Sport as a vehicle for implementing corporate social responsibility: firms listed on the Warsaw and Moscow stock exchanges

2021

This paper provides a descriptive account of the extent to which firms listed on the Warsaw (WSE) and Moscow (MSE) Stock Exchanges use sport for their corporate social responsibility agendas. Drawing on institutional isomorphism, we deductively categorised CSR through sport cases based on the framework developed by Bason and Anagnostopoulos (2015). A total of 1317 documents were content-analysed, 442 from WSE firms and 875 from MSE firms. A total of 2501 CSR-through-sport initiatives were reported over the five-year period studied (2013-2017) in the WSE case and 2175 in the MSE case. Our results show that internationally listed firms are increasingly embracing sport for their CSR programs, …

Is Autonomy Always Beneficial for Work Engagement? A Six-year Four-Wave Follow-Up Study.

2021

Work engagement is expected to result from job resources such as autonomy. However, previous results have yielded that the autonomy–work engagement relationship is not always particularly strong. Whereas previous longitudinal studies have examined this relationship as an average at a specific point in time, this study examined whether this relationship is different within individuals from one time to another over the years. Furthermore, experiences of work engagement are expected to affect how employees benefit from autonomy, but no studies have so far investigated whether the initial level of work engagement affects the autonomy–work engagement relationship. This study aimed to first ident…

Unravelling cosmic velocity flows: a Helmholtz-Hodge decomposition algorithm for cosmological simulations

2021

In the context of intra-cluster medium turbulence, it is essential to be able to split the turbulent velocity field in a compressive and a solenoidal component. We describe and implement a new method for this aim, i.e., performing a Helmholtz-Hodge decomposition, in multi-grid, multi-resolution descriptions, focusing on (but not being restricted to) the outputs of AMR cosmological simulations. The method is based on solving elliptic equations for a scalar and a vector potential, from which the compressive and the solenoidal velocity fields, respectively, are derived through differentiation. These equations are addressed using a combination of Fourier (for the base grid) and iterative (for t…

Neisseria gonorrhoeae antimicrobial resistance in Spain: a prospective multicentre study.

2021

Abstract Objectives Gonococcal infection is one of the most reported sexually transmitted infections and antimicrobial resistance in Neisseria gonorrhoeae (NG) is challenging for the treatment of this infection. This observational study aimed to describe antimicrobial resistance of NG and epidemiological data from patients with gonococcal infection in eight regions of Spain, for updating the local therapeutic guidelines. Methods MICs of penicillin, cefixime, ceftriaxone, azithromycin, ciprofloxacin, fosfomycin and gentamicin were determined by Etest for all NG isolates recovered from 1 April 2018 to 30 September 2019 from 10 hospitals in Spain. Resistance determinants were identified using …

Color degradation mapping of rock art paintings using microfading spectrometry

2021

[EN] Rock art documentation is a complex task that should be carried out in a complete, rigorous and exhaustive way, in order to take particular actions that allow stakeholders to preserve the archaeological sites under constant deterioration. The pigments used in prehistoric paintings present high light sensitivity and rigorous scientific color degradation mapping is not usually undertaken in overall archaeological sites. Microfading spectrometry is a suitable technique for determining the light-stability of pigments found in rock art paintings in a non-destructive way. Spectral data can be transformed into colorimetric information following the recommendations published by the Commission …

Entrepreneurial Intentions: Moving the Field Forwards

2021

The purpose of this article is to articulate reasoning as to why there is a pressing need for a contextually based temporal approach towards the study of entrepreneurial intentions. Having done so, a potential means by which this can be achieved is put forth through assuming a socially situated perspective that links intentions, the entrepreneurial process of new venture creation, and a model of action abstractness. A conceptual model is proposed taking into consideration the entrepreneurial intention domain ‘as is’, ‘as should be’ and ‘as could be’. Value of current practice is assessed and challenged in a bid to stimulate new thinking in the area. The dynamic model provided contributes t…

Vitamins in wine: Which, what for, and how much?

2021

Vitamins are essential compounds to yeasts, and notably in winemaking contexts. Vitamins are involved in numerous yeast metabolic pathways, including those of amino acids, fatty acids, and alcohols, which suggests their notable implication in fermentation courses, as well as in the development of aromatic compounds in wines. Although they are major components in the course of those microbial processes, their significance and impact have not been extensively studied in the context of winemaking and wine products, as most of the studies focusing on the subject in the past decades have relied on relatively insensitive and imprecise analytical methods. Therefore, this review provides an extensi…

Observation of Coulomb-Assisted Nuclear Bound State of Ξ−–N14 System

2021

In an emulsion-counter hybrid experiment performed at J-PARC, a Ξ^{-} absorption event was observed which decayed into twin single-Λ hypernuclei. Kinematic calculations enabled a unique identification of the reaction process as Ξ^{-}+^{14}N→_{Λ}^{10}Be+_{Λ}^{5}He. For the binding energy of the Ξ^{-} hyperon in the Ξ^{-}-^{14}N system a value of 1.27±0.21  MeV was deduced. The energy level of Ξ^{-} is likely a nuclear 1p state which indicates a weak ΞN-ΛΛ coupling.

Assortative pairing for boldness and consequences for reproductive success in Montagu’s harrier

2021

Abstract Behavioural combination within pairs depending on personality and plasticity might influence reproductive success. However, studies testing this hypothesis are rare, especially in the case of monogamous species with bi-parental care in which the sexes exhibit different behavioural roles. In this study, we investigated the pairing patterns for both boldness and boldness plasticity in Montagu’s harriers (Circus pygargus), a species with sex-specific care, and the consequences for their reproductive success. We measured individual boldness and plasticity for both sexes, and we assessed the pairing pattern in the Montagu’s harrier population for these two traits. We calculated four ind…

Observation of a resonant structure in e+e− → ωη and another in e+e− → ωπ0 at center-of-mass energies between 2.00 and 3.08 GeV

2021

Abstract Born cross sections for the processes e + e − → ω η and e + e − → ω π 0 have been determined for center-of-mass energies between 2.00 and 3.08 GeV with the BESIII detector at the BEPCII collider. The results obtained in this work are consistent with previous measurements but with improved precision. Two resonant structures are observed. In the e + e − → ω η cross sections, a resonance with a mass of ( 2176 ± 24 ± 3 ) MeV / c 2 and a width of ( 89 ± 50 ± 5 ) MeV is observed with a significance of 6.2σ. Its properties are consistent with the ϕ ( 2170 ) . In the e + e − → ω π 0 cross sections, a resonance denoted Y ( 2040 ) is observed with a significance of more than 10σ. Its mass an…

A Theoretical and Experimental Study of Electrochemical pH Control at Gold Interdigitated Microband Arrays

2021

In electroanalysis, solution pH is a critical parameter that often needs to be adjusted and controlled for the detection of particular analytes. This is most commonly performed by the addition of chemicals, such as strong acids or bases. Electrochemical in-situ pH control offers the possibility for the local adjustment of pH at the point of detection, without additional reagents. FEA simulations have been performed to guide experimental design for both electroanalysis and in-situ control of solution pH. No previous model exists that describes the generation of protons at an interdigitated electrode array in buffered solution with one comb acting as a protonator, and the other as the sensor.…

Druggable genome and precision medicine in cancer: current challenges.

2021

The past decades have seen tremendous developments with respect to "specific" therapeutics that target key signaling molecules to conquer cancer. The key advancements with multiomics technologies, especially genomics, have allowed physicians and molecular oncologists to design "tailor-made" solutions to the specific oncogenes that are deregulated in individual patients, a strategy which has turned out to be successful though the patients quickly develop resistance. The swift integration of multidisciplinary approaches has led to the development of "next generation" therapeutics and, with synergistic therapeutic regimes combined with immune checkpoint inhibitors to reactivate the dampened im…

Peripheral Nerve Responses to Muscle Stretching: A Systematic Review

2021

Stretching is commonly used to increase range of motion and flexibility. Therefore, investigations are usually oriented towards the muscle-tendon unit. Limited evidence exists regarding potential effects of stretching on peripheral nerves which lie within muscles. The objective of this investigation will be to elucidate the responses of peripheral nerves to stretching. A literature search was performed using the following databases: Scopus, NLM Pubmed and ScienceDirect. Studies regarding the effects of stretching protocols on responses of peripheral nerves were retrieved for investigation. The NHLBI tool was used for quality assessment. Outcomes included nerve stiffness, nerve displacement,…

EEG Data Quality: Determinants and Impact in a Multicenter Study of Children, Adolescents, and Adults with Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (…

2021

Electroencephalography (EEG) represents a widely established method for assessing altered and typically developing brain function. However, systematic studies on EEG data quality, its correlates, and consequences are scarce. To address this research gap, the current study focused on the percentage of artifact-free segments after standard EEG pre-processing as a data quality index. We analyzed participant-related and methodological influences, and validity by replicating landmark EEG effects. Further, effects of data quality on spectral power analyses beyond participant-related characteristics were explored. EEG data from a multicenter ADHD-cohort (age range 6 to 45 years), and a non-ADHD sc…

Radio signatures from encounters between Neutron Stars and QCD-Axion Minihalos around Primordial Black Holes

2021

Probing the QCD axion dark matter (DM) hypothesis is extremely challenging as the axion interacts very weakly with Standard Model particles. We propose a new avenue to test the QCD axion DM via transient radio signatures coming from encounters between neutron stars (NSs) and axion minihalos around primordial black holes (PBHs). We consider a general QCD axion scenario in which the PQ symmetry breaking occurs before (or during) inflation coexisting with a small fraction of DM in the form of PBHs. The PBHs will unavoidably acquire around them axion minihalos with the typical length scale of parsecs. The axion density in the minihalos may be much higher than the local DM density, and the prese…

Radiomic Machine Learning Classifiers in Spine Bone Tumors: A Multi-Software, Multi-Scanner Study

2021

Purpose: Spinal lesion differential diagnosis remains challenging even in MRI. Radiomics and machine learning (ML) have proven useful even in absence of a standardized data mining pipeline. We aimed to assess ML diagnostic performance in spinal lesion differential diagnosis, employing radiomic data extracted by different software. Methods: Patients undergoing MRI for a vertebral lesion were retrospectively analyzed (n = 146, 67 males, 79 females; mean age 63 ± 16 years, range 8-89 years) and constituted the train (n = 100) and internal test cohorts (n = 46). Part of the latter had additional prior exams which constituted a multi-scanner, external test cohort (n = 35). Lesions were la…

Muscular Fitness and Work Ability among Physical Therapists.

2021

The Work Ability Index (WAI) is a validated and widely used tool in occupational research. However, normative values for physical therapists (PTs) by age and sex are lacking. Although the nature of PTs’ work is physically demanding, it is unknown whether muscular fitness is associated with their WAI. This study sought to provide reference WAI data for Spanish PTs and to evaluate the association between PTs’ muscular fitness and WAI. Data on WAI of 1005 PTs were collected using a questionnaire. A subgroup (n = 68) performed a battery of physical tests including grip strength, push-ups and back-extension endurance. Associations between muscular fitness and WAI were evaluated using logistic re…

Binge-Watching as Case of Escapist Entertainment Use

2021

Although the concept of escapism is widely used in entertainment research, it lacks theoretical and empirical differentiation. Based on the transactional model of stress and coping, we extend previous attempts to conceptualize escapism as a form of emotion-focused avoidance coping. In contrast to the primarily negative connotation of escapism found in prior research, we propose that escapist entertainment use may be a functional coping strategy in some situations and may thus have beneficial effects on the well-being of media users. To develop and illustrate our perspective, we turn to binge-watching as a prominent example of escapist entertainment use. We show exemplarily how escapist bing…

De Garengeot Hernia: Case Report and Review of the Literature of a Rare Femoral Hernia

2021

AbstractDe Garengeot hernia is a rare femoral hernia defined as the presence of the appendix within the femoral hernia sac. The incidence of appendicitis in this type of hernia is a rare condition that accounts for 0.08–0.13% of all De Garengeot hernias. We describe the case of a 61-year-old woman that presented at the emergency department with a tender mass (diameter 10 × 8 cm) in the right groin region for 5 days associated with pain in lower right abdomen and accompanied by fever (38 °C). Computed tomography (CT) of the abdomen revealed the presence of a complex fluid collection with small foci of air in the right inguinal region, measuring 9 × 7 × 10 cm in the 3 orthogonal dimensions an…

Detection Of Genomic Variants Of SARS-CoV-2 Circulating In Wastewater By High-Throughput Sequencing

2021

The use of SARS-CoV-2 metagenomics in wastewater can allow the detection of variants circulating at community level. After comparing with clinical databases, we identified three novel variants in the spike gene, and six new variants in the spike detected for the first time in Spain. We finally support the hypothesis that this approach allows the identification of unknown SARS-CoV-2 variants or detected at only low frequencies in clinical genomes.

Effect of substrate particle size on burrowing of the juvenile freshwater pearl mussel Margaritifera margaritifera

2021

AbstractJuveniles of the endangered freshwater pearl mussel (FPM,Margaritifera margaritifera) live burrowed in stream substrate for the first years of their life. Fine sediments block water exchange within substrate and may cause juvenile mortality and recruitment failure. To better understand the connection between success of juvenile FPM and substrate particle size, it would be important to understand behavioural responses of FPM to varying substrate sizes at this critical life stage. We placed newly detached FPM juveniles in a 7-mm layer of sieved sand sorted into five sizes (< 120, 120–200, 200–250, 250–500 and 500–650 µm) each with 10 replicate dishes, 10 juveniles per dish, with bu…

Temporomandibular joint arthrocentesis guided by ultrasonography: An anatomical study

2021

The temporomandibular joint (TMJ) arthrocentesis is a common procedure in maxillofacial surgery departments for the treatment of TMJ dysfunction. The use of ultrasonography in this area is rare, and in the vast majority of cases only as a diagnostic, and non-therapeutic use. Through this study we propose the equipment and ultrasound parameters necessary to obtain detailed and practical images when using ultrasonography as a therapeutic guide in arthrocentesis of TMJ. In addition, we provide data regarding the placement and working angulations of both the ultrasound probe and the needle that are ideal for facilitating image-guided puncture. It is a simple technique, with a relatively short l…
