Local Finite Group Theory

The word local is used in finite group-theory in relation to a fixed prime p; thus properties of p-subgroups or their normalisers, for example, are regarded as local. In the case of a soluble group, then, everything is local, but an insoluble group also has global aspects. Now the local behaviour influences the global, that is, there are theorems in which the hypothesis involves only p-subgroups and their normalisers, but the conclusion involves the whole group. This chapter is an introduction to theorems of this sort.

A Synthetic Approach to Multivariate Normal Clustering

Two methods have been suggested for grouping together observations originated from the same multivariate normal distributions, both based on a maximum-likelihood (ML) estimation, but leading to different conclusions. In this paper we compare the use of Day’s approach and that of Scott and Symons in clustering procedures from the theoretical and computational point of view. Based on this comparison, we suggest an approach unifying those approaches. The workability of the approach will be verified by numerical experiments.

Abstract The maximum sorption capacity of n-butylamine (A + n-but ), the exchange capacity of HTO (A HTO ) and the acid strength distribution (ASD) - titration of n-butylamine using arylmethanols as indicators - were measured for a series of commercial active aluminas. A + n-but was formally regarded as total acidity and was found to be larger than A HTO , the latter representing a measure of the Broensted acidity. We have shown that Pseudomonas aeruginosa ATCC 27853 and other clinical isolates of this species can induce granulocyte migration, either directly or via generation of chemotactic activity in serum [1].

Samples of some thermal springs from Sicily have been analysed for the isotopic composition of sulphur-bearing species. The values of δ34S(SO42− (range: +7.3, +31.7‰), δ34S(H2S) (range: −12.2, +27.8), δ34S(S°) (range: +1.9, +24.5) and δ18O(SO42−) (range: −2.5, +23.9) obtained show such a remarkable variability in data as to hypothesize different genetic processes concerning these species. Mit einem ausPseudomonas luorescens isoliertend-Malat-Enzym (d(+)-Malat: NAD Oxidoreduktase, decarboxylierend), dasd-Malat spezifisch zu Pyruvat decarboxyliert, wobei NADH entsteht, wurde eine Analysenmethode entwickelt, die es ermoglicht, 20 bis 200 mgd-Malat je Liter in Fruchtsaften zu bestimmen.
