Influence of artificial blood contamination of the analysis of cerebrospinal fluid

1981

The influence of artificial blood contamination on the quantitative values obtained in the routine examination of the CSF was investigated. On the basis of dilution series from CSF and blood, the correlation between the number of added erythrocytes and the results of leukocyte counts, protein, glucose and IgG estimation was studied. In addition, the influence of the time between CSF sampling and investigation on erythrocytes and leukocytes, IgG, glucose, pH value and ammonia content in CSF contaminated with blood was investigated. The following data relevant to routine examinations resulted: there are linear correlations between the number of erythrocytes artificially added to the CSF and t…

The proton spin-lattice relaxation time T1 was determined at 13,8, 55,2, and 90 MHz in polystyrene (PS-d0) and polystyrene deuterated at the chain (PS-d3) and the phenyl groups (PS-d5), respectively, at temperatures between −130 and +230°C. Furthermore, T1 was measured in isotopic mixtures of PS-d3 and fully deuterated PS-d8 where a separation into intramolecular and intermolecular contributions was possible through the deuteron dilution technique. Above 130°C, various distributions of correlation times provide a semiquantitative understanding of the different motins seen by the protons of the partially deuterated systems. Randomized clinical study on intratumoral BCG-cell wall preparation (CWP) therapy in patients with squamous cell carcinoma in the head and neck region

1981

Based on animal experiments a clinical study with BCG cell wall preparation (CWP) was developed. Patients with head and neck carcinomas stage T1/2N0–2M0 were randomized. One group received surgical treatment only and a second group received preoperative intralesional BCG-CWP. So far 12 patients have been included in each group. After 3 years the CCR (complete cancer remission) in the surgery only group was 39% and that in the preoperative BCG-CWP group, 69% (P=11%). The cumulative proportion of surviving patients was 50% in the surgery only and 73% in the BCG-CWP group (P=21%). BCG-CWP injection was followed by an increase in body temperature and a decrease in peripheral blood lymphocytes. …

Inhibition of molybdenum blue formation by ATP.

1981

Molybdenum blue formation was not affected by the presence of ATP up to a concentration of 1.2 muM/l. At higher concentrations the color development was inhibited relative to ATP concentration, finally reaching complete inhibition. Auto-hydrolysis of ATP was found at a rate of 1.4%/h. An exact determination of inorganic phosphate in the presence of easily hydrolyzed phosphate esters requires the measurement of extinction at fixed time intervals and extrapolation back to time zero.

Effects of wave function correlations on scaling violation in quasi-free electron scattering

1981

Abstract The scaling law in quasi-free electron scattering is broken due to the existence of exchange forces, leading to a finite mean value of the scaling variable y . This effect is considerably increased by wave function correlations, in particular by tensor correlations, similar to the case of the photonuclear enhancement factor κ.

Instabilities of the deformation process in cold drawing of poly(ethylene terephthalate) and other polymers

1981

The relationship between drawing rate and drawing stress was studied for amorphous poly(ethylene terephthalate) (PET) under various experimental conditions. Three types of expriments were performed: simple drawing with necking at constant rate, drawing through a conical die, and drawing at constant stress. Under constant stress conditions a transition between two stable regimes of drawing can be observed. The transition occurs at a critical stress σc at which the rate of neck propagation changes by some orders of magnitude. Such a transition was found both below and above the glass transition of PET. With constant drawing rates instabilities of neck propagation were observed under certain e…

Effect of potential antidotes on the acute toxicity of acrylonitrile

1981

Rats were intoxicated with lethal doses of acrylonitrile by different routes of application, and the effect of potential antidotes was studied. The cyanide antidotes 4-dimethylaminophenol plus thiosulfate showed some protective effect only after oral but not after i.p. or inhalatory acrylonitrile application. Of the sulfhydryl compounds cysteine, N-acetylcysteine, cysteamine and diethyldithiocarbamate the two antidotes cysteine and, to some lesser extent, N-acetylcysteine proved especially effective. Cysteine, at a dose of 200 mg/kg (i.p.), prevented the lethal effect of 100 mg/kg acrylonitrile (i.p.) even when given 2 h after the acrylonitrile dose. From these experiments a tentative sched…

A comparison of cytoplasmic and nuclear estradiol and progesterone receptors in human fallopian tube and endometrial tissue

1981

Quantitative and qualitative aspects of the in vitro binding of 3 H-estradiol and 3 H-progesterone to receptor components from human endometrium and fallopian tube cytoplasmic and nuclear fractions were studied. The steroid binding macromolecules formed in vitro could be extracted from nuclei by 0.4M KCl and detected by glycerol gradient centrifugation. Both estradiol- and progesterone-binding compounds formed only one peak (under high ionic strength conditions) with a sedimentation coefficient of about 4-5S. The number of cytoplasmic and nuclear binding sites for both estradiol and R5020 varied dramatically throughout the menstrual cycle: the estradiol and progesterone receptor concentrati…

Polymer ester von sären des phosphors, 7. Polymerisation des 1-oxo-2,6,7-trioxa-1-phosphabicyclo[2.2.1]heptans

1981

1-Oxo-2,6,7-trioxa-1-phosphabicyclo[2.2.1]heptane is transformed in situ (prepared from trimethyl phosphite and glycerol) at −78°C in the presence of a trace of water into a crosslinked polymer containing constitutional repeating units with 5- and 6-membered rings. The reaction with reagents containing hydroxyl groups (water, acetic acid, alcohol) leads to the degradation of the network with the formation of soluble fragments with Pn = 35–50. This reactivity and the possibility to obtain other derivatives from the fragments make this polymer a carrier for pharmacologically active polymers with the advantage of decomposing only into the innocuous components phosphoric acid and glycerol.

Assessment and optimization of system parameters in size exclusion separation of proteins on diol-modified silica columns

1981

Abstract On diol-modified silica columns the retention of proteins is governed by a size exclusion effect, but superimposed on this are some secondary effects, i.e. , ionic and diol-ligand interactions which can be controlled and adjusted reproducibly by varying the eluent composition. The eluent composition also affects the column efficiency and peak shape. Both dependences can be employed to obtain a better resolution of proteins than can be expected from size exclusion alone.

Beiträge zur polymerisation von 2-isopropenylnaphthalin, 3. Anionische homopolymerisation von 2-isopropenylnaphthalin

1981

The anionic homopolymerization of 2-isoprenylnaphthalene with butyllithium in tetrahydrofuran at –78°C is described. The refractive index increment amounts to dn/dc = 0,2084 ml/g for these polymers in toluene at 25°C and wavelength λ = 436 nm. Determination of the molecular weights by light scattering yielded values between 13 000 and 270 000. The second virial coefficients also determined by light scattering measurements are comparable with the corresponding data of poly(α-methylstyrene). A calibration curve is given for gel permeation chromatography of the poly(2-isoprenylnaphthalene)s, whose polymolecularity indexes Mw/Mn lie between 1,06 and 1,2. A quantitative electron-microscopic study of a linear polyethylene fraction crystallized at different temperatures

1981

Replica and thin-section electron microscopy was performed on a linear polyethylene fraction (Mw = 1.89 × 105, Mn = 1.79 × 10 5) which was either isothermally crystallized or quenched at difference temperatures. The results are numerically analyzed in such a manner so as to give the distribution of the total long spacing and of the crystallite and amorphous thicknesses. The quantitative information about the maximum and minimum values for these parameters at each crystallization temperature yields important clues as to possible molecular processes involved. Qualitative information regarding general morphology, molecular tilt with respect to the lamellar surface, and possible crystallographi…

Description of a Simple, Specific, and Sensitive Test for the Detection of Detergent-Solubilized C3b Receptor

1981

Abstract The C3b receptor was isolated from detergent-solubilized human erythrocyte membranes by a previously described technique (1). The receptor glycoprotein was shown to enhance EAC14oxy23b rosette formation with Raji lymphoblastoid cells. This provided a specific and sensitive test to detect the solubilized C3b receptor either in crude or highly purified form. The property of the C3b receptor tested by this assay appears to be analogous to properties of β1H.

2-hydroxyethylierung von oligo(iminoethylen)en und deren überführung in oligo-[N-(2-chloroethyl)iminoethylen]e

1981

Oligo[N-(2-chloroethyl)iminoethylene]s (8) were synthesized as potential antitumor agents like their low molecular weight analogues. It was found that oligo(iminoethylene)s (5) can be 2-hydroxyethylated with ethylene oxide and subsequently transformed into oligo[N-(2-chloroethyl)iminoethylene hydrochloride]s (14) with thionyl chloride. The stability of the free oligomers 8 was found to decrease with the number of N-2-chloroethyl groups in the molecule.

Mannosyl transferases inSaccharomyces cerevisiae: Evidence for the occurrence of ectomannosyltransferase activity

1981

The subcellular distribution of mannosyltransferases inSaccharomyces cerevisiae was studied following the separation of the plasma membrane from other intracellular membranous systems. Most of the activity was linked to internal membranes, and the rest was located at the level of the plasma membrane. Yeast plasma membranes coated on their external face with concanavalin A when incubated with GDP-[U-14C]mannose incorporated 20% less [U-14C]mannose in glycoproteins and 110% more in glycolipids than plasma membranes alone. This suggested that part of the total mannosyltransferase activity of the plasma membrane is located on its outer surface. A significant incorporation of radioactive mannose…

Sources of human plasma cyclic AMP. Examinations before and after beta 2 adrenergic stimulation.

1981

Plasma cyclic AMP was measured in different vessels in seventeen volunteers before and after stimulation with terbutaline. Differences between arterial blood and blood from the hepatic vein, right ventricle, inferior vena cava and a cubital vein could not be demonstrated. Only in the renal vein was the concentration of cyclic AMP decreased. Our results indicate that cyclic AMP is not generated from any specific isolated organ and that changes in cyclic AMP after subcutaneous injection of terbutaline reflect a general influence of this drug.

Multiple linear regression analysis of RF values of chlorinated catechols and guaiacols

1981

The multiple linear regression analysis of the RF values of chlorinated catechols and guaiacols has been carried out. The resolved terms, in the regression equation have been used to explain the relative mobility of chlorinated compounds to the reference compound (catechol or guaiacol). The best correlations have been observed for solvent systems which give the greatest standard deviations and relative differences between the RF values. A good correlation between the standard deviation of the RF values and the term which represents the effect of the chlorine atom ortho to the hydroxyl group(s) have also been observed.

Analysis of pattern recognition by man using detection experiments.

1981

This paper addresses the problem of analyzing biological pattern recognition systems. As no complete analysis is possible due to limited observability, the theoretical part of the paper examines some principles of construction for recognition systems. The relations between measurable and characteristic variables of these systems are described. The results of the study are: 1. Human recognition systems can always be described by a model consisting of an analyzer (FA) and a linear classifier. 2. The linearity of the classifier places no limits on the universal validity of the model. The principle of organization of such a system may be put into effect in many different ways. 3. The analyzer f…

Measurement of the positron longitudinal polarization in muon decay

1981

The longitudinal polarization of the ${e}^{+}$ from ${\ensuremath{\mu}}^{+}$ decay has been measured. The spin dependence of positron-electron (Bhabha) scattering and of annihilation in flight were used as the analyzing reactions. The combined statistical and systematic error was reduced by a factor of approximately 3 below that of any previous measurement. The longitudinal polarization was found to be 1.010\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}0.064 (statistical plus systematic error) and to be consistent with the prediction of the $V\ensuremath{-}A$ interaction.
