Porous structure of highly crosslinked styrene‐divinylbenzene copolymers

Porous structure of two series of styrene (S)‐divinylbenzene (DVB) copolymers has been studied. The copolymers were prepared by suspension copolymerization of the monomers (50 wt.‐% of DVB) in the presence of heptane‐toluene mixtures as inert diluents. The fraction of diluents in the polymerization system or heptane: toluene ratio was changed. Both the pore volume and specific surface area increase as does dilution or the fraction of heptane in diluents, but the measured values change depending on sample pretreatment. A mechanism of structure built up is discussed and the porosity changes explained in terms of a microsyneresis of inhomogeneous S‐DVB copolymer gel.

W artykule omówiono jeden z podstawowych sposobów analizy i prezentacji preferencji przestrzennych ludzi w badaniach geograficznych, jakim są tzw. mapy mentalne. Pojęcie to generalnie odnoszące się do obrazu przestrzeni geograficznej w świadomości człowieka, jest w literaturze rozumiane i stosowane wieloznacznie, co między innymi starano się przedstawić w artykule. Wśród innych przykładów zaprezentowano też mapy tego typu, opracowane dla obszaru Polski, będące wyrazem preferencji przestrzennych grup ludzi, reprezentujących różne regiony naszego kraju.

Intense source of slow positrons from pulsed electron accelerators

A pulsed LINAC is used for pair production in a tantalum target of 2.5 radiation lengths in an energy range from 80 to 260 MeV. Several well-annealed tungsten vanes are placed immediately behind the target and thermalize a small fraction of the fast positrons. The slow positrons are extracted from the target region and magnetically guided over a distance of 17 m to the detector at the end of an S-shaped solenoid. Two Nal detectors with well-known detection efficiency are used to register the 511 keV annihilationγ-rays. To reduce pile-up effects 50 mm of Pb were placed in front of the detectors. Die Entwicklung zementlos fixierbarer Endoprothesen in der Orthopadie und die Verbesserung der Langzeitprognose dentaler Implantate hat zu einer Vielzahl neuer Implantatwerkstoffe gefuhrt. In einer parallelen tierxperimentellen Untersuchung konnte an einer durch Plasmaflamebeschichtung Oberflachenrauhen Titanmodifikation ebenso wie an einer Glaskeramik mit poroser Oberflachenstruktur nach 8 Wochen im Kaninchenfemur inniger Knochenkontakt nachgewiesen werden. An Explantaten belasteter IMZ-Implantate aus gleichem Titan wegen gingivaler Entzundung haben wir auch beim Menschen einen innigen Implantat-Knochen-Kontakt ohne bindegewebige Trennschicht nachweisen konnen (Abb. 1).

Beams of pp atoms flighting in vacuum with adjustable velocity have been proposed to study the spectroscopy of protonium atoms with high energy resolution (Ae/E down to 10-5) by using differential absorber foils and conventional X-ray detectors for emission spectroscopy and fixed frequency high power radiation sources for induced spectroscopy1. This aproach would lead to an improvement by more than two orders of magnitude versus the possibilities of “conventional” experiments in the field of protonium planned at LEAR2, and would give ways to measure with high accuracy effects of electromagnetic and strong interactions on the atomic levels of protonium.

A rapid and simple detection procedure of Aib-containing “peptaibol” polypeptide antibiotics (mycotoxins) in fungal culture broths is described which employs alkylsilica (Sep-Pak®) cartridges for a selective enrichment, and the utilization of the unusualα-aminoisobutyric acid (Aib) and amino alcohols as specific marker constituents, which are easily detectable in total hydrolysates. On the pallet, in the experiment ES 029 "Microorganisms and Biomolecules in Space Hard Environment" 316 dry samples of Bacillus subtilis spores will be exposed to space vacuum and/or selected wavelenghs of solar UV radiation. The appearance of collagen around individual fast twitch (FT) and slow twitch (ST) muscle fibres was investigated in skeletal muscles with different contractile properties using endurance trained and untrained rats as experimental animals. The collagenous connective tissue was analyzed by measuring hydroxyproline biochemically and by staining collagenous material histochemically in M. soleus (MS), M. rectus femoris (MRF), and M. gastrocnemius (MG). Textural, chemical and isotopic variations induced by hydrothermal fluids on mesozoic limestones in northwestern Sicily

The results are given of textural and compositional investigations carried out on carbonate materials outcropping in various localities in northwestern Sicily where fluorite, barite and calcite mineralizations of hydrothermal origin occur. Observation of the textural features indicate variations in the degree of calcite recrystallization and silicification that appear to be more marked in rocks that show more evident effects of mineralization. The geochemical behaviour of the minor elements indicate variations in chemical composition (increase of Mn, Fe, and Sr and removal of Mg) as a result of interactions between mineralizing fluids and host-rocks. Gas chromatography of homologous esters

Abstract The gas chromatographic retention behaviour of the butanoyl and 2-, 3- and 4-chlorobutanoyl esters of C 3 —C 5 saturated aliphatic branched-chain and unsaturated C 3 —C 6 alcohols on SE-30 and OV-351 glass capillary columns operated iso-thermally at several temperatures is reported. Retention index increments at 80, 120 and 160°C show the effects of chain branching and the olefinic and acetylenic unsaturation in the alkyl chain and the effect of the position of the chlorine substituent in the acyl chain. The results are compared with the behaviour of the corresponding n -alkyl esters and the chlorinated propanoyl esters.

Early deaths in acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL): results of the Italian Pediatric Cooperative Group for Therapy of Acute Leukemia (AIL-AIEOP).

In this retrospective multicentric study, we report on early deaths (ie, those that occurred during the first month of treatment) in a total of 943 newly diagnosed ALL pediatric patients registered from 1976 to 1981 at 21 centers of the AIL-AIEOP. Objectives of this study were as follows: (1) to verify the incidence and the cause of early death in a wide population of children with ALL and (2) to elucidate factors associated with early death and therefore to identify “high-risk” groups of patients. A mixture of all nine chlorinated 4-hydroxybenzaldehydes and the parent homologue was separated on a non-polar SE-30 capillary column using various isothermal and temperature-programmed operating conditions. The relative retention data for the compounds are given and the retention indices together with the retention index increments for each position of chlorine substitution are examined. Use of chlorophyll fluorescence induction kinetics to study translocation and detoxication of DCMU-type herbicides in plant leaves

Transient levels of the fluorescence induction rise were used to quantify partial photosynthesis inhibition by DCMU -type herbicides in whole leaves. Assays in different crop or weed species showed a good accuracy in measurements (generally, variation was lower than 5%). This technique was applied to the problem of varietal selectivity of wheat towards chlortoluron.

Several studies have pointed towards an increased sensitivity of platelets to ADP induced aggregation (3, 6, 23) in diabetic patients; this phenomenon can also be found in diabetics without apparent vasculopathy and in subjects with altered glucose tolerance (3, 23).

A study of the diels-alder reaction of 3-oxabicyclo[3.3.0]oct-1(5)-ene-2,4-dione with cyclopentadiene and some related dienes

Abstract The reaction of 3-oxabicyclo[3.3.0]oct-l(5)ene-2,4-dione, 2, with cyclopentadiene, 3, 5,5-diethoxycyclopentadiene, 4, and 6,6-dimethylfulvene, 5, is studied. Reaction of 2 and 3 yields the expected endo-adduct, while reaction of 2 and 5 gives a mixture of the endo- and exo-adducts whose ratio is slightly dependent on the reaction conditions. Attractive electrostatic interactions in the transition state leading to the exo-adduct can explain the absence of endo stereoselectivity in the last reaction. Steric factors seem to be responsible for the absence of reaction between 2 and 4. The analysis of the 13C NMR spectra of these adducts and some derived compounds confirms the tentative …
