Coronary Spasm in Patients Treated by Percutaneous Transluminal Coronary Angioplasty

The appearance of coronary spasm during PTCA was analyzed in 140 consecutive patients with stable and unstable angina. Coronary spasm was found in 27 patients (19%) and was more common in unstable than in stable angina pectoris (22 versus 5 patients). While coronary spasm could be seen in the first coronary angiogram in 5/27 patients, it developed during the diagnostic procedure in 6/27 patients. In 16/27 patients coronary spasm was induced by the balloon or the guide wire itself.

Capacity of various organic residues to support adequate earthworm biomass for vermicomposting

We tested the potential of different kinds and combinations of wastes to support the biomass ofEisenia fetida (Sav.) capable of processing a given amount of waste in a period of ca. 1 month. Mixed miscellaneous wastes and activated sewage sludge mixed with or embedded in sieved pine bark showed capacity to maintain the required biomass for a long period. Wastes were converted into odourless castings of good physical structure, provided that a sufficient population was present from the beginning and fresh waste was added regularly. A horizontally working “worm bed compost” was designed instead of the “load-on-top” principle.

Spectrophotometric determination of chlorhexidine with bromocresol green by flow-injection and manual methods

Abstract A spectrophotometric study of the chlorhexidine/bromocresol green/Triton X-100 system is reported; at pH 5.3, both 2:1 and 1:1 bromocresol green/chlorhexidine complexes are formed. In the manual spectrophotometric method, Beer's law is obeyed for chlorhexidine concentrations of 2.9–32.2 μg ml −1 (r.s.d. 0.4–1.3%); the molar absorptivity is 12 500 l mol −1 cm −1 . In the flow-injection method, the calibration graph is linear for the chlorhexidine range 23.0–83.9 μg ml −1 (r.s.d. 0.8%); the injection is ca. 60 h −1 . Benzocaine, acetylsalicylic acid, ascorbic acid and sucrose are tolerated at 10 −2 −10 −3 M levels. Hibitane 5% was analyzed successfully.

Monte Carlo Simulation of Alloy Phase Diagrams and Short-Range Order

As a prototype model for order-disorder phenomena in binary alloys, a face-centered cubic lattice is considered,the sites of which can be taken by either A-atoms or B-atoms, assuming pair-wise interactions between nearest (J) and next nearest neighbours (J). The phase diagram is constructed from Monte Carlo calculations. Some technical aspects essential for the success of such calculations are briefly mentioned (use of grand-canonical rather than canonical ensemble, how to obtain the free energy needed to locate first-order phase transitions, etc.). Calcium antagonists have successfully been used in the treatment of hypertension, cardiac arrhythmias and coronary heart disease. Recent evidence has suggested that such agents may also play a role in the treatment of malignant tumors. Verapamil, a calcium entry blocker, has been reported to enhance the cytotoxicity of several anticancer drugs under in vitro- and in vivo-conditions [1–10]. The effects observed could be explained by an enhanced drug accumulation due to a Verapamil-induced inhibition of the drug efflux from the cancer cells.

Coadaptation can occur either because of local adaptation in a geographically widespread population and/or because of intrinsic adaptation to the state of other genes or chomosomes. This secretion required protein synthesis, but was independent of RNA formation (Mormeneo & Sentandreu 1982). Lymphocyte subpopulations in solvent-exposed workers.

To estimate the cellular immune response of workers highly exposed to mixtures of organic solvents, subpopulations of peripheral blood lymphocytes (PBLs) were analyzed. For this, the PBLs of nine floorers (aged 25–58 years, exposure time 8–35 years) were subsequently labelled with monoclonal antibodies OKT 4, OKT 8, OKT 11, anti-Leu 7 and anti-Leu 12. Analysis was made by a FACS IV cell sorter (Becton-Dickinson, USA). The control group consisted of matched pairs of healthy donors. Five cases of solitary bone cysts treated by local intracavity inyection of methilprednisolone acetate are reported. AHcases presented a pathological fracture on the c1inical examination. Three cases reached a complete clinical and radiological suecess. One case got a fair result and the last one had a poor result, with relapse and new fracture, three years after the initial treatment.

Effect of aggregation of a dispersed rigid filler on the elastic characteristics of a polymer composite

We proposed a method for describing the effective elastic characteristics of a polymer composite with a rigid aggregating filler. An important feature of such a medium is the variable coupling of the inclusion phase in relation to its volume content. A change in the degree of coupling of the filler is accounted for by introducing an additional parameter. We previously showed that some (nonsubstituted) aziridines derived from polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (arene imines) elicit various mutagenic and genotoxic effects in bacteria and mammalian cells and that these arene imines are active at much lower concentrations than the corresponding epoxide analogues. Polarization Effects in Photo- and Electrodisintegration of the Deuteron

Polarization observables in deuteron photodisintegration like photon and target asymmetries and one- and two nucleon polarization of the final state are studied with respect to their sensitivity to subnuclear degrees of freedom. Furthermore it is shown that the electric form factor of the neutron has a sizeable influence on the polarization asymmetry in d(\(\overset{\lower0.5em\hbox{$\smash{\scriptscriptstyle\rightharpoonup}$}}{e}\),e’n)p with polarized electrons. Uncertainties arising from potential model dependence are discussed.
