Effects of 8 weeks' endurance training on skeletal muscle metabolism in 56?70-year-old sedentary men

1977

The effects of 8 weeks' endurance training on muscle metabolism at rest and after a submaximal bicycle ergometer exercise were studied in 31 previously sedentary men, aged 56-70. Training consisted of 3-5 one hour exercise bouts per week including walking-jogging, swimming, gymnastics and ball games. The effects of training were similar to those previously reported for younger men. Mean maximal oxygen uptake increased (11%), as did the resting values for muscle glycogen concentration, the enzymes representing aerobic energy metabolism (malate dehydrogenase, succinate dehydrogenase), and also some of the anaerobic enzymes (creatine phosphokinase, lactate dehydrogenase). Lactate production du…

Studien zum Vorgang der Wasserstoffübertragung, 42. Elektroreduktionen von prochiralen Arylketonen an grenzflächenmodifizierten Kohleelektroden

1977

Development of the photosynthetic apparatus during light-dependent greening of a mutant of Chlorella fusca.

1977

The formation of chlorophyll, cytochrome f, P-700, ribulose bisphosphate carboxylase as well as photosynthesis and Hill reaction activities were tested during the light-dependent greening process of the Chlorella fusca mutant G 10. Neither chlorophyll nor protochlorophyllide was detected in the darkgrown cells. When transferred to light the mutant cells developed chlorophyll and established its photosynthetic capacity after a short lag phase. In the in vivo absorption spectra a spectral shift of the red absorption peak position from 674 to 680 nm was indicated during the first 3 h of greening. Cytochrome f was already present in the dark-grown cells, but during the greening phase a threefol…

Charge-Asymmetry Equilibration in the Reaction ofXe129,132,136withAu197near the Interaction Barrier

1977

Neutron-proton population ratios for quasielastic and inelastic processes in the reactions of 761-MeV $^{129}\mathrm{Xe}$, 769-MeV $^{132}\mathrm{Xe}$, and 795-MeV $^{136}\mathrm{Xe}$ ions with thick $^{197}\mathrm{Au}$ targets were determined radiochemically. Completely relaxed $\frac{N}{Z}$ ratios are observed for damped collisions involving the transfer of $\ensuremath{\Delta}Zg~1$ charge units. The limiting condition $\ensuremath{\Delta}Z\ensuremath{\approx}1$ corresponds to a characteristic time of the order of ${10}^{\ensuremath{-}22}$ sec which indicates the absence of dissipative forces in the equilibration of the charge-asymmetry mode.

Reversible graft versus host reaction as cause of erythrophagic splenomegaly in a child?

1977

The case history of a 9 months old infant with hepatosplenomegaly, pancytopnaenia and disturbances of clotting and cellular immune reactivity is reported. The spleen was removed and showed striking erythrophagocytosis by proliferating histiocytes, typical of "familial erythrophagocytic reticulosis" (Farquhar). A graft-versus-host reaction is discussed as a possible underlying cause. The favourable clinical course and full recovery point to an interrelation with primary hypersplenism.

Changes of sensory conduction velocity and refractory periods with decreasing tissue temperature in man.

1977

Changes with temperature of maximum sensory nerve conduction velocity as well as absolute and relative refractory periods were tested in 14 human subjects. Corresponding to previously published findings maximum conduction velocity decreased with cooling following a Q10 of +1.4. The absolute and relative refractory periods were increased by cooling, the Q10 being -3.1 and -3.35 respectively. There was a tendency showing a more pronounced temperature effect at low temperatures. The Q10 and the steepness of the regressionline changed at the level of 26.9 degrees C, but were significant for the relative refractory period only.

Electrical and mechanical activity of mammalian heart muscle fibres treated with papaverine

1977

The action of papaverine on electrical and mechanical activity was investigated in ventricular and atrial heart muscle fibres from guinea-pigs and cats. 1. Papaverine (10−5 M–5×10−5M) had positive, negative or no inotropic effects in ventricular preparations; positive inotropic effects were not observed after pretreatment of the animals with reserpine. In atrial preparations, papaverine (2×10−5M) had a positive inotropic effect that was independent of endogenously stored catecholamines. 2. The effects of isoprenaline and dibutyryl cyclic AMP were potentiated by papaverine (10−5 M–2×10−5M). 3. The action potential duration was always prolonged by papaverine in ventricular as well as in atria…

Optimum design for work-hardening adaptation

1977

Abstract The finite element-linear programming approach and the work-hardening adaptation criterion are used to formulate a general theory of optimum design of rigid-work-hardening structures subjected to loads which vary statically within given limits. Self-weight, as well as some technological constraints, can be introduced into the framework of the optimization problem. The optimality conditions are discussed with the aid of geometrical descriptions as well, and a comparison is made with the standard limit design. Numerical applications are given for a plane truss and a plane frame with axial force-bending moment interaction.

New high energy γ-ray sources observed by COS B

1977

LOCALISED γ-ray sources contribute to the overall galactic emission; some of these sources have been identified with known astronomical objects1,2, while several unidentified γ-ray sources have also been reported3,4. We describe here a search for γ-ray sources using data from the ESA γ-ray satellite COS B which revealed 10 new unidentified sources. These sources seem to be galactic with typical γ-ray luminosities above 100 MeV in excess of 1035 erg s−1.

Critical evaluation of the Obscure Figures Test as an instrument for measuring "cognitive innovation".

1977

The Obscure Figures Test has been conceptualized by Acker and McReynolds (1965) as a measure of Cognitive Innovation. As a general concept Cognitive Innovation refers to an integration of different kinds of behavioral systems, e.g., creativity and exploratory behavior. Considering recent research about the relationship between curiosity and creativity as well as basic assumptions underlying this test, it is hypothesized that this is an instrument for measuring creativity rather than curiosity. 41 boys and 41 girls ranging from 7 to 10 yr. of age were given a battery of tests of curiosity and creativity. There were significant correlations between Obscure Figures Test and creativity measure…

Zur Bewurzelung dikotyler Sandpflanzen

1977

Signal characteristics of EMG during fatigue

1977

Electromyographic (EMG) activity of m. rectus femoris muscle was registered from young male and female subjects during maintained isometric knee extension at 60% of maximal voluntary contraction. The following EMG parameters were analyzed for the entire fatigue time: integrated EMG (IEMG), averaged motor unit potential (AMUP) and power spectral density function (PSDF). The results indicated a slight but continuous rise of IEMG during the fatigue period. AMUP showed sensitivity to fatigue with increase in amplitude, rise time, and number of spikes counted. PSDF was also easily affected by fatigue so that the total power density curve was shifted towards lower frequencies with a high frequenc…

Species-specific aggregation factor in sponges : VIII. Nature and alteration of cell surface charge.

1977

Isolated cells from the siliceous spongeGeodia cydonium have been studied with respect to their partition behaviour in a two-phase aqueous polymer system. With this method it is possible to determine subtle changes in the cell surface charge. Addition of a homologous aggregation factor to the isolated cells lowers the partition rate, a finding which indicates that after binding of the aggregation factor to the cells their surface charge is reduced. The partition rate of the cells is strongly correlated with their content of membranebound sialic acid. Sixty-nine percent of the total, membrane-bound hexuronic acid is associated with the aggregation receptor; 1.8×107 aggregation receptor molec…

Attempt to calculation of delayed neutron emission probabilities using simple statistical model considerations

1977

Delayed neutron emission probabilities,P n , have been calculated using usual nuclear statistical model considerations. The influence of the incident parameters on the calculatedP n -values is discussed. The observed systematic deviation from the experimental neutron emission probabilities may be explained by the persistence of nuclear structure effects not contained in a simple statistical model.

Nerve injury in fractures of the condylar neck.

1977

Summary Although fractures of the condylar neck belong to the most frequent injuries of the jaws, and various nerves are found in close proximity to the temporomandibular joints, only little mention is made in the literature of neurological complications arising from accidents. We have therefore carried out a prospective study on nerve injuries in 237 fractures of the articular process in the period 1971–1975. We found two cases of post-traumatic Frey's syndrome, whereby the syndrome developed from a post-traumatic auriculotemporal neuralgia. We also found loss of function of auriculotemporal, buccal and facial nerves, and loss of taste sensation of the tongue in another case, caused by dam…

Transient birefringence of polymer melts in intermittent shear flow: Model analysis of the non-linear viscoelastic behaviour

1977

A non-linear viscoelastic model has been used to interpret transient flow birefringence in changing shear flow for a polymer melt. It is shown how the new model is consistent with the basic hypothesis of the linear stress-optical law. Stress growth in shear flow and relaxation after different amounts of shearing are compared with the predictions of the non-linear model. A good agreement between experimental data and theoretical predictions is found.

Virion Antigens Introduced Exogeneously into the Cell Membrane Render Syngeneic Target Cells Susceptible for T Cell-Mediated Cytolysis

1977

Non-infectious sendai virus renders H-2 matched target cells susceptible to the lytic effect of sendai virus immune cytotoxic T lymphocytes. This observation suggests that exogeneous insertion of virion antigen in the membrane of the target cell is sufficient for T cell cytotoxicity. The finding is incompatible with the concept that H-2K or H-2D gene products of the target cells must be altered in their primary structure (pretranslational effect of the virus infection) for T cell-mediated cytolysis to occur.

Brachyodonty and hypsodontyin some Palaeogene Eurasiatic Lagomorphs

1977

Abstract Palaeogene Eurasiatic lagomorphs show more or less different degrees and kinds of brachiodonty and hypsodonty in the cheek teeth. No fully brachyodont lagomorphs are known up to the present. The probably Paleocene Mimolagus from Western Kansu shows the less advanced stage against partial hypsodonty in the upper cheek teeth. Partial hypsodonty is more advanced in the late Eocene Mongolian genera Shamolagus, Gobiolagus and Lushilagus. Roots, however, are still well developed in the cheek teeth. Some recent discoveries from earlier Oligocene sites in France and Germany seem to represent a comparable degree of hypsodonty. The Asiatic Oligocene Desmatolagus is partiallyhypsodont with ro…

A two-center-oscillator-basis as an alternative set for heavy ion processes

1977

The two-center-oscillator-basis, which is constructed from harmonic oscillator wave functions developing about two different centers, suffers from numerical problems at small center separations due to the overcompleteness of the set. In order to overcome these problems we admix higher oscillator wave functions before the orthogonalization, or antisymmetrization resp. This yields a numerically stable basis set at each center separation. The results obtained for the potential energy surface are comparable with the results of more elaborate models.

Studies on the Fibrous Components of the Test ofCiona intestinalisLinnaeus. I. Cellulose-like Polysaccharide

1977

Chemical, histochemical and electron microscopic studies on the fibrous polysaccharide component of the test of Ciona intestinalis L. were made. The results showed cellulose-like fibres to be present in the cuticle layer and in the ground substance. Bundles of fibres varying in diameter from 80 to 600 nm interweave to form a conspicuous network. The bundle appears to be formed of flat fibres, 10–13 nm in width, while the fibre is composed of fibrils 3.5–5 nm; the rectangular cross section of fibres can be supposed. The probable role of this polysaccharide is discussed.

Über den thermischen abbau des poly(ɛ-caprolacton)s

1977

The thermal and electron impact induced degradation reactions of poly(e-caprolactone) {poly[oxy(1-oxohexamethylene)]} were investigated in a mass spectrometer. It can be shown that the favorated thermal degradation reaction is the cleavage of the ester bond and formation of ω-hydroxyl and ketene endgroups (Eq. (iii)) and with a lower intensity the cleavage of the OCH2-bond and formation of carboxyl-and pentenyl endgroups (Eq. (vii)). After electron impact and fragmentation of the pyrolysis products to carboxonium ions an elimination of caprolactone via a “zip”-mechanism can be observed (Eq. (v)).

Experimental reimplantation utilizing microvascular anastomosis in animals.

1977

Summary The use of the operating microscope and special microsurgical instruments make it possible to achieve successful anastomosis of blood vessels of less than 1 mm in diameter. Microvascular surgery offers newer possibilities in the transplantation of dermisfat grafts, and has led to an unusually high degree of success in the reimplantation of tissues. This paper describes a technique for microvascular anastomosis in animal experiment, using as a model the reimplantation of a completely amputated rabbit ear. In 10 amputated rabbit ears, the central auricular artery with a diameter of 0.5 mm and the two marginal auricular veins with diameter of 0.5–1.0 mm were microsurgically anastomosed…
