Plasticity of retinal ribbon synapses.

1996

Ribbon synapses differ from conventional chemical synapses in that they contain, within the cloud of synaptic vesicles (SV's), a specialized synaptic body, most often termed synaptic ribbon (SR). This body assumes various forms. Reconstructions reveal that what appear as rod- or ribbon-like profiles in sections are in fact rectangular or horseshoe-shaped plates. Moreover, spherical, T-shaped, table-shaped, and highly pleomorphic bodies may be present. In mammals, ribbon synapses are present in afferent synapses of photoreceptors, bipolar nerve cells, and hair cells of both the organ of Corti and the vestibular organ. Synaptic ribbons (SR's) are also found in the intrinsic cells of the third…

Heat-evoked vasodilatation in human hairy skin: axon reflexes due to low-level activity of nociceptive afferents.

1996

1. Spreading vasodilatation of the axon reflex type was evoked by contact heat stimulation of the hairy skin in the human forearm (13.3 cm2 stimulus area) and was detected by laser Doppler flowmetry at 8, 19 and 30 mm distance. 2. From a base temperature of 35 degrees C, rapidly rising short heat stimuli (4 degrees C s-1, 2 s plateau) elicited vasodilatation at an average threshold of 39.4 degrees C. For slowly rising sustained heat stimuli (64 s duration) the average threshold was 39.6 degrees C (n.s.) Laser Doppler flowmetry revealed a rapid onset within about 4 s, a long duration of several minutes beyond the end of the stimulus, and a rapid spread of vasodilatation to remote skin areas.…

An Efficient and Simple Entry to N-Substituted beta-Enamino Acid Derivatives from 2-Alkyl-2-oxazolines and 2-Alkyl-2-thiazolines.

1996

Reaction of azaenolates of 2-alkyl-oxa(thia)zolines 6 with imidoyl chlorides 7 as electrophiles to furnish masked N-substituted beta-enamino acid derivatives 1-2 in 70-90% yield is described. Alternative routes are discussed. Compounds 1-2 generally appear in one tautomeric form, imino or enamino, depending on the nature of the imidoyl chloride. The configuration of the enamino moiety (Z) and the conformation (s-cis) of compounds 1-2 obtained were established by an NMR study and unequivocally set by nuclear Overhauser effect difference experiments. An X-ray structure of compound 1e is also reported, showing a strong intramolecular NH.N hydrogen bond. Ab initio calculations (HF/3-21G and HF/…

Ligand-induced phosphorylation/dephosphorylation of the endogenous bradykinin B2 receptor from human fibroblasts.

1996

We have studied the ligand-induced phosphorylation/dephosphorylation of the bradykinin B2 receptor endogenously expressed in human HF-15 fibroblasts. An antiserum (AS346) to a synthetic peptide (CRS36), derived from the extreme carboxyl terminus of the human B2 receptor, precipitated the receptor from solubilized membranes of HF-15 cells that had been labeled with [32P]orthophosphate. A low basal level of B2 receptor phosphorylation was found in the absence of a ligand. Stimulation of the cells with the B2 receptor agonists bradykinin, [Lys0,Hyp3]bradykinin, kallidin, and T-kinin resulted in a rapid and efficient phosphorylation of the receptor. The B2 receptor antagonist HOE140 and the B1 …

Kinetics and state-dependent effects of verapamil on cardiac L-type calcium channels.

1996

The voltage dependence and the kinetics of block by verapamil of L-type calcium current (ICa) were investigated in ventricular myocytes from rat hearts using the whole-cell patch-clamp technique. ICa was elicited repetitively in response to depolarizing voltage pulses from -80 mV to 0 mV at different pulse intervals and durations. Verapamil reduced the magnitude of ICa in a frequency-dependent manner without tonic component. The time course of ICa remained unchanged suggesting that not open but inactivated channels were affected by the drug. The interaction of verapamil with inactivated channels was investigated by the application of twin pulses. In the presence of verapamil, the duration o…

Cytokines and their effects on maturation, differentiation and migration of dendritic cells.

1996

In this review the role of cytokines in the maturation and migration of phenotypically and functionally diverse dendritic cell (DC) subpopulations is discussed and their role in the progress of differentiation from bone marrow progenitors to lymphoid DC is described. GM-CSF is the most important cytokine for the development of functional DC and acts in concert with a varying mixture of other cytokines such as IL-4, IL-1 and TNF-α to direct the development of individual DC subpopulations.

“BEP” RNAs and Proteins Are Situated in the Animal Side of Sea Urchin Unfertilized Egg, Which Can Be Recognized by Female Pronuclear Localization

1996

Microsurgery experiments demonstrate that the animal side of the unfertilized sea urchin Paracentrotus lividus egg coincides with the side of the egg pronucleus location. It is demonstrated by means of in situ hybridization and immunostaining of whole mounts of animal or vegetal halves that the previously identified bep 1 and bep4 RNAs and their proteins are located in the animal part of the unfertilized egg and much less in the vegetal part. The addition of Fabs against BEP1 and BEP4 causes exogastrulation.

Mesonic and binding contributions to the EMC effect in a relativistic many-body approach

1996

We revise the conventional nuclear effects of Fermi motion, binding and pionic effects in deep inelastic lepton scattering using a relativistic formalism for an interacting Fermi sea and the local density approximation to translate results from nuclear matter to finite nuclei. In addition we also consider effects from rho-meson renormalization in the nucleus. The use of nucleon Green's functions in terms of their spectral functions offers a precise way to account for Fermi motion and binding. On the other hand the use of many body Feynman diagrams in a relativistic framework allows one to avoid using prescriptions given in the past to introduce relativistic corrections in a non relativistic…

Two-dimensional wavelet transform by wavelength multiplexing

1996

The wavelet transform is a useful tool for data compression, analysis of short transient pulses, optical correlators, etc. This transform was obtained optically by the use of the spatial or temporal multiplexing approaches. A two-dimensional wavelet transform is obtained with only one spatial channel. The information of the different scalings is carried in different wavelengths and summed incoherently at the output plane. Laboratory experimental results are demonstrated.

Small Angular Scale Simulations of the Microwave Sky

1996

We describe and compare two types of microwave sky simulations which are good for small angular scales. The first type uses expansions in spherical harmonics, and the second one is based on plane waves and the Fast Fourier Transform. The angular power spectrum is extracted from maps corresponding to both types of simulations, and the resulting spectra are appropriately compared. In this way, the features and usefulness of Fourier simulations are pointed out. For $\ell \geq 100$, all the simulations lead to similar accuracies; however, the CPU cost of Fourier simulations is $\sim 10$ times smaller than that for spherical harmonic simulations. For $\ell \leq 100$, the simulations based on sph…

Fractional-Fourier-transform calculation through the fast-Fourier-transform algorithm.

1996

A method for the calculation of the fractional Fourier transform (FRT) by means of the fast Fourier transform (FFT) algorithm is presented. The process involves mainly two FFT’s in cascade; thus the process has the same complexity as this algorithm. The method is valid for fractional orders varying from −1 to 1. Scaling factors for the FRT and Fresnel diffraction when calculated through the FFT are discussed.

Inhibition of gastric acid secretion by stress: A protective reflex mediated by cerebral nitric oxide

1996

Moderate somatic stress inhibits gastric acid secretion. We have investigated the role of endogenously released NO in this phenomenon. Elevation of body temperature by 3°C or a reduction of 35 mmHg (1 mmHg = 133 Pa) in blood pressure for 10 min produced a rapid and long-lasting reduction of distension-stimulated acid secretion in the rat perfused stomach in vivo . A similar inhibitory effect on acid secretion was produced by the intracisternal (i.c.) administration of oxytocin, a peptide known to be released during stress. Intracisternal administration of the NO-synthase inhibitor, N G -nitro- l -arginine methyl ester ( l -NAME) reversed the antisecretory effect induced by all these stimul…

Orthorhombic Phase of Crystalline Polyethylene: A Monte Carlo Study

1996

In this paper we present a classical Monte Carlo simulation of the orthorhombic phase of crystalline polyethylene, using an explicit atom force field with unconstrained bond lengths and angles and periodic boundary conditions. We used a recently developed algorithm which apart from standard Metropolis local moves employs also global moves consisting of displacements of the center of mass of the whole chains in all three spatial directions as well as rotations of the chains around an axis parallel to the crystallographic c-direction. Our simulations are performed in the NpT ensemble, at zero pressure, and extend over the whole range of temperatures in which the orthorhombic phase is experime…

Multichannel single-output color pattern recognition by use of a joint-transform correlator.

1996

A novel method for performing color image recognition by the use of the coherent joint-transform correlator is introduced. The input plane of the proposed method is a spatial rearrangement of the separation into color channels of both the color input scene and the color target. This input plane is gray scaled and monochromatic, thus it can be displayed by the use of amplitude spatial light modulators to achieve real-time operation. The system provides a single output-plane result of the optical coherent addition of the separate channels’ correlation outputs. At the output plane no electronic postprocessing is needed, and the detection decision is achieved simply by the application of thresh…

Single-photon Z decays and small neutrino masses

1996

We discuss some rare Z decay signatures associated with extensions of the Standard Model with spontaneous lepton number violation at the electroweak scale. We show that single-photon Z decays such as $Z \to \gamma H$ and $Z \to \gamma J J$ where H is a CP-even Higgs boson and J denotes the associated CP-odd Majoron may occur with branching ratios accessible to LEP sensitivities, even though the corresponding neutrino masses can be very small, as required in order to explain the deficit of solar neutrinos.

Reactive blending of a functionalized polyethylene with a semiflexible liquid crystalline copolyester

1996

Reactive blends (50/50 w/w) of a low molar mass polyethylene containing free carboxylic groups (PEox) and a semiflexible liquid crystalline polyester (SBH 1 : 1 : 2, by Eniricerche) have been prepared at 240 degrees C in a Brabender mixer, in the presence of Ti(OBu)(4) catalyst, for different mixing times (15, 60, and 120 min). In order to prove the formation of a PE-g-SBH copolymer, the blends have been fractionated by successive extractions with boiling toluene and xylene. The soluble fractions and the residues have been analyzed by Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy, thermogravimetry (TG and DTG), differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), and scanning electron microscopy (SEM)…

Z physics constraints on vector leptoquarks

1996

We analyze the constraints on vector leptoquarks coming from radiative corrections to $Z$ physics. We perform a global fitting to the LEP data including the oblique and non-universal contributions of the most general effective Lagrangian for vector leptoquarks, which exhibits the $SU(2)_L \times U(1)_Y$ gauge invariance. We show that the $Z$ physics leads to stronger bounds on second and third generation vectors leptoquarks than the ones obtained from low energy and the current collider experiments.

A urochordate putative homolog of human EB1, the protein which binds APC1

1996

Abstract The human EB1 protein has been cloned by virtue of its interaction with the C-terminus of the APC (adenomatous polyposis coli) protein, whose C-terminal truncated forms have been shown to accompany sporadic and familial forms of colorectal cancer. We have cloned a putative EB1 homolog from Botryllus schlosseri (Urochordata, Ascidiacea). The deduced protein is 287 amino acids long, and is identical with 48% of the residues in human EB1 and 24–25% in two yeast hypothetical proteins. We propose that such a high degree of conservation among EB1 homologs is indicative of an essential regulatory mechanism in eukaryotic cells.

Photoionization of adsorbates on sites with non-axial local symmetry. An example of the symmetry group

1996

We present an analysis of the influence of the local adsorption site symmetry on the angular distribution of photoelectrons ejected from adsorbed atoms or molecules. This analysis applies to photoelectron spectra obtained with photons of any energy in the VUV (photoelectron spectroscopy) or x-ray (XPS) regions, provided that the associated wave of the electron `sees' the neighbouring surface atoms. The adsorbate - substrate system is modelled by a cluster of symmetry group consisting of an adsorbate and several atoms of the substrate. The analysis applies also to clean surfaces of symmetry and to molecules of the symmetry group fixed in space. This local symmetry analysis is an alternative …

Transportation of complexing agents released by pulp and paper industry: A Finnish lake case

1996

Complexing agents (EDTA, DTPA) are used to bind metal ions in pulp and paper industry. Their role will increase significantly when the total chlorine free (TCF) processes will be applied to a larger extent. EDTA and DTPA were analysed in the waters from the southern part of the Lake Saimaa (SE Finland) influenced by the effluents of three pulp and paper mills. The samples were collected at different distances from the points of emission. The results of analyses suggest that EDTA can persist in lake water and is able to propagate for considerable distances, while DTPA can be detected only in the near surroundings of the site of release. Some EDTA was found even in the sampling points that we…

Optical polarization of neutron-rich sodium isotopes and β-NMR measurements of quadrupole moments

1996

The nuclear quadrupole moments of neutron-rich sodium isotopes are being investigated with the help of in-beam polarization by optical pumping in combination with $\beta$-NMR techniques. First measurements have yielded the quadrupole splittings of NMR signals in the lattice of LiNbO$_{3}$ for the isotopes $^{26}$Na, $^{27}$Na and $^{28}$Na. Interaction constants and ratios of the electric quadrupole moments are derived. In view of future experiments, $\beta$-decay asymmetries for the sequence of isotopes up to the $N$=20 neutron shell closure, $^{26-31}$Na, have been measured.

New potentially cytotoxic thiolatogold(I) complexes of 1,1′-bis(diphenylphosphino)ferrocene

1996

Abstract 1,1′-Bis[chlorogold(I) diphenylphosphino] ferrocene (1) was chosen as the starting material to synthesize new thiolato gold(I) complexes. This has been achieved by substituting the chlorine atoms by monofunctional and bifunctional thiolates affording ‘open’ thiolatogold complexes and trimetallic ferrocenophane-type structures, respectively. The new 1,1′-bis(2,6-dithia-1-phosphanyl)ferrocene (7) containing directly linked P and S atoms was also prepared but no gold complex was obtained. Compound 2 crystallizes in the monoclinic space group P21/n with a=10.2632), b=21.064(4), c=16.259(3) A , β=97.06(2)° and V=3.488(1) A 3 . Abstract A multidisciplinary study of the upper Albian—Cenomanian portion of the Cismon section (Venetian region, northern Italy) was undertaken in order to characterize the cyclic alternations of carbonate-rich and carbonate-poor layers and to investigate their possible origin and cyclic patterns. Limestone semicouplets are characterized by abundant radiolarians and micarbs (micron-sized calcitic fragments), common planktonic foraminifera, strong bioturbation, good oxygenation as expressed by the Mn* and V/(V+Ni) parameters, high Si/Al ratio, low K/Al, in the absence of pyrite and organic matter. Vortex dynamics in Bi2Sr2CaCu2O8-thin films in the presence of columnar defects

1996

With heavy ion irradiation we create continous amorphous columnar defects in Bi2Sr2CaCu2O8-thin films. With regard to a reliable comparison of irradiation effects three of four identical striplines on the same samples were exposed to different irradiation procedures. We performed irradiations as well parallel as under different angles with respect to the film $$\vec c$$ -axis. Beside an enlarged normal state resistivity after irradiation the films suffer a Tc-reduction proportional to the volume of the damaged material. The activation energy ascertained from resistive transitions shows best enhancement for magnetic field values close to the matching field. Measurements of the transport crit…

1. Phytoplankton dynamics, food chain changes and resilience in Lake Zwemlust, a shallow lake in The Netherlands, are described for the period 1986-94. 2. After biomanipulation in 1987, the lake moved through two alternative states, while the external nutrient loadings were maintained. A clear-water phase, mostly dominated by macrophytes, persisted from 1987 to 1991, and a rather turbid state, dominated by algae, occurred in the summers of 1992-94, after several consecutive and sustained perturbations affecting different parts of the food web in the lake. These two periods were characterized by different community structures. 3. The phytoplankton assemblage gradually changed in a pattern th…
