Tierexperimentelle untersuchungen zur rolle von entzündungsmediatoren bei der hornhautneovaskularisation

1984

Experimental investigations concerning the role of inflammatory compounds in corneal neovascularization.Natural and synthetic inflammatory compounds were implanted in the corneas of rabbits to clarify the question whether corneal neovascularization is induced by stromal edema alone, or by neovascular mediators. It could be demonstrated that prostaglandin E1 and E2 have an angiogenetic capacity, whereas their precursor (arachidonic acid) as well as PGA1, A2, B2, I2 and Thromboxan A2 were inactive in this regard.Histology showed that corneal neovascularization is always accompanied by the invasion of polymorphonuclear leukocytes. Corneal edema in the beginning of vascularization can be explai…

Infinite sets of conservation laws for linear and nonlinear field equations

1984

The relation between an infinite set of conservation laws of a linear field equation and the enveloping algebra of the space-time symmetry group is established. It is shown that each symmetric element of the enveloping algebra of the space-time symmetry group of a linear field equation generates a one-parameter group of symmetries of the field equation. The cases of the Maxwell and Dirac equations are studied in detail. Then it is shown that (at least in the sense of a power series in the ‘coupling constant’) the conservation laws of the linear case can be deformed to conservation laws of a nonlinear field equation which is obtained from the linear one by adding a nonlinear term invariant u…

The purification and properties of nucleoside phosphotransferase from mucosa of chicken intestine

1984

Abstract (1) Nucleoside phosphotransferase (nucleotide:3′-deoxynucleoside 5′-phosphotransferase, EC 2.7.1.77) has been purified from chicken intestine mucosa to apparent homogeneity. The enzyme is represented by a multisubunit protein at different degrees of association. It can dissociate into a compoenent with a marked fall in catalytic activity. (2) The associated forms are similar to the enzyme previously purified from chick embryo as regards: substrate specificity both with respect to nucleoside monophosphate donors and to deoxyribonucleoside acceptors; sigmoidicity in the rate curve with a variable phosphate donor; instability to heat, dilution and lowering of pH; the activating and pr…

Supernormal conduction in the right bundle branch: lack of influence of autonomic blockade.

1984

A programmed atrial stimulation at a driving rate of 100/min was performed in a 47-year-old woman with left bundle branch block. Supernormal conduction lasting 40 ms was revealed within the right bundle branch. After autonomic blockade (0.2 mg propranolol/kg body weight and 0.04 mg atropine/kg body weight) the position and duration of the supernormal conduction did not change. This suggests that the autonomic nervous system has no influence on the supernormal phase of conduction in the human intraventricular conduction system.

Optimum pulse shape for minimum spectral occupancy in FSK signals

1984

The characteristics of a frequency shift keying (FSK) signal giving rise to maximum power within a prescribed frequency band are determined. The baseband pulse shape extends over any integer number of bit periods. An integral equation for the optimum pulse shape is derived and some simple properties of the solution are investigated. The equation has been solved for some values of the product of the prescribed band times the pulse duration and the signal shape is shown. Our results for the particular case of pulses only one bit period long are presented for purpose of comparison with results known in the literature. Plots of out-of-band power for some values of the prescribed band and of pul…

Demonstration of spotted fever group rickettsiae in the tache noire of a healthy person in Sicily.

1984

A human case of rickettsial infection occurred in Sicily following tick bite. The patient did not have fever, the typical nodular rash, or other symptoms of illness other than development of a tache noire containing spotted fever group rickettsiae, which were demonstrated by immunofluorescence. A high titer of antibodies of the IgG class suggests that the patient may have had previous exposure to Rickettsia conorii or a related spotted fever group rickettsia. An anamnestic response may be hypothesized to have conferred partial immunity, with resulting containment of rickettsiae at the site of inoculation.

H2-antihistaminics. 20. Structure-activity relationships in H2-receptor antagonists containing a 4-pyrimidone moiety.

1984

In a series of 5,6-substituted 4- pyrimidones 1 a-v the H2-antihistaminic activity was determined (guinea-pig atrium) and lipophilicity data are given in form of Rmo -values. The influence of different substituents at position 5 or 6 of a pyrimidone moiety has been studied. Quantitative structure-activity analyses showed the importance of lipophilicity for drug activity. Additionally other physicochemical substituent-properties may play a major role.

Gastric histamine methyltransferase: Different methylation rates for enantiomers of side-chain methylated histamine analogues using a highly purified…

1984

The inhibitor/activator and substrate properties of enantiomers of two methylated histamines (MH) were investigated using a histamine methyltransferase preparation which was purified 1207-fold from pig fundic mucosa by ultracentrifugation, ion-exchange chromatography on DEAE-cellulose and preparative electrofocusing. In 1-100 microM concentrations, S-alpha-MH and R-alpha-MH were acceptor substrates as good as histamine itself. When substrate concentrations were increased to 1 mM these substances were methylated to an even greater extent than histamine, since they did not exert substrate inhibition on HMT. Introduction of a further methyl-group into the N alpha-position reduced acceptor subs…

Renormalization-scheme ambiguity and perturbation theory near a fixed point

1984

We consider the perturbative calculation of critical exponents in massless, renormalizable theories having a nontrivial fixed point. In conventional perturbation theory, all results depend on the arbitrary renormalization scheme used. We show how to resolve this problem, following the "principle of minimal sensitivity" approach. At least three orders of perturbation theory are required for quantitative results. We give scheme-independent criteria for determining the presence or absence of a fixed point in $n\mathrm{th}$ order, and discuss the conditions under which perturbative results might be reliable. As illustrations we discuss QED with many flavors, and ${({\ensuremath{\varphi}}^{4})}_…

Determination of the apparent activation energy of dielectric relaxation phenomena by means of the representation of ε” as a function of T at constan…

1984

Abstract The main purpose of this work is to justify the use of the positions of the maxima of e” versus T curves when calculating the apparent activation energy in secondary dielectric relaxations or in the relaxation associated with the glass transition. To exemplify this, phenomenological models as well as experimental results for methacrylic polymers are discussed.

Stochastic seismic analysis of multidegree of freedom systems

1984

Abstract A unconditionally stable step-by-step procedure is proposed to evaluate the mean square response of a linear system with several degrees of freedom, subjected to earthquake ground motion. A non-stationary modulated random process, obtained as the product of a deterministic time envelope function and a stationary noise, is used to simulate earthquake acceleration. The accuracy of the procedure and its extension to nonlinear systems are discussed. Numerical examples are given for a hysteretic system, a duffing oscillator and a linear system with several degrees of freedom.

Muon states in uniaxially strained iron

1984

Effects of lattice relaxation, quantum motion, and uniaxial strain on the internal field at a positive-muon site in iron have been calculated. The uniaxial strain gives rise to a statistical shift of the muon population at interstitial sites. The effect of the population shift is found to be primarily responsible for the observed changes in the muon-precession frequency. The theory also predicts a 1T temperature dependence of the frequency shifts. Peer reviewed

Effect of zero-point motion on the superconducting transition temperature of PdH(D)

1984

Using self-consistent density functional formalism we show that the electronic structure of PdH(D) is influenced by the zero-point vibration of hydrogen and deuterium. This quantum effect makes a small but significant contribution to the superconducting transition temperature ${T}_{c}$ of PdH(D). The reverse isotope effect on ${T}_{c}$ is found to be dominated by the changes in the force constants between PdH and PdD.

The basic structural lesion of persistent neonatal hypoglycaemia with hyperinsulinism: deficiency of pancreatic D cells or hyperactivity of B cells?

1984

Pancreatic tissue obtained at subtotal pancreatectomy from 15 infants with persistent hypoglycaemia with hyperinsulinism, and autopsy specimens from 23 age-matched normoglycaemic controls, were studied with morphometric methods after immunocytochemical staining of the four main islet cell types (A, B, D and pancreatic polypeptide cells). In three cases, a focal lesion was detected by gross examination. Macroscopic or microscopic examination did not distinguish the 12 other cases from controls. As found previously, nesidioblastosis was not a specific feature of the pancreas in infantile hypoglycaemia, being observed in age-matched controls as well. In cases with hypoglycaemia the volume dens…

These alcohols were characterized by analytical and spectroscopic methods. The reaction sequences, starting with the esterification of the oligo[(hydroxyphenylene) methylene]s 11a – 11e with acryloyl chloride followed by the formation of the ladder oligomers and ending with their reduction and hydrolysis into the oligo(allyl alcohol)s and the starting compounds 11a – 11e, represent a simple matrix reaction. The electronic substituent influence on the thermally allowed electrocyclic interconversion cyclobutene/butadiene. A MNDO study

1984

The effects of donor/acceptor substitution on the conrotatory cyclobutene/butadiene interconversion have not yet been experimentally studied. MNDO Synchronous Transit/MINIMAX calculations for all possible combinations of NH2/NH3 + 3 groups at the fissile single bond reveal very large substituent effects on the opening reactions and reverse cyclisations. Diamino(1b/2b), diammonio-(1c/2c) and amino-ammonio-substitutions (1d/2d) change the activation energy of the reference ring opening reaction (1a →2a) from 49.9 kcal/mol to 34.7, 29.8 and 26.0 kcal/mol, respectively. This rate enhancement parallels the monotone shift of the transition state pathcoordinate towards the cyclobutenes. Relative t…

A theory of spatial general equilibrium in a fuzzy economy

1984

Let an economic space be characterized by the existence of a given distribution of locations, i.e. consumers' residential locations and producers' plants. It is equipped with a system of prices. The economy is fuzzy because the economic behaviors of agents are imprecise. In this context, spatial partial equilibria theories are applications of a fuzzy economic calculation model. The aim of the present paper is to study the conditions which must be fulfilled in order that the compatibility of consumers' equilibria and producers' equilibria be verified. Mathematical tools are Butnariu's theorems which extend the Brouwer's and Kakutani's theorems to the cases of fuzzy functions and fuzzy point-…

A secondary mode of action of the herbicide lenacil: Modification of K+ permeability of Acer pseudoplatanus cells

1984

Abstract The action of lenacil on plasmalemma permeability to K+, transmembrane electric potential difference (PD) calculated from the tetraphenylphosphonium distribution, proton extrusion and intracellular pH of Acer pseudoplatanus cells calculated from the 5,5-dimethyloxazolidine,4-dione distribution, was studied and compared with the action of fusicoccin (FC) and diethylstilbestrol (DES). The three compounds temporarily stimulated the rate of 86Rb+ uptake with a half-maximum effect at 5.0 μM for 3-cyclohexyl-6, 7-dihdro-1H-cyclopentapyrimidine-2,4(3H,5H)-dione (lenacil). No Correlation of Pineal "Synaptic" Ribbon Numbers and Melatonin Formation in Individual Rat Pineal Glands

1984

As previous circadian studies of pineal "synaptic" ribbon numbers and melatonin formation suggested that a positive correlation of the two variables exists, in the present investigation this problem was examined in individual pineal glands of rats killed at 1200 h and 2400 h, respectively. For this purpose, one half of the gland was processed for electron microscopy and the ribbons were counted in an area of 20,000 micron2 tissue; in the other half serotonin N-acetyltransferase (NAT) activity and melatonin content were determined. No correlation was found to exist between ribbon numbers and pineal NAT activity, pineal melatonin levels and serum melatonin levels, either at day- or at nightti…

The endocrine pattern of late onset adrenal hyperplasia (21-hydroxylase deficiency)

1984

We describe 5 adult women with severe hirsutism due to late onset 21-hydroxylase deficiency. Diagnosis was performed on the finding of high serum 17-hydroxyprogesterone (17OHP) levels with a marked hyperresponse to an ACTH test. The endocrine study showed in most patients a gonadotropin behavior similar to that observed in classical polycystic ovary (PCO) syndrome. Prolactin levels were slightly increased in basal conditions and presented an exaggerated response to TRH stimulation.

β− Strength function phenomena of exotic nuclei: A critical examination of the significance of nuclear model predictions

1984

Abstract Reliable predictions of β-decay properties of nuclei far from stability require knowledge of the β-strength distribution, S β ( E ). By comparison of experimental strength functions of neutron-rich Rb isotopes in the transitional region around A = 100 with S β ( E ) from different nuclear models, the sensitivity and physical significance of S β ( E ) on various integral and spectral β-decay properties are examined. The reliability of extrapolations and the applicability to different fields in nuclear physics, astrophysics and reactor technology are discussed. It is shown that, although there has been considerable progress in the physical understanding of the decay properties of nuc…
