Mind, brain and altered states of consciousness

2018

The consciousness is the expression of an enormous and complex variety of neurobiological events, phenomenological and psychological that, from the early stages of development, prepare the emergence soil of the Self. It is a complex of tangible and intan- gible characters distinct from one another - neural infrastructure, awareness, temporality, qualitative subjectivity, intentionality - to such an extent as to seem welded faces of the same prism. Consciousness is not a simple function of the mind, but its organization. In this paper we intend to show how its order is not strictly hierarchical, but sustained by multiple horizontal levels, each of which in a structural and functional continu…

The access to labor rights of victims of gender based violence calls for the accreditation of the violent situation though legally established means.

2018

The article is a synthetic essay that exposes the main theoretical lines of the postmarxist approach of Laclau and Mouffe, on the one hand, and the autonomist post-operaism of Negri, Hardt, Virno, etc., on the other hand. These theories are conceived as attempts to rationalize current political bets by various political sectors and social movements. It analyzes both argumentative strategies from «orthodox» Marxism and the structure / superstructure relationship; and the forms of constitution of new subjectivities. It compares the theoretical fundamentals of hegemonic articulations and counter-power experiences. It discusses, likewise, the scope and limitations of the categories of «people» …

International Exchanges in a Globalized World

2018

A reality today is that the economy, characterized by the expansion and development of financial mechanisms, cannot be conceived without the stock exchange: the real economy is reflected in the trend of stock, and, in turn, the stock can influence – good or bad – the economic life. Thus, by the rise of globalization, as instruments of capital accumulation, stock exchange has become the most effective way of targeting the capital available in the economy to the most profitable use. The market will determine which companies will be funded and what is the cost of their capital. The decisive factor is the efficiency with which companies use this capital. In this way, international stock markets…

Visualization of Parameter Sensitivity of 2D Time-Dependent Flow

2018

In this paper, we present an approach to analyze 1D parameter spaces of time-dependent flow simulation ensembles. By extending the concept of the finite-time Lyapunov exponent to the ensemble domain, i.e., to the parameter that gives rise to the ensemble, we obtain a tool for quantitative analysis of parameter sensitivity both in space and time. We exemplify our approach using 2D synthetic examples and computational fluid dynamics ensembles.

Transforming Tradition: Richard Courant in Göttingen

2018

Richard Courant had a knack for being at the right place at the right time. He came to Gottingen in 1907, just when Hilbert and Minkowski were delving into fast-breaking developments in electron theory. There he joined three other students who also came from Breslau: Otto Toeplitz, Ernst Hellinger, and Max Born, all three, like him, from a German Jewish background. Toeplitz was their natural intellectual leader, in part because his father was an Oberlehrer at the Breslau Gymnasium (Muller-Stach 2014). Courant was five or six years younger than the others; he was sociable and ambitious, but also far poorer than they (Reid 1976, 8–13).

Stabilization of unilamellar catanionic vesicles induced by β-cyclodextrins: A strategy for a tunable drug delivery depot.

2018

The limited stability of catanionic vesicles has discouraged their wide use for encapsulation and controlled release of active substances. Their structure can easily break down to form lamellar phases, micelles or rearrange into multilamellar vesicles, as a consequence of small changes in their composition. However, despite the limited stability, catanionic vesicles possess an attractive architecture, which is able to efficiently encapsulate both hydrophobic and hydrophilic molecules. Therefore, improving the stability of the vesicles, as well as the control on unilamellar structures, are prerequisites for their wider application range. This study focuses on the impact of β-cyclodextrins fo…

Biological investigation of neural circuits in the insect brain

2018

Watching insects thoughtfully one cannot but adore their behavioural capabilities. They have developed amazing reproductive, foraging and orientation strategies and at the same time they followed the evolutionary path of miniaturization and sparseness. Both features together turn them into a role model for autonomous robots. Despite their tiny brains, fruit flies (Drosophila) can orient, walk on uneven terrain, in any orientation to gravity, can fly in adverse winds, find partners, places for egg laying, food and shelter. Drosophila melanogaster is the model animal for geneticists and cutting-edge tools are being continuously developed to study the underpinnings of their behavioural capabil…

2018

16 pages; International audience; Continental environments are very sensitive to climatic variations. A unique opportunity to study the climate changes around the Oligocene/Miocene boundary is offered by the Limagne graben Basin (France) where this stage boundary is well constrained by fossils. Indeed, some localities of the Limagne Graben Basin are so rich in mammal remains that they have become a European reference for mammal biostratigraphy. The dominant sedimentary facies of the lacustrine deposits in the northern part of the Limagne Graben Basin are composed of poorly cemented marls and calcarenites containing various plants and animals remains (e.g. algae, fish bones and teeth, gastro…

The role of utility models in patent filing strategies: evidence from European countries

2018

We examine the role of utility models (UM) in patent filing strategies. With an extensive patent family data from European countries, we explore the structures and characteristics of patent families, which include UMs. A simple typology of patent families with UM members is introduced. We document that the geographical scope of most patent families with UM members is purely national, which is in line with the conventional view that the UM mechanism covers technologically and economically marginal inventions. However, the image of a UM as a signal of a minor invention is an oversimplification. Applicants exhibit a mixture of uses for the UM and there exists a subset of UM filings linked to i…

IL-25 dampens the growth of human germinal center-derived B-cell non Hodgkin Lymphoma by curtailing neoangiogenesis

2018

Interleukin (IL)-25, a member of the IL-17 cytokine superfamily, is produced by immune and non-immune cells and exerts type 2 pro-inflammatory effects in vitro and in vivo. The IL-25 receptor(R) is composed of the IL-17RA/IL-17RB subunits. Previous work showed that germinal centre (GC)-derived B-cell non Hodgkin lymphomas (B-NHL) expressed IL-17AR, formed by IL-17RA and IL-17RC subunits, and IL-17A/IL-17AR axis promoted B-NHL growth by stimulating neoangiogenesis. Here, we have investigated expression and function of IL-25/IL-25R axis in lymph nodes from human GC-derived B-NHL, i.e. Follicular Lymphoma (FL,10 cases), Diffuse Large B Cell Lymphoma (6 cases) and Burkitt Lymphoma (3 cases). Hyperbaric Storage of Fruit Juice and Impact on Composition

2018

International audience; One of the main parameters affecting fruit juice preservation is the temperature over storage. Spoilage is further delayed by reducing the temperature, which although valuable, leads to high energy costs. Recently, hyperbaric storage has appeared as an alternative preservation methodology by a microbial growth inhibition similarly to refrigeration storage, showing great potential for energy savings, as well as carbon footprint reduction, as it could be applied at room temperature. Recent publications revealed the possibility to preserve fruit juice under pressure at variable/uncontrolled room temperature, meaning that energy is only required in the compression/decomp…

Invasives Karzinom der Vagina

2018

2018

A new copper(I) coordination polymer [Cu6(μ3-I)6(μ3-PTAO)2]n (1) was prepared from copper(I) iodide and 1,3,5-triaza-7-phosphaadamantane-7-oxide (PTAO). The crystal structure of 1 reveals an intricate 2D coordination network constructed from the hexacopper(I)-iodide [Cu6(μ3-I)6] cluster units with the 4M6-1 topology interlinked by the μ3-PTAO spacers. An overall 2D layer network can be simplified to a binodal 3,6-connected net with the kgd topology. A derived 1@paper material was prepared by impregnating compound 1 onto a filter paper. Detailed investigation of the luminescence properties for 1 and 1@paper in the solid state revealed a remarkable ability of both materials to sense aniline m…

Multiband light emission and nanoscale chemical analyses of carbonized fumed silica

2018

Fumed silica with a specific area of 295 m2/g was carbonized by successive phenyltrimethoxysilane treatments followed by annealing in inert atmosphere up to 650 °C. Emission, excitation, kinetics, and photo-induced bleaching effects were investigated by steady state and time-resolved photoluminescence spectroscopies. The local chemistry was also studied by infrared transmission spectroscopy. Strong ultraviolet and visible photoluminescence was observed in the samples after the chemical treatments/modifications and thermal annealing. It has been shown that ultraviolet photoluminescence in chemically modified fumed silica is associated with phenyl groups, while near ultraviolet and visible em…

Murdered women’s children: A social emergency and gloomy reality

2018

Femicide, defined as the killing of females by males because they are females, is be-coming recognized worldwide as an im-portant ongoing manifestation of gender inequality. Actual or imminent separation, abuser’s access to firearms, prior threats with a weapon, prior threats to kill the victim, a stepchild in the household, prob-lematic alcohol and illicit drug use, as well as mental health problems, are associated with a substantially higher risk of femi-cide. Little is known about the number of orphaned children who have instantane-ously lost both parents. Sparse attention has been focused on children whose moth-er was murdered: these are difficult cases for child psychiatry teams. Decis…

Abstract In the Mediterranean, the South-Tethys paleomargin experienced polyphased tectonic episodes and paleoenvironmental perturbations during Mesozoic time. The Cretaceous shallow-water carbonate successions of the Panormide platform, outcropping in the northern edge of the Palermo Mountains (NW Sicily), were studied by integrating facies and stratal pattern with backstripping analysis to recognize the tectonics vs. carbonate sedimentation interaction. The features of the Requienid limestone, including geometric configuration, facies sequence, lithological changes and significance of the top-unconformity, highlight that at the end of the Lower Cretaceous the carbonate platform was tecton…

2018

Analysis of the influence of the Treaty of Lisbon on the EU immigration reguiations with particular attention to the principle of solidarity and fair sharing of responsibility between Member States indicates that the Treaty of Lisbon extensively reformed these reguiations. Its premise and mechanisms should be assessed as justified. However, they give a lot ofleeway for interpretation and need to be supplemented with EU secondary law. Unfortunately, States are primarily driven by their interest when applying these rules which leads to their nonproductiveness. The recent migration crisis explicitly proves this. The reason for the above can be found, among other things, in attachment to classi…

Piękno w poezji chińskiej a poeci polscy

2018

The aim of the article is to present differences between the understanding of the concept of beauty in the Eastern and Western cultures. The author analyses creativity of the Polish poets who translated selected Chinese texts. She analyses also poetry that undertakes themes and motifs characteristic for Chinese poetry and connected with landscape, motifs of moon and grass. Representation of the elements of nature in the creativity of the Chinese classics is compared with works of Tadeusz Różewicz, Konstanty Ildefons Gałczyński, Julian Tuwim and Halina Poświatowska. Beauty, however differently defined in various cultures, often assumes similar forms.
