, an ordinary XPS spectrum may also contain Auger electrons. In an XPS system, an electron gun is used to deliver a low-energy electron flux with a low current over the illuminated spot. In an XPS instrument, an ion gun may be used with…

Analysis of EMI Shielding Effectiveness for plastic fiber composites in the 5G sub-6 GHz band

2021

The study and modeling of EMC are becoming more critical than ever due to the ubiquitous presence of electronic circuits in all aspects of our lives. Specifically, it is crucial to extend these studies to the new frequencies that, in a few years, will be a reality in modern telecommunications systems, such as 5G and its derived technologies. A specific critical field where the proper EMI shielding has been ensured to avoid EMC problems is the electric autonomous vehicles (EAVs). The huge number of electronics systems in new vehicles will dramatically extend the demands on the EMI shielding solutions used to attenuate the radiated emissions that could affect circuits in the vehicle. Atomic Force Microscopy and Spectroscopy

2021

Atomic force microscopy (AFM) is probably the most celebrated technique falling into the family of experimental methods known as scanning probe microscopy. AFM is primarily designed to obtain the morphology of the surface of a solid material by using the force of interaction between an inert probe and the sample. The AFM microscope can generally be operated in many ways for morphology investigations, but they can be roughly classified into two main groups: static- and dynamic-deflection modes. Since atomic force microscopy makes use of tip-surface interaction to reconstruct the surface morphology of materials, it is of fundamental importance to fully understand the nature and properties of …

Sequential deconfinement in 3d N=2 gauge theories

2021

We consider 3d N = 2 gauge theories with fundamental matter plus a single field in a rank-2 representation. Using iteratively a process of "deconfinement" of the rank-2 field, we produce a sequence of Seiberg-dual quiver theories. We detail this process in two examples with zero superpotential: Usp(2N) gauge theory with an antisymmetric field and U(N) gauge theory with an adjoint field. The fully deconfined dual quiver has N nodes, and can be interpreted as an Aharony dual of theories with rank-2 matter. All chiral ring generators of the original theory are mapped into gauge singlet fields of the fully deconfined quiver dual.

A Trusted Hybrid Learning Approach to Secure Edge Computing

2021

Securing edge computing has drawn much attention due to the vital role of edge computing in Fifth Generation (5G) wireless networks. Artificial Intelligence (AI) has been adopted to protect networks against attackers targeting the connected edge devices or the wireless channel. However, the proposed detection mechanisms could generate a high false detection rate, especially against unknown attacks defined as zero-day threats. Thereby, we propose and conceive a new hybrid learning security framework that combines the expertise of security experts and the strength of machine learning to protect the edge computing network from known and unknown attacks, while minimizing the false detection rat…
