Stars of the Apocalypse. Observations on a Few Horror Movie Myths

The Hollywood star system always had a counterface in the horror films. The actors and actresses deemd to embody the characters depicted in the movies were not especially versatile and, generally speaking, they were limited to these roles and genre. In these cases a more profound identification between stars and characters was at stake. These mechanisms are analyzed in this text focusing in modern horror movies and stars.

Are epizoites biological indicators of a western Mediterranean striped dolphin die-off?

During a die-off of Mediterranean striped dolphins Stenella coeruleoalba in 1990-91, 82 individuals stranded on the Spanish coast were examined for crustacean ectoparasites and epizoites. Six species were detected: Syncyarnus aequus, PenneUa sp., Xenobalanus globicipitis, Conchoderma virgatum, Lepas pectinata and Lepas cf. hillii. The barnacles L. pectinata and L. cf. hillii are reported here for the first time on cetaceans; they were attached to the teeth. Administration of Escherichia coli endotoxin abolished the acid secretory response induced by a bolus injection of pentagastrin in the continuously perfused stomach of the anaesthetized rat. Likewise, acid secretion stimulated by the continuous intravenous perfusion of pentagastrin was inhibited by administration of interleukin-1 beta (IL-1 beta). In both cases pretreatment with NG-nitro-L-arginine methyl ester (L-NAME) but not dexamethasone or indomethacin substantially restored the secretory responses to pentagastrin. The response to administration of the specific monoamine oxidase A (MAO-A) blocker clorgyline was investigated in adult male Sprague-Dawley rats which were adrenalectomized four days prior to treatment or were additionally sympathectomized as newborns by injection of 6-hydroxydopamine. Heavy metals have been implicated in the mechanisms of endothelial damage. Influences of heavy metal ions on diverse cell types have been studied using a variety of in vitro and in vivo methods. Polymorphonuclear neutrophil granulocytes (PMNs) have physiological and pathological functions, including the modulation of adhesion to and destruction of endothelial cells (ECs). PMNs were studied during interaction with human umbilical vein ECs under exposure to zinc, nickel and cobalt using an in vitro model. Simulations with Smoothed Particles Confirm Stationary Shocks in Accretion Flows onto Black Holes

We present the results of time dependent numerical simulations of the accretion of gas onto Schartzschild black holes. We find that stable shocks are a common feature for flows of inviscid gas accreting with small angular momentum per unit mass. We used the Smoothed Particles Hydrodynamics tecnique, expressed into cylindrical coordinates to exploit the axial symmetry of the problem. For the case of 1-Dimensional axis-symmetric simulations we find that the shock location is exactly at the position predicted by the stationary analysis developed by Chakrabarti. The authors studied the changes in yeast and mould counts, pH, free and lactone acidity, colour and sugar composition undergone by honeys with water contents of 169, 188 and 220 g kg-1 on storage at refrigeration temperature (4–7°C), room temperature and 28°C for two years. Of the solid culture media assayed, honey agar and osmophilic medium fostered yeast growth while malt-extract agar and yeast-extract-malt-extract agar allowed for better development of filamentous fungi. The Kinetics of Excitonic Luminescence in Mixed Silver Halides

ABSTRACTTwo kinds of luminescence (excitonic luminescence and excitonic molecule luminescence) were investigated for solid solutions AgBr1-xClx after pulsed electron beam and N2 laser irradiation. Careful theoretical treatment of a set of experimental excitonic luminescence kinetics is presented. It is shown that the effective activation energy of Agoi migration is a linear function of the composition x. The narrow peak of the excitonic molecule luminescence shifts from 2.66ev in pure AgBr towards higher energies as x increases.

Novel aspect of amphotericin B action: accumulation in human monocytes potentiates killing of phagocytosed Candida albicans.

The influence of low doses of amphotericin B on the capacity of human monocytes to kill Candida albicans was investigated. Killing rates were quantified by a novel flow cytometric assay and were found to be 37% +/- 3% (standard error of the mean) after 3 h. Preincubation of monocytes for 6 to 20 h with low concentrations of amphotericin B (0.2 microgram/ml) resulted in a markedly augmented fungicidal capacity. Enhancement of killing was 80% +/- 11% (standard error of the mean) over that by the controls. MCM-41 and related materials as media for controlled polymerization processes

The synthesis of mesoporous MCM-41 type materials based on transition metal oxides and the polymerization of several monomers within MCM-41 is presented with the aim to specifically investigate the effects of the interface and confinement on host-guest interactions. In addition to standard MCM-41, material based on transition metal oxides is obtained although template removal has been unsuccessful for such compounds until now. In situ polymerization of styrene, methyl methacrylate and vinyl acetate is possible within the mesopore system.
