Abstract C1q, the Fc recognizing subcomponent of the first complement component was shown to be synthesized by peritoneal macrophages. Evidence is presented that C1q serves during the secretion phase as Fc binding protein on the membrane of these macrophages. A dose-dependent inhibition of Fc rosette formation occured when the macrophages were pretreated with anti-C1q -F(ab') 2 . The C3b rosette formation was not affected. In addition, preincubation of peritoneal macrophages with anti-C1q -F(ab') 2 abolished specifically the polyanion mediated stimulation to secrete dose and time dependently lysosomal enzymes. Extensional flow of HDPE/LDPE blends

Elongational viscosity data, obtained through the converging flow analysis by Cogswell, are presented for two types of HDPE/LDPE blends at various compositions and different temperatures. The results relative to the homopolymer parents compare favourably with literature data obtained also with different and more sophisticated techniques. Those relative to blends show peculiar features for the two cases: when the newtonian viscosity of the LDPE is higher all the blends show a behaviour typical of the LDPE with a maximum in η el /η0 enhanced at small percentage of HDPE; when the newtonian viscosity of the LDPE is similar to that of the HDPE there is only a gradual change in the properties.

It is simply not possible to test all chemicals in adequately performed whole animal carcinogenicity tests. Short-term tests are, therefore, frequently used as a substitute. None of these short-term tests give results which correspond in all cases to the results obtained in whole animal carcinogenicity tests. Certain short-term tests have a notoriously poor predictibility for whole animal carcinogenicity for certain classes of chemicals. Therefore, if a chemical, whose carcinogenicity is unknown, is tested in a short-term test, frequently related compounds of known carcinogenicity are also tested simultaneously as chemical class controls.

Publisher Summary This chapter discusses a study to analyze the effect of 4-aminopyridine (4AP) administration on cortical acetylcholine (ACh) output. The study was done on adult male Wistar rats under urethane or pentobarbital anesthesia. A small Perspex cylinder filled with eserinized Ringer solution was applied on the exposed cerebral cortex. The solution in the collecting cylinder was removed every 10 min and its ACh content was determined by bioassay on the dorsal muscle of the leech. Using a time-dependent generator-coordinate method, we derive a theory for time-dependent collective ground-state correlations which account for some quantum fluctuations about a TDHF trajectory. This theory is particularly suited for evaluating spreading widths of collective one-body operators. As an application we study head-on collision of heavy ions in a one-dimensional model. As one of the prominent results we find a substantial enhancement of the spreading width of the internal excitation energy due to the correlations.

In these systems magnetic ordering occurs via the polarization of the ground state, and noticeable dispersion of well defined excitations is expected in systems where the exchange coupling is about equal to the crystal field energy. In addition, the two singlet-triplet systems PrSbl and TbP2 where single crystals are available and which have been studied in detail showed a pronounced splitting of the Г1–Г4 magnetic excitations where the triple degeneracy was lifted along [100] and [011] by a strong anisotropy of the exchange.

An experiment was conducted in which injection of KA, a neurotoxic drug analog of glutamate, was made into the entopeduncolar nucleus (EN), the equivalent of the medial globus pallidus of primates, to observe the modifications produced on the spontaneous amygdaloid bioelectric activity and on the evoked AD. Die Bemuhungen um die experimentelle Erzeugung von Ovarialtumoren im Versuchstier erbrachten seit Zondek’s Entdeckung (zitiert nach Biskind u. Biskind 1944) des Ostrogenabbaus in der Leber (1934) zahlreiche Modelle fur die funktionellen Granulosazelltumoren des Eierstocks. Fur das bei der Frau wesentlich haufigere und bedeutungsvollere Karzinom in seinen verschiedenen Formen fanden sich dagegen bisher nur vereinzelte Modelle, die meist unreproduziert blieben und fur die Prufung neuer Wege in der Therapie oder die Aufdeckung pathogenetischer Prinzipien in groserem Mas nicht genutzt werden.

Method for determination of formaldehyde in air in the pptv-range by HPLC after extraction as 2,4-dinitrophenyl-hydrazone

The derivatization of formaldehyde with 2,4-dinitrophenylhydrazine and the extraction of the product formalhydrazone is studied. The determination is carried out by HPLC. Applying a cryogenic sampling technique and a sampling volume of 300l of air the detection limit of formaldehyde in air is 30 pptv and this is suitable for measurements of formaldehyde in the atmosphere. The outcome of Wilms' tumor in infants. Italy 1970-79.

Thirty-four infants under 1 year of age with Wilms’ tumor were diagnosed and treated in 14 Italian pediatric oncology units during 1970-79. The 3-year survival rates decreased with higher group unilateral tumors: 95% in group I Wilms’ tumor, 75% in group II and 20% in group III. The survival rates for children with group I and II Wilms’ tumor were similar for those who were treated with surgery and chemotherapy and those who also received postoperative radiotherapy. During 1975-79 fewer patients with group I Wilms’ tumor received radiotherapy (1 of 11) than during 1970-74 (4 of 6, p < 0.05). All these children are alive at this writing.
