Association Between COL5a1, COL11a1, and COL11a2 Gene Variations and Rotator Cuff Tendinopathy in Young Athletes
2021
Objective Tendinopathy is a prevalent condition in young athletes and in older nonathletic people. Recent tendinopathy research has shown a growing interest in the role played by genetic factors, basically genes involved in collagen synthesis and regulation, in view of collagen disorganization typically present in tendon pathologies. Design A case-control, genotype-phenotype association study. Setting La Ribera Hospital, Valencia, Spain. Participants A group of 137 young athletes (49 with rotator cuff tendon pathology and 88 healthy counterparts) who played upper-limb-loading sports were clinically and ultrasound (US) assessed for rotator cuff tendinopathy were included. Intervention Geneti…
INTACT vs. FANS for Cell-Type-Specific Nuclei Sorting: A Comprehensive Qualitative and Quantitative Comparison
2021
Increasing numbers of studies seek to characterize the different cellular sub-populations present in mammalian tissues. The techniques “Isolation of Nuclei Tagged in Specific Cell Types” (INTACT) or “Fluorescence-Activated Nuclei Sorting” (FANS) are frequently used for isolating nuclei of specific cellular subtypes. These nuclei are then used for molecular characterization of the cellular sub-populations. Despite the increasing popularity of both techniques, little is known about their isolation efficiency, advantages, and disadvantages or downstream molecular effects. In our study, we compared the physical and molecular attributes of sfGFP+ nuclei isolated by the two methods—INTACT and FAN…
Ultra-coarse-graining of homopolymers in inhomogeneous systems
2021
Abstract We develop coarse-grained (CG) models for simulating homopolymers in inhomogeneous systems, focusing on polymer films and droplets. If the CG polymers interact solely through two-body potentials, then the films and droplets either dissolve or collapse into small aggregates, depending on whether the effective polymer–polymer interactions have been determined from reference simulations in the bulk or at infinite dilution. To address this shortcoming, we include higher order interactions either through an additional three-body potential or a local density-dependent potential (LDP). We parameterize the two- and three-body potentials via force matching, and the LDP through relative entr…
Laser in surgical scar clearance : an update review
2021
Scar formation is a consequence of wound healing that developed from damaged tissue either from physical injury or surgical incision. A hypertrophic scar develops due to an abnormal healing response to trauma. It might lead to serious functional and cosmetic disability. There are numerous methods mentioned in the literature to treat such scars but to date, no single method has been known to cure them. In this review, we focused on differences between various types of nonsurgical management of hypertrophic scar focusing on the indication, mechanism of action, and efficacy of the pulsed dye laser (PDL), fractional carbon dioxide laser (fCO2), Er-YAG laser, and intense pulse light (IPL). The l…

Overcoming barriers to new regional industrial path development: The role of a centre for research‐based innovation
2021
How regional industries can develop in an economically sustainable way is high on the research agenda. While the literature on regional change has focused primarily on historical case studies, it has said less about the barriers that hinder the desired change. This article contributes to a better understanding of barriers in regional innovation systems that hamper new regional industrial path development. Furthermore, the article analyses how a new knowledge organisation, the Centre for Research‐based Innovation Offshore Mechatronics in the Agder region of Norway, can contribute to overcoming these barriers. The Centre, which is a policy instrument funded by the Research Council of Norway, …
Marginal and Internal Precision of Zirconia Four-Unit Fixed Partial Denture Frameworks Produced Using Four Milling Systems
2021
Background: CAD/CAM systems enable the production of fixed partial dentures with small and reproducible internal and marginal gaps. Purpose: The purpose of this study was to evaluate the reproducibility of the marginal and internal adaptations of four-unit fixed partial denture frameworks produced using four CAD/CAM systems. Materials and Methods: Prepared dies of a master model that simulated the loss of the first left molar were measured. Fifteen frameworks were manufactured using four CAD/CAM systems (A–D). The internal fit was determined by the replica technique, and the marginal gap was determined by microscopy. ANOVA was carried out to detect significant differences, and the Bonferron…
Coexistence of superconductivity and spin-splitting fields in superconductor/ferromagnetic insulator bilayers of arbitrary thickness
2021
Ferromagnetic insulators (FI) can induce a strong exchange field in an adjacent superconductor (S) via the magnetic proximity effect. This manifests as spin splitting of the BCS density of states of the superconductor, an important ingredient for numerous superconducting spintronics applications and the realization of Majorana fermions. A crucial parameter that determines the magnitude of the induced spin splitting in FI/S bilayers is the thickness of the S layer d: In very thin samples, the superconductivity is suppressed by the strong magnetism. By contrast, in very thick samples, the spin splitting is absent at distances away from the interface. In this work, we calculate the density of …
A Study on Distributed Fault-Tolerant Service Architectures for Critical Software Systems
2021
Reliable systems have been the subject of much research in the past years, with societal dependency on computer systems becoming more and more apparent. With more and more organizations embracing DevOps culture, there is a persistent need to understand how these systems are built and what their trade-offs are. This paper discusses and benchmarks the components of a modern fault tolerant and easily scalable system, designed to maximize up-time. The paper also describes the techniques used in the development of such a system. The system architecture described is implemented through several services deployed for a new critical single sign-on system deployed at CERN (The European Laboratory for…
The FRAILMar Study Protocol: Frailty in Patients With Advanced Chronic Kidney Disease Awaiting Kidney Transplantation. A Randomized Clinical Trial of…
2021
Introduction: Frailty is very frequent among patients with chronic kidney disease (CKD) who are awaiting deceased donor kidney transplantation (KT), and transplant outcomes are worsened in those frail recipients. Frailty and poor fitness powerfully predict mortality, kidney graft survival, and healthcare utilization after KT. Intervention is essential to improve survival and quality of life for frail CKD patients, regardless of their age. Studies of post-transplant physical therapy intervention have been met with limited success, in large part due to high dropout rates. A pre-transplant clinical framework for multimodal prehabilitation interventions including physical therapy, nutritional m…
Henri Lefebvre’s lessons from the Bauhaus
2021
Throughout his writings, Henri Lefebvre made sporadic observations on the German art, design, and architecture school Bauhaus. His commentary on the Bauhaus can be read in light of his wider criticism of Modernist architecture and its political project. Despite its revolutionary aspirations, the Bauhaus provided ‘the architectural requirements of state capitalism’. This article argues that looking at Lefebvre’s ambiguous reading of the Bauhaus unveils the more complex trajectory of his thinking on Modernist utopian impulses to change society through design. Alongside his criticism of the Bauhaus as tailor made for what Lefebvre calls the neocapitalist state, his work also includes more posi…

Integrative descriptions of two new Macrobiotus species (Tardigrada, Eutardigrada, Macrobiotidae) from Mississippi (USA) and Crete (Greece)
2021
In this paper, we describe two new Macrobiotus species from Mississippi (USA) and Crete (Greece) by means of integrative taxonomy. Detailed morphological data from light and scanning electron microscopy, as well as molecular data (sequences of four genetic markers: 18S rRNA, 28S rRNA, ITS-2 and COI), are provided in support of the descriptions of the new species. Macrobiotus annewintersaesp. nov. from Mississippi belongs to the Macrobiotus persimilis complex (Macrobiotus clade B) and exhibits a unique egg processes morphology, similar only to Macrobiotus anemone Meyer, Domingue & Hinton, 2014, but mainly differs from that species by the presence of eyes, granulation on all legs, den…

Estimation of causal effects with small data in the presence of trapdoor variables
2021
We consider the problem of estimating causal effects of interventions from observational data when well-known back-door and front-door adjustments are not applicable. We show that when an identifiable causal effect is subject to an implicit functional constraint that is not deducible from conditional independence relations, the estimator of the causal effect can exhibit bias in small samples. This bias is related to variables that we call trapdoor variables. We use simulated data to study different strategies to account for trapdoor variables and suggest how the related trapdoor bias might be minimized. The importance of trapdoor variables in causal effect estimation is illustrated with rea…
Model independent analysis of the angular observables in B0→K*0μ+μ− and B+→K*+μ+μ−
2021
We analyse the results recently presented on the $B^{+} \to K^{*+} \mu^+ \mu^-$ angular observables by the LHCb Collaboration which show indications for New Physics beyond the Standard Model. Within a model-independent analysis, we compare the fit results with the corresponding results for the angular observables in $B^{0} \to K^{*0} \mu^+ \mu^-$.
Mediterranean diet and sars-cov-2 infection: Is there any association? a proof-of-concept study
2021
The aim of this observational study was investigating the possible correlation between adherence to the Mediterranean diet (MeD) and SARS-COV-2 infection rates and severity among healthcare professionals (HCPs). An online self-administrated questionnaire (evaluating both MeD adherence and dietary habits) was filled out by HCPs working in Piedmont (Northern Italy) from 15 January to 28 February 2021. Out of the 1206 questionnaires collected, 900 were considered reliable and analyzed. Individuals who reported the SARS-COV-2 infection (n = 148) showed a significantly lower MeD score, with a lower adherence in fruit, vegetables, cereals, and olive oil consumption. In a logistic regression model…

2021
The key role of APP for Alzheimer pathogenesis is well established. However, perinatal lethality of germline knockout mice lacking the entire APP family has so far precluded the analysis of its physiological functions for the developing and adult brain. Here, we generated conditional APP/APLP1/APLP2 triple KO (cTKO) mice lacking the APP family in excitatory forebrain neurons from embryonic day 11.5 onwards. NexCre cTKO mice showed altered brain morphology with agenesis of the corpus callosum and disrupted hippocampal lamination. Further, NexCre cTKOs revealed reduced basal synaptic transmission and drastically reduced long-term potentiation that was associated with reduced dendritic length …
Computational Offloading in Mobile Edge with Comprehensive and Energy Efficient Cost Function: A Deep Learning Approach
2021
In mobile edge computing (MEC), partial computational offloading can be intelligently investigated to reduce the energy consumption and service delay of user equipment (UE) by dividing a single task into different components. Some of the components execute locally on the UE while the remaining are offloaded to a mobile edge server (MES). In this paper, we investigate the partial offloading technique in MEC using a supervised deep learning approach. The proposed technique, comprehensive and energy efficient deep learning-based offloading technique (CEDOT), intelligently selects the partial offloading policy and also the size of each component of a task to reduce the service delay and energy …

Advocacy of targeting protease‐activated receptors in severe coronavirus disease 2019
2021
Identifying drug targets mitigating vascular dysfunction, thrombo-inflammation and thromboembolic complications in COVID-19 is essential. COVID-19 coagulopathy differs from sepsis coagulopathy. Factors that drive severe lung pathology and coagulation abnormalities in COVID-19 are not understood. Protein-protein interaction studies indicate that the tagged viral bait protein ORF9c directly interacts with PAR2, which modulates host cell IFN and inflammatory cytokines. In addition to direct interaction of SARS-CoV-2 viral protein with PARs, we speculate that activation of PAR by proteases plays a role in COVID-19-induced hyperinflammation. In COVID-19-associated coagulopathy elevated levels of…
Exploiting Reaction-Diffusion Conditions to Trigger Pathway Complexity in the Growth of a MOF.
2021
Coordination polymers (CPs), including metal–organic frameworks (MOFs), are crystalline materials with promising applications in electronics, magnetism, catalysis, and gas storage/separation. However, the mechanisms and pathways underlying their formation remain largely undisclosed. Herein, we demonstrate that diffusion-controlled mixing of reagents at the very early stages of the crystallization process (i.e., within ≈40 ms), achieved by using continuous-flow microfluidic devices, can be used to enable novel crystallization pathways of a prototypical spin-crossover MOF towards its thermodynamic product. In particular, two distinct and unprecedented nucleation-growth pathways were experimen…

Synthesis of Enantiopure ω-(4-Fluorophenyl)-6,11-Methylene Lipoxin B4 Methyl Ester
2021
AbstractThe synthesis of Lipoxin B4 analogues (LXB4) to gain access to stabilized inflammation-resolving compounds is an active field of research. Focusing on variation and stabilization of the conjugated E,Z,E,E C6–C13 tetraene moiety of natural LXB4, a methylene bridge introduced between C6 and C11 suppresses any Z/E isomerization of the C8–C9 olefin. Furthermore, rapid ω-oxidation (C20) should be avoided by replacing the C18–C20 segment by an aromatic moiety. Optically active C1–C12 building blocks were accessed from methyl cycloheptatriene-1-carboxylate (C6–C11, C21) and glutaryl chloride (C1–C5) as described earlier. The ω-segment was generated via a five-step sequence starting from 4-…
Texturing of Indium Phosphide for Improving the Characteristics of Space Solar Cells
2021
This paper discusses and demonstrates the usefulness and prospects of using textured layers of indium phosphide as a material for space solar cells. Such designs improve the performance of the photovoltaic converter by increasing the effective area and surface roughness. Thus, it minimizes the background reflectivity of the surface. Textured layers on the InP surface were obtained by electrochemical etching using a bromous acid solution.
The Formation of a Collective Identity Through Expressions of ‘Love’ and ‘Hate’: An Exploratory Analysis of the Discourse of Football Fans in Germany…
2021
International audience; Football is an exemplary platform where the social dynamics within and between societies can be regularly observed. In addition, online message boards are a rich resource of everyday expressions where football fans express their ‘love’ of their clubs as well as their ‘disdain’ for others. We conducted a qualitative content analysis during two seasons of Olympique de Marseille and FC Bayern Munich as well as Toulouse FC and Hannover 96. Our analysis illustrates that hateful expressions that differentiate groups are much more prevalent and therefore more determinant in the formation of a collective identity. Furthermore, the analysis confirms that the self-conception c…
Heterovalent BiIII/PbII ionic substitution in one-dimensional trimethylsulfoxonium halide pseudo-perovskites (X = I, Br)
2021
We report on the synthesis and characterization of novel lead and bismuth hybrid (organic-inorganic) iodide and bromide pseudo-perovskites (ABX3) containing the trimethylsulfoxonium cation (CH3)3SO+ (TMSO) in the A site, Pb/Bi in the B site, and Br or I as X anions. All of these compounds are isomorphic and crystallize in the orthorhombic Pnma space group. Lead-based pseudo-perovskites consist of one-dimensional (1D) chains of face-sharing [PbX6] octahedra, while in the bismuth-based ones, the chains of [BiX6] are interrupted, with one vacancy every third site, leading to a zero-dimensional (0D) local structure based on separated [Bi2I9]3- dimers. Five solid solutions for the iodide with di…

Criterios y sistemas de promoción profesional y ascensos y no discriminación por razón de género
2021
The legal guarantees to protect workers’ right to professional promotion and/or advancement in their profesional careers without suffering gender discrimination is a highly important issue in order to achieve an effective substantive equality between women and men in the labour relations field. To eradicate or, at least, considerably reduce the observed horizontal and vertical segregation in our labour market today, it is necessary to identify key factors such as those preventing female workers from professional promotion or, at least, those making their promotion more difficult than in the case of their male colleagues. The aim of this paper/report is to point out the main key factors that…

Understanding star-fundamental algebras
2021
Star-fundamental algebras are special finite dimensional algebras with involution ∗ * over an algebraically closed field of characteristic zero defined in terms of multialternating ∗ * -polynomials. We prove that the upper-block matrix algebras with involution introduced in Di Vincenzo and La Scala [J. Algebra 317 (2007), pp. 642–657] are star-fundamental. Moreover, any finite dimensional algebra with involution contains a subalgebra mapping homomorphically onto one of such algebras. We also give a characterization of star-fundamental algebras through the representation theory of the symmetric group.
