Isolated rat hearts with the right sympathetic nerves attached were perfused at a constant flow rate of 7 ml/min with Tyrode's solution. (-)-3H-Noradrenaline (final concentration 10–13.9 nM) was infused for 10 min to label the noradrenaline stores. After wash-out the sympathetic nerves were stimulated electrically (3 Hz, 180 impulses, 1 ms, 20–30 mA) three times (S1–S3) at intervals of 15 min. 3H-Noradrenaline and its metabolites were determined by liquid scintillation counting according to Graefe et al. The Raman spectrum of the hexagonal high pressure phase of polyethylene was measured at 5.2 kbar and 240 °C, using a hydrostatic high pressure cell. The spectrum is largely identical to that obtained for the melt. This result indicates that the conformational short range order in the hexagonal phase remains melt —like and is not modified by the overall straightening of chains.

Abstract The interaction of dipyridamole with α1-acid glycoprotein was investigated by circular dichroism and ultraviolet absorbance measurements as well as by equilibrium dialysis experiments. Dipyridamole is bound to the protein via one site of extremely high affinity and by at least one site of considerably lower affinity. Only the association of dipyridamole with the high affinity site produces typical extrinsic Cotton effects. As a result of experimental observations it is concluded that the high affinity site is located in a hydrophobic protein structure of the glycoprotein.

The combined effects of two chlorine substituents and the non-additivities of chemical shifts in aliphatic dichloro esters

Carbon-13 NMR spectra were measured for 25 methyl esters of aliphatic dichlorocarboxylic acids for substituted propanoic to hexanoic acids. Observed 13C shifts are compared with calculated shift values obtained from the shifts of the corresponding monochloro esters by applying a simple sum method. The greatest failures from additivity are observed for αβ and αα substituted carbons. The combined effects of two chlorine substituents were determined, and compared with those obtained from chlorine substituent effects in monochloro esters by assuming additivity. The trends displayed by the combined effects, and also by the non-additivity effects, are discussed.

1. Segments of the guinea-pig ileum were incubated in Tyrode's solution containing 3 μM propranolol. Dopamine, like noradrenaline and clonidine, inhibited the twitch response to field stimulation. The inhibitory action of dopamine remained unchanged in the presence of the dopamine uptake inhibitor nomifensine (1 μM). Tissue from reserpine-pretreated amimals was insensitive to tyramine but the response to dopamine was not affected. In a study of the effect of pinealectomy on thyroid C-cell number, 8 animals out of 66 were found to have thymic tissue in close association with the thyroid. Cells containing immunoreactive calcitonin were found in all of the thyroids but in only one of the 8 pieces of thymus. Transrenal ureteral occlusion using a detachable balloon was successfully employed to stop urinary flow in seven patients. The balloon was filled with low-viscosity silicone rubber and released in the distal ureter. Percutaneous nephrostomy provided external drainage. Indications were painful dysuria and large urinary fistulas in advanced pelvic malignancy. The method is preferable to ureteral embolization with tissue adhesive.

Optimal growth rates were observed with normal sea water salinity and low light conditions at pH 7.0. Estimation of pulmonary arterial pressure by measuring the size of the right pulmonary artery in the suprasternal echocardiogram.

We studied 175 patients within 24 hr before cardiac catheterization with suprasternal echocardiography to evaluate whether pulmonary arterial hypertension can be derived by measuring the size of the right pulmonary artery. Group I consisted of 103 patients without pulmonary arterial hypertension (enddiastolic less than or equal to 12 mm Hg; mean pressure less than 20 mm Hg) and group II consisted of 72 patients with pulmonary arterial hypertension. The right pulmonary artery could be imaged in 91.2% of the patients studied.
