Pure-Tone Thresholds, Speech Understanding, and Their Correlates in Samples of Men of Different Ages1

Pure-tone thresholds and speech understanding were studied in three samples of men of different ages (31-35, 51-55 and 71-75 years). The air-conducted pure-tone thresholds were measured at 125-8,000 Hz and speech understanding by the help of interrupted and masked speech tests. The audiological measures were related to measures of other sensory functions, psychomotor speed, cognitive functions, psychic well-being, occupational and educational background and health. The results indicated a clear decrement in all audiological measures when proceeding from younger to older age groups. Conservative surgery of renal cell carcinoma.

Abstract From 1967 to 1985 conservative surgery (enucleation, n = 49; partial resection, n = 7) was performed for renal tumors in 57 patients (age 31-77, mean 54.8 years). Imperative indications for conservative surgery (n = 29) were chronic renal failure, benign pathology of contralateral kidney, functional or anatomical solitary kidney, and bilateral tumors. Elective conservative surgery (n = 28) was done for small, peripherally located lesions, in cases of uncertain malignancy and in one tumor detected by chance during stone surgery. The formation equilibria of nickel(II) violurato-complexes in water and dimethylsulphoxide-water (80∶20) as well as deprotonation of the coordinated ligands and related stereochemical changes are reported. The stability constants of the Ni2+-H2V− complexes logβ1=5.06, Iogβ2=9.38, logβ3=12.98 as well as the acidity constants of the [Ni(H2V)3]− complex, logβj1= 8.37, logβj2=15.76, logβj3=22.37 are determined at 25 °C and 0.1M NaClO4. A new violurato-complex of Ni2+, Na4[Ni(HV)3]5H2O, is isolated and characterized.

An experimental study has been carried out using rats stills in the growth stage, whose right hindlimbs have been immobilized. Weekly, during four weeks, the animals were destroyed and measurements taken of the tibias and femurs, establishing that the rate of tibialis growth was higher in the immobilized limb than in the free limb (p. o. 001). The femurs, however, showed a similarity of measurement in both limbs. Our findings show that immobilization of a limb in a functional position is in no way prejudicial to bone growth.

Utilization of glucose and proline in the brain of adult insects

Abstract The objective of this study was to ascertain if proline can be used as a substrate by insect brains. Utilization of d -[U14C]glucose and l -[U14C]proline by isolated brains from 25 different species of insects, belonging to six separate orders, was measured using a radiomicrorespirometric method. Glucose utilization is more pronounced in brains of relatively smaller and highly evolved insects than in larger and more primitive insects. Brains of Blattodea exhibit little proline utilization. 14CO2 production from labelled glucose and proline in brains of insects seems to be correlated with the metabolic rate of these organs.

We have studied the sputtering of aluminium (110) surface with argon ions. The Morse pair potentail was used for Al−Al interaction, the Lennard-Jones potential for Ar−Ar interaction and both the Moliere potential and the universal potential of Ziegler et al. for Ar−Al interaction. Muscle metabolites and blood lactate concentration were studied in five male subjects during five constant-load cycling exercises. The power outputs were below, equal to and above aerobic (AerT) and anaerobic (AnT) threshold as determined during an incremental leg cycling test. At AerT, muscle lactate had increased significantly (p less than 0.05) from the rest value of 2.31 to 5.56 mmol X kg-1 wet wt. This was accompanied by a significant reduction in CP by 28% (p less than 0.05), whereas only a minor change (9%) was observed for ATP.
