Hydrothermal alteration can result in pore pressurization and volcano instability

2021

AbstractThe collapse of a volcanic flank can be destructive and deadly. Hydrothermal alteration is common to volcanoes worldwide and is thought to promote volcano instability by decreasing rock strength. However, some laboratory studies have shown that not all alteration reduces rock strength. Our new laboratory data for altered rhyodacites from Chaos Crags (Lassen volcanic center, California, USA) show that pore- and crack-filling mineral precipitation can reduce porosity and permeability and increase strength, Young's modulus, and cohesion. A significant reduction in permeability, by as much as four orders of magnitude, will inhibit fluid circulation and create zones of high pore fluid pr…

Does periodization work? Athletes perform better in major events than in minor competitions

2021

Previous studies on periodization have led to the view that most athletes fail to peak at major events. These conclusions might be based on definitions of “peak performance” that are too narrow. In this study, a track and field athlete was defined as succeeding in a competition if their outcome was within the acceptable range from the best result of the season. The data are from seven championship finals and semifinals together with 42 Diamond League competitions from the 2010s, altogether 7,087 individual results. All field events and running events up to 400 m were included. The majority of athletes succeeded in major events (67.0% in sprint and 57.5% in field events). Overall, champions…

Northern Hemisphere atmospheric pattern enhancing Eastern Mediterranean Transient-type events during the past 1000 years

2021

High-resolution climate model simulations for the last millennium were used to elucidate the main winter Northern Hemisphere atmospheric pattern during enhanced Eastern Mediterranean Transient (EMT-type) events, a situation in which an additional overturning cell is detected in the Mediterranean at the Aegean Sea. The differential upward heat flux between the Aegean Basin and the Gulf of Lion was taken as a proxy of EMT-type events and correlated with winter mean geopotential height at 500 mbar in the Northern Hemisphere (20–90∘ N and 100∘ W–80∘ E). Correlations revealed a pattern similar to the East Atlantic/Western Russian (EA/WR) mode as the main driver of EMT-type events, with the past …

Antileishmanial Activity of the Genus Piper: A Systematic Review

2021

Background: Leishmaniases are anthropozoonotic vector-borne diseases, caused by the protozoan Leishmania spp. These diseases have significant morbidity and mortality worldwide and, as there are currently no vaccines available for their treatment, chemotherapy remains the mainstay for anti-leishmanial therapeutics. However, the severe side effects, reduced bioavailability, high cost and chemoresistance, amongst other problems, limit the use of available drugs. In recent years, natural compounds have shown promise as anti-leishmanial agents, especially those extracted from medicinal plants. The genus Piper has been used in traditional medicine and widely explored for its biological properties…

Plant hunting: exploring the behaviour of amateur botanists in the field

2021

We asked what are the behavioural and logistic preferences of professional and amateur botanists when exploring flora in the field. We extracted temporal and spatial data on vas- cular plant species occurrences from three datasets of Sicilian flora: a subset of iNaturalist, a dataset collected by a Facebook group focused on the flora of Sicily and a subset of the professional database European Vegetation Archive. We used the time span of individual contributor’s activity as a proxy of their commitment to collecting information about the flora of Sicily. Climate and landscape data were used to better characterize the spatial and temporal activity of data contributors. Finally, we assessed wh…

Diffusional Kurtosis Imaging in the Diffusion Imaging in Python Project

2021

ABSTRACTDiffusion-weighted magnetic resonance imaging (dMRI) measurements and models provide information about brain connectivity and are sensitive to the physical properties of tissue microstructure. Diffusional Kurtosis Imaging (DKI) quantifies the degree of non-Gaussian diffusion in biological tissue from dMRI. These estimates are of interest because they were shown to be more sensitive to microstructural alterations in health and diseases than measures based on the total anisotropy of diffusion which are highly confounded by tissue dispersion and fiber crossings. In this work, we implemented DKI in the Diffusion in Python (DIPY) project - a large collaborative open-source project which …

Development of a low-cost portable PAR device for crop management

2021

Context: It becomes essential to have precise monitoring of crop growth to ensure rapid action in case of problems. Plant growth depends on the biomass accumulated by photosynthesis that requires as an energy source, the photosynthetically active radiation (PAR). This local variable is essential to study the plant phenology and for ecophysiological models that predict the accumulation of dry matter on a daily basis. Objectives: We design and evaluate a low-cost portable device, PAR Acquisition Device (PARADe), combining a PAR radiation sensor and a microcontroller acquisition card (Arduino) in order to measure automatically the in-field photosynthetically active radiation.

Independent Validation of Sepsis Index for Sepsis Screening in the Emergency Department

2021

(1) Background: The early detection of sepsis is still challenging, and there is an urgent need for biomarkers that could identify patients at a high risk of developing it. We recently developed an index, namely the Sepsis Index (SI), based on the combination of two CBC parameters: monocyte distribution width (MDW) and mean monocyte volume (MMV). In this study, we sought to independently validate the performance of SI as a tool for the early detection of patients at a high risk of sepsis in the Emergency Department (ED). (2) Methods: We enrolled all consecutive patients attending the ED with a request of the CBC. MDW and MMV were measured on samples collected in K3-EDTA tubes on the UniCel …

Analysis of different key behavioral patterns to score in elite taekwondoists according to the weight category and gender

2021

Traditionally, research in taekwondo has focused on athletes' overall performance considering the entire sample of the tournament or analyzed selected bouts while ignoring behavioral differences of athletes according to their gender and weight category. Thus, the aim of this study was to analyze the behavioral patterns used to score points in the London Olympic Games according to gender and weight category [fin (FW), feather (FTW), light (LW), and heavy (HW)] of the athletes. A total of 24,940 actions were analyzed by using observational methodology, a mixed method methodology where lag sequential and polar coordinate analysis were applied. Different patterns could be seen in the actions pe…

THE ANTINEOPLASTIC ROLE OF STAT5 INHIBITION IN BCRABL1-POSITIVE CELLS EXPOSED TO PIMOZIDE ALONE AND IN COMBINATION WITH DASATINIB AND PONATINIB

2021

EVEN though the last decades have seen the success of the targeted treatments for BCRABL1-positive Chronic Myeloid Leukemia (CML), with the outstanding achievement of placing selected patients into the so called treatment-free remission, a minor part of these subjects face TKI resistance and/or intolerance. Resistance is a challenging point in the clinical management of CML, occurring in approximately 10–20% of CML cases, due to several mechanisms, among which point mutations of the BCR‐ABL kinase domain, BCRABL overexpression or alternative splicing, sub-efficient plasma concentration of the inhibitor and abnormal drug efflux/influx. The Signal Transducer and Activators of Transcription (S…

Web Usage Mining by Neural Hybrid Prediction with Markov Chain Components

2021

This paper presents and evaluates a two-level web usage prediction technique, consisting of a neural network in the first level and contextual component predictors in the second level. We used Markov chains of different orders as contextual predictors to anticipate the next web access based on specific web access history. The role of the neural network is to decide, based on previous behaviour, whose predictor’s output to use. The predicted web resources are then prefetched into the cache of the browser. In this way, we considerably increase the hit rate of the web browser, which shortens the load times. We have determined the optimal configuration of the proposed hybrid predictor on a real…

Lifetime predictions of non-ionic and ionic biopolymers: kinetic studies by non-isothermal thermogravimetric analysis

2021

AbstractIn this paper, films based on sustainable polymers with variable charge have been investigated by non-isothermal thermogravimetry in order to predict their lifetime, which is a key parameter for their potential use in numerous technological and biomedical applications. Specifically, chitosan has been selected as positively charged biopolymer, while alginate has been chosen as negatively charged biopolymer. Among non-ionic polymers, methylcellulose has been investigated. Thermogravimetric measurements at variable heating rates (5, 10, 15 and 20 °C min−1) have been performed for all the polymers to study their degradation kinetics by using isoconversional procedures combined with ‘Mas…

Pseudorapidity distributions of charged particles as a function of mid- and forward rapidity multiplicities in pp collisions at √s = 5.02, 7 and 13 T…

2021

The multiplicity dependence of the pseudorapidity density of charged particles in proton–proton (pp) collisions at centre-of-mass energies √s = 5.02, 7 and 13 TeV measured by ALICE is reported. The analysis relies on track segments measured in the midrapidity range (|η|<1.5). Results are presented for inelastic events having at least one charged particle produced in the pseudorapidity interval |η|<1. The multiplicity dependence of the pseudorapidity density of charged particles is measured with mid- and forward rapidity multiplicity estimators, the latter being less affected by autocorrelations. A detailed comparison with predictions from the PYTHIA 8 and EPOS LHC event generators is also p…

Modification of Angular Kinematics and Spatiotemporal Parameters during Running after Central and Peripheral Fatigue

2021

Fatigue causes kinematics modifications during running, and it could be related to injuries. The aim was to identify and compare the effects of central and peripheral fatigue on angular kinematics and spatiotemporal parameters during running. Angular kinematics and spatiotemporal parameters were evaluated using an infrared motion capture system and were registered during 2 min treadmill running in pre- and post-fatigue states in eighteen male recreational runners. Central fatigue was induced by a 30 min running fatigue protocol on a treadmill, while peripheral fatigue in quadriceps and hamstrings muscles was induced by an isokinetic dynamometer fatigue protocol. Central fatigue increased th…

Elementary Integration of Superelliptic Integrals

2021

Consider a superelliptic integral $I=\int P/(Q S^{1/k}) dx$ with $\mathbb{K}=\mathbb{Q}(\xi)$, $\xi$ a primitive $k$th root of unity, $P,Q,S\in\mathbb{K}[x]$ and $S$ has simple roots and degree coprime with $k$. Note $d$ the maximum of the degree of $P,Q,S$, $h$ the logarithmic height of the coefficients and $g$ the genus of $y^k-S(x)$. We present an algorithm which solves the elementary integration problem of $I$ generically in $O((kd)^{\omega+2g+1} h^{g+1})$ operations.

What do we know about growth of vessel elements of secondary xylem in woody plants?

2021

Despite extensive knowledge about vessel element growth and the determination of the axial course of vessels, these processes are still not fully understood. They are usually explained as resulting primarily from hormonal regulation in stems. This review focuses on an increasingly discussed aspect - mechanical conditions in the vascular cambium. Mechanical conditions in cambial tissue are important for the growth of vessel elements, as well as other cambial derivatives. In relation to the type of stress acting on cambial cells (compressive versus tensile stress) we: (i) discuss the shape of the enlarging vessel elements observed in anatomical sections; (ii) present hypotheses regarding the …

Exploring relationships between drought and epidemic cholera in Africa using generalised linear models

2021

AbstractBackgroundTemperature and precipitation are known to affect Vibrio cholerae outbreaks. Despite this, the impact of drought on outbreaks has been largely understudied. Africa is both drought and cholera prone and more research is needed in Africa to understand cholera dynamics in relation to drought.MethodsHere, we analyse a range of environmental and socioeconomic covariates and fit generalised linear models to publicly available national data, to test for associations with several indices of drought and make cholera outbreak projections to 2070 under three scenarios of global change, reflecting varying trajectories of CO2 emissions, socio-economic development, and population growth…

Macrophages govern antiviral responses in human lung tissues protected from SARS-CoV-2 infection

2021

SUMMARYThe majority of SARS-CoV-2 infections among healthy individuals result in asymptomatic to mild disease. However, the immunological mechanisms defining effective lung tissue protection from SARS-CoV-2 infection remain elusive. Unlike mice solely engrafted with human fetal lung xenograft (fLX), mice co-engrafted with fLX and a myeloid-enhanced human immune system (HNFL mice) are protected against SARS-CoV-2 infection, severe inflammation, and histopathology. Effective control of viral infection in HNFL mice associated with significant macrophage infiltration, and the induction of a potent macrophage-mediated interferon response. The pronounced upregulation of the USP18-ISG15 axis (a ne…
