“I hate this part right here”: Embodied, subjective experiences of listening to aversive music

2021

Although the majority of previous research on music-induced responses has focused on pleasurable experiences and preferences, it is undeniable that music is capable of eliciting strong dislike and aversion as well. To date, only limited research has been carried out to understand the subjective experience of listening to aversive music. This qualitative study explored people’s negative experiences associated with music listening, with the aim to understand what kinds of emotions, affective states, and physical responses are associated with listening to aversive music. One hundred and two participants provided free descriptions of (1) musical features of aversive music; (2) subjective physi…

Spectroscopic analysis of vibronic relaxation pathways in molecular spin qubit [Ho(W5O18)2]9−: sparse spectra are key

2021

Molecular vibrations play a key role in magnetic relaxation processes of molecular spin qubits as they couple to spin states, leading to the loss of quantum information. Direct experimental determination of vibronic coupling is crucial to understand and control the spin dynamics of these nano-objects, which represent the limit of miniaturization for quantum devices. Herein, we measure the vibrational properties of the molecular spin qubit $[$Ho(W$_5$O$_{18}$)$_2]^{9-}$ by means of magneto-infrared spectroscopy. Our results allow us to unravel the vibrational decoherence pathways in combination with $ab$ $initio$ calculations including vibronic coupling. We observe field-induced spectral cha…

Toward a better understanding of fish‐based contribution to ocean carbon flux

2021

Fishes are the dominant vertebrates in the ocean, yet we know little of their contribution to carbon export flux at regional to global scales. We synthesize the existing information on fish-based carbon flux in coastal and pelagic waters, identify gaps and challenges in measuring this flux and approaches to address them, and recommend research priorities. Based on our synthesis of passive (fecal pellet sinking) and active (migratory) flux of fishes, we estimated that fishes contribute an average (± standard deviation) of about 16.1% (± 13%) to total carbon flux out of the euphotic zone. Using the mean value of model-generated global carbon flux estimates, this equates to an annual flux of 1…

Divergent Thinking in Older Adults : Understanding its Role in Well-being

2021

The purpose of the study was to explore the nature of the relationship between Divergent Thinking and Well-being. Two theoretical models about the relationship between Divergent thinking, Psychological well-being and Life Satisfaction were tested. A total of 152 subjects between 65 and 84 years old participated in the study. Final model emphasises the idea that PWB is affected by DT and that PWB is also significantly related to LS. The model also highlights the importance of four dimensions of well-being: environmental mastery, life purpose, personal growth and self-acceptance. The goodness-of-fit indexes confirmed the existence of a significant relationship between DT and well-being, and b…

Experiences of people with memory disorders and their spouse carers on influencing formal care: “They ask my wife questions that they should ask me”

2021

Background People with memory disorders often need care and help from family carers and health and social care providers. Due to the deterioration of cognitive capacity and language skills, they may be unable to convey their thoughts and care preferences to other people. As a result, their agency may become restricted. We investigated the descriptions provided by people with memory disorders and spousal carers of their influence on care in encounters with formal care providers. Methods Qualitative thematic analysis was used to identify, analyze, and report themes that describe encounters with professionals in different social or healthcare environments. In-depth interview data were gathered…

Response Mechanisms of Invertebrates to Bacillus thuringiensis and Its Pesticidal Proteins

2021

SUMMARY Extensive use of chemical insecticides adversely affects both environment and human health. One of the most popular biological pest control alternatives is bioinsecticides based on Bacillus thuringiensis. This entomopathogenic bacterium produces different protein types which are toxic to several insect, mite, and nematode species. Currently, insecticidal proteins belonging to the Cry and Vip3 groups are widely used to control insect pests both in formulated sprays and in transgenic crops. However, the benefits of B. thuringiensis-based products are threatened by insect resistance evolution. Numerous studies have highlighted that mutations in genes coding for surrogate receptors are …

$D\bar{D}^*$ scattering and $\chi_{c1}(3872)$ in nuclear matter

2021

We study the behaviour of the $\chi_{c1}(3872)$, also known as $X(3872)$, in dense nuclear matter. We begin from a picture in vacuum of the $X(3872)$ as a purely molecular $(D \bar D^*-c.c.)$ state, generated as a bound state from a heavy-quark symmetry leading-order interaction between the charmed mesons, and analyze the $D \bar D^*$ scattering $T-$matrix ($T_{D \bar D^*}$) inside of the medium. Next, we consider also mixed-molecular scenarios and, in all cases, we determine the corresponding $X(3872)$ spectral function and the $D \bar D^*$ amplitude, with the mesons embedded in the dense environment. We find important nuclear corrections for $T_{D \bar D^*}$ and the pole position of the r…

Finite volume corrections to forward Compton scattering off the nucleon

2021

We calculate the spin-averaged amplitude for doubly virtual forward Compton scattering off nucleons in the framework of manifestly Lorentz invariant baryon chiral perturbation theory at complete one-loop order $O(p^4)$. The calculations are carried out both in the infinite and in a finite volume. The obtained results allow for a detailed estimation the finite-volume corrections to the amplitude which can be extracted on the lattice using the background field technique.

NECAB2 participates in an endosomal pathway of mitochondrial stress response at striatal synapses

2021

Synaptic signaling depends on ATP generated by mitochondria. Due to extensive connectivity, the striatum is especially vulnerable to mitochondrial dysfunction and thus requires efficient mitochondrial quality control. We found that the neuronal calcium-binding protein NECAB2 ensures synaptic function in the striatum by increasing mitochondrial efficiency. NECAB2 associates with early endosomes and mitochondria at striatal synapses. Loss of NECAB2 dysregulates proteins of the endosomal ESCRT machinery and oxidative phosphorylation. Mitochondria from NECAB2-deficient mice are more abundant but less efficient. These mitochondria exhibit increased respiration and superoxide production but produ…

Floquet theory for temporal correlations and spectra in time-periodic open quantum systems: Application to squeezed parametric oscillation beyond the…

2021

Open quantum systems can display periodic dynamics at the classical level either due to external periodic modulations or to self-pulsing phenomena typically following a Hopf bifurcation. In both cases, the quantum fluctuations around classical solutions do not reach a quantum-statistical stationary state, which prevents adopting the simple and reliable methods used for stationary quantum systems. Here we put forward a general and efficient method to compute two-time correlations and corresponding spectral densities of time-periodic open quantum systems within the usual linearized (Gaussian) approximation for their dynamics. Using Floquet theory we show how the quantum Langevin equations for…

Synthesis and characterization of nanomaterial based on halloysite and hectorite clay minerals covalently bridged

2021

Halloysite is an aluminosilicate clay with a predominantly hollow tubular structure (HNTs) able to act as a nanocontainer for the encapsulation of several chemicals. However, HNTs possess low affinity for metal ions in their pristine form and they need to be modified for improving their adsorption capabilities. Therefore, to overcome this issue herein we report a straightforward approach for the covalent modification of the external surface of halloysite nanotubes with hectorite clay. Compared to halloysite, hectorite possesses a lamellar structure with higher cation exchange capacity. The covalent linkage between the two clays was verified by several techniques (FTIR spectroscopy, 13C CP-M…

A nickel complex incorporating an N2 O ligand with a rare η2 -N,N'-coordination mode was isolated and characterized by X-ray crystallography, as well as by IR and solid-state NMR spectroscopy augmented by 15 N-labeling experiments. The isoelectronic nickel CO2 complex reported for comparison features a very similar solid-state structure. Computational studies revealed that η2 -N2 O binds to nickel slightly stronger than η2 -CO2 in this case, and comparably to or slightly stronger than η2 -CO2 to transition metals in general. Comparable transition-state energies for the formation of isomeric η2 -N,N'- and η2 -N,O-complexes, and a negligible activation barrier for the decomposition of the lat…

THE INFLUENCE OF TEACHER-STUDENT COMMUNICATION ON THE IMPORTANCE OF PHYSICAL EDUCATION

2021

During adolescence, there is a significant risk of sports abandonment associated with sedentarism and overweight. For this reason, Physical Education (PE) classes should be an opportunity to bring physical activity and sport closer to schoolchildren developing, and consolidating healthy lifestyle habits. Considering the importance that teaching communication procedures can have in the motivation of students, and given the lack of specific studies that investigate the influence of these processes on the motivation to practice sport in the context of PE, the aim of this study is to determine the effect of the teacher's communicational dimensions (challenging, encouragement and praise, non-ver…

Strawberries and Cream: The Relationship Between Food Rejection and Thematic Knowledge of Food in Young Children

2021

Establishing healthy dietary habits in childhood is crucial in preventing long-term repercussions, as a lack of dietary variety in childhood leads to enduring impacts on both physical and cognitive health. Poor conceptual knowledge about food has recently been shown to be a driving factor of food rejection. The majority of studies that have investigated the development of food knowledge along with food rejection have mainly focused on one subtype of conceptual knowledge about food, namely taxonomic categories (e.g., vegetables or meat). However, taxonomic categorization is not the only way to understand the food domain. We also heavily rely on other conceptual structures, namely thematic as…

2021

The paper gives the results of the first studies on the molecular divergence between native and non-native populations of Speonomus normandi hydrophilus (Jeannel, 1907). This species is endemic to Massif Arize in the Central Pyrenees (France), and represents highly specialised organisms that live underground. In 1982, one hundred specimens of S. normandi hydrophilus had been experimentally introduced into the Dzwonnica Cave (Poland). Since then, a numerous population has developed in the Towarna-Dzwonnica cave system, and the neighbouring Cabanowa Cave. After almost 40 years of isolation between native and non-native populations, the genetic variations were examined using the COI and 28S rD…

Insect Immune Evasion by Dauer and Nondauer Entomopathogenic Nematodes

2021

The immune response of animals, including insects, is overcome by some parasites. For example, dauer larvae (DL) of the obligate entomopathogenic nematodes (EPNs) Heterorhabditis and Steinernema can invade insects, evade their defenses, and cause death. Although DL were long assumed to be the only infective stage of nematodes, recent reports suggest that L2-L3 larvae of facultative EPNs are also capable of killing insects. There are no studies, to our knowledge, about the role of nonimmunological barriers (the exoskeleton and its openings) in avoiding infection by DL and L2-L3 larvae, or whether these larval stages evade the host immune system in the same way. The objective of this study wa…

Mutations in PRDM15 Are a Novel Cause of Galloway-Mowat Syndrome

2021

Background Galloway-Mowat syndrome (GAMOS) is characterized by neurodevelopmental defects and a progressive nephropathy, which typically manifests as steroid-resistant nephrotic syndrome. The prognosis of GAMOS is poor, and the majority of children progress to renal failure. The discovery of monogenic causes of GAMOS has uncovered molecular pathways involved in the pathogenesis of disease. Methods Homozygosity mapping, whole-exome sequencing, and linkage analysis were used to identify mutations in four families with a GAMOS-like phenotype, and high-throughput PCR technology was applied to 91 individuals with GAMOS and 816 individuals with isolated nephrotic syndrome. Age is not just a number – senescence affects how fish populations respond to different fishing regimes

2021

Abstract The presence of senescence in natural populations remains an unsolved problem in biology. Described as an age-dependent increase in natural mortality (known as actuarial senescence) and an age-dependent decrease in fecundity (known as reproductive senescence), the role of senescence in nature is still poorly understood. Based on empirical estimates of reproductive and actuarial senescence, we explored how senescence affects the population dynamics of Coregonus albula, a small, schooling salmonid fish. Using an empirically-based eco-evolutionary model, we investigated how the presence or absence of senescence affects how the fish population responds to pristine, intensive harvest, a…

Guidelines Have a Key Role in Driving HCV Elimination by Advocating for Simple HCV Care Pathways.

2021

The availability of pangenotypic direct-acting antivirals for treatment of hepatitis C (HCV) has provided an opportunity to simplify patient pathways. Recent clinical practice guidelines have recognised the need for simplification to ensure that elimination of HCV as a public health concern remains a priority. Despite the move towards simplified treatment algorithms, there remains some complexity in the recommendations for the management of genotype 3 patients with compensated cirrhosis. In an era where additional clinical trial data are not anticipated, clinical guidance should consider experience gained in real-world settings. Although more experience is required for some pangenotypic the…

Einstein, Planck and Vera Rubin: Relevant Encounters Between the Cosmological and the Quantum Worlds

2021

In Cosmology and in Fundamental Physics there is a crucial question like: where the elusive substance that we call Dark Matter is hidden in the Universe and what is it made of? that, even after 40 years from the Vera Rubin seminal discovery [1] does not have a proper answer. Actually, the more we have investigated, the more this issue has become strongly entangled with aspects that go beyond the established Quantum Physics, the Standard Model of Elementary particles and the General Relativity and related to processes like the Inflation, the accelerated expansion of the Universe and High Energy Phenomena around compact objects. Even Quantum Gravity and very exotic Dark Matter particle candid…
