P -wave nucleon-pion scattering amplitude in the Δ(1232) channel from lattice QCD

2021

We determine the $\mathrm{\ensuremath{\Delta}}(1232)$ resonance parameters using lattice QCD and the L\"uscher method. The resonance occurs in elastic pion-nucleon scattering with ${J}^{P}=3/{2}^{+}$ in the isospin $I=3/2$, $P$-wave channel. Our calculation is performed with ${N}_{f}=2+1$ flavors of clover fermions on a lattice with $L\ensuremath{\approx}2.8\text{ }\text{ }\mathrm{fm}$. The pion and nucleon masses are ${m}_{\ensuremath{\pi}}=255.4(1.6)\text{ }\text{ }\mathrm{MeV}$ and ${m}_{N}=1073(5)\text{ }\text{ }\mathrm{MeV}$, respectively, and the strong decay channel $\mathrm{\ensuremath{\Delta}}\ensuremath{\rightarrow}\ensuremath{\pi}N$ is found to be above the threshold. To thorough…

Maternal and paternal psychological control and adolescents' negative adjustment: A dyadic longitudinal study in three countries.

2021

Psychological Control (PC) interferes with autonomy-related processes in adolescence and has a negative impact on adolescents’ development related to internalizing and externalizing problems. Several scholars suggested that PC can be used differently by mothers and fathers. However, these differences are still understudied and mainly grounded on maternal and/or adolescents’ perspectives, leading to potentially incomplete inferences on the effects of PC. The present study extends previous research on PC in two directions. First, we tested the dyadic and cumulative effects of maternal and paternal PC on adolescents’ antisocial behaviors and anxious-depressive symptoms. Secondly, we explored t…

A study of Type B uncertainties associated with the photoelectric effect in low-energy Monte Carlo simulations

2021

The goal of this manuscript is to estimate Type B uncertainties in absorbed-dose calculations arising from the different implementations in current state-of-the-art Monte Carlo codes of low-energy photon cross-sections (<200 keV). Monte Carlo simulations are carried out using three codes widely used in the low-energy domain: PENELOPE-2018, EGSnrc, and MCNP. Mass energy-absorption coefficients for water, air, graphite, and their respective ratios; absorbed dose; and photon-fluence spectra are considered. Benchmark simulations using similar cross-sections have been performed. The differences observed between these quantities when different cross-sections are considered are taken to be a go…

Productivity analysis of Latvian companies using ORBIS database

2021

International audience; This research study uses ORBIS microdata at the company level to analyse productivity of 167 thousand economically active Latvian companies over 2011-2018. The aim of the study is twofold-to find factors consistently associated with productivity at the company level; and to recommend possible criteria for companies to receive a state support (from the view of enhancing aggregate productivity in the long term). Our research results show that productivity of Latvian companies is positively related to their size, age, as well as location closer to Riga and other big cities. However, there is a substantial within-group variation in productivity between companies. Multiva…

Coplanar Indirect-Navigated Intraoperative Ultrasound: Matching Un-navigated Probes With Neuronavigation During Neurosurgical Procedures. How We Do I…

2021

BACKGROUND Intraoperative ultrasound (IOUS) is becoming more and more adopted in neurosurgery, since it has been associated to greater extent of resection (EOR) and to gross total resection (GTR) during brain tumor surgery. IOUS main limitations are spatial resolution, width and orientation of the field of view and scan quality, which are operator-dependent. Furthermore, most neurosurgeons are not confident with this technique, which needs a long learning curve in order to identify and interpret anatomic structures. OBJECTIVE To describe an effective procedure to take advantages of both IOUS and neuronavigation in case of lack of a navigated ultrasound system. METHODS We propose a reliable …

Changes in Sitting Time, Screen Exposure and Physical Activity during COVID-19 Lockdown in South American Adults: A Cross-Sectional Study

2021

The worldwide prevalence of insufficient physical activity (PA) and prolonged sedentary behavior (SB) were high before the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic. Measures that were taken by governments (such as home confinement) to control the spread of COVID-19 may have affected levels of PA and SB. This cross-sectional study among South American adults during the first months of COVID-19 aims to (i) compare sitting time (ST), screen exposure, moderate PA (MPA), vigorous PA (VPA), and moderate-to-vigorous PA (MVPA) before and during lockdown to sociodemographic correlates and (ii) to assess the impact of lockdown on combinations of groups reporting meeting/not-meeting PA recommendations and enga…

Reducing the Time to Detect Cyber Attacks : Combining Attack Simulation With Detection Logic

2021

Cyber attacks have become harder to detect, causing the average detection time of a successful data breach to be over six months and typically costing the target organization nearly four million dollars. The attacks are becoming more sophisticated and targeted, leaving unprepared environments easy prey for the attackers. Organizations with working antivirus systems and firewalls may be surprised when they discover their network has been encrypted by a ransomware operator. This raises a serious question, how did the attacks go undetected? The conducted research focuses on the most common pitfalls regarding late or even non-existent detection by defining the root cause behind the failed detec…

A non-stationary relay-based 3D MIMO channel model with time-variant path gains for human activity recognition in indoor environments

2021

AbstractExtensive research showed that the physiological response of human tissue to exposure to low-frequency electromagnetic fields is the induction of an electric current in the body segments. As a result, each segment of the human body behaves as a relay, which retransmits the radio-frequency (RF) signal. To investigate the impact of this phenomenon on the Doppler characteristics of the received RF signal, we introduce a new three-dimensional (3D) non-stationary channel model to describe the propagation phenomenon taking place in an indoor environment. Here, the indoor space is equipped with a multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) system. A single person is moving in the indoor space an…

Epäfokus laadullisessa tutkimuksessa

2021

Artikkelin tavoitteena on käsitteellistää epäfokusta laadullisessa tutkimuksessa; tuoda läpinäkyvyyttä tutkimusprosessin epälineaarisuute…

The Ghost of the Hawk: Top Predator Shaping Bird Communities in Space and Time

2021

Despite the wide recognition that strongly interacting species can influence distributions of other species, species interactions are often disregarded when assessing or projecting biodiversity distributions. In particular, it remains largely uncharted the extent to which the disappearance of a keystone species cast repercussions in the species composition of future communities. We tested whether an avian top predator can exert both positive and negative effects on spatial distribution of other species, and if these effects persist even after the predator disappeared. We acquired bird count data at different distances from occupied and non-occupied nests of Northern goshawks Accipiter genti…

Taking a Break from News : A Five-nation Study of News Avoidance in the Digital Era

2021

This article comparatively examines news avoidance in a rapidly changing media environment. We utilize findings from a large dataset of 488 in-depth interviews with media consumers, conducted in Argentina, Finland, Israel, Japan, and the US. We aim to make a contribution to the study of news avoidance by providing a comprehensive and nuanced understanding of the drivers, practices, and patterns of news avoidance as they occur in and are shaped by a variety of national contexts. We argue that news avoidance is shaped not only by individual characteristics, but is also manifested and performed as part of specific time frames and socio-cultural factors. We distinguish two drivers of intentiona…

Changes in Surface Free Energy and Surface Conductivity of Carbon Nanotube/Polyimide Nanocomposite Films Induced by UV Irradiation.

2021

Changes in surface energy and electrical conductivity of polyimide (PI)-based nanocomposite films filled with carbon nanotubes (CNTs) induced by UV exposure are gaining considerable interest in microelectronic, aeronautical, and aerospace applications. However, the underlying mechanism of PI photochemistry and oxidation reactions induced by UV irradiation upon the surface in the presence of CNTs is still not clear. Here, we probed the interplay between CNTs and PIs under UV exposure in the surface properties of CNT/PI nanocomposite films. Changes in contact angles and surface electrical conductivity at the surface of CNT/PI nanocomposite films after UV exposure were measured. The unpaired e…

Understanding the Stabilization and Tunability of Divalent Europium 2.2.2B Cryptates

2021

Lanthanides such as europium with more accessible divalent states are useful for studying redox stability afforded by macrocyclic organic ligands. Substituted cryptands, such as 2.2.2B cryptand, that increase the oxidative stability of divalent europium also provide coordination environments that support synthetic alterations of Eu(II) cryptate complexes. Two single crystal structures were obtained containing nine-coordinate Eu(II) 2.2.2B cryptate complexes that differ by a single coordination site, the occupation of which is dictated by changes in reaction conditions. A crystal structure containing a [Eu(2.2.2B)Cl]+ complex is obtained from a methanol-THF solvent mixture, while a methanol-…

One-Component DNA Mechanoprobes for Facile Mechanosensing in Photopolymerized Hydrogels and Elastomers.

2021

DNA mechanosensors offer unique properties for mechano-adaptive and self-reporting materials, such as programmable bond strength and geometrical strain response, tunable fluorescent strain sensing, interfacing to biological systems, and the ability to store mechanical information. However, the facile incorporation of advanced DNA motifs into polymer networks and achieving robustness in application settings remain difficult. Herein, we introduce one-component DNA mechanoprobes that can be easily polymerized into polymer hydrogels and even elastomers to allow strain-induced fluorescence sensing. The all-in-one mechanoprobe contains a DNA hairpin for programmable force sensing, an internal flu…
