Lon Fuller’s Philosophical Affiliation: Prescriptive Legal Positivism (Neither Natural Law Theory nor Principialism)

2022

Young Learners' Perceptions of Learning about Sexual and Gender-Based Harassment: The Struggle for Recognition in School

2022

Abstract Based on participatory research with teachers and young learners’, this article explores students’ perceptions of learning about sexual and gender-based harassment in upper secondary school in Norway. Drawing upon theoretical considerations on recognition, intersectionality and legal literacy as educational capital, this article discusses approaches to teaching and learning that could ensure young learners’ rights to active participation and voice, which is an essential element for protection and prevention of harassment. The empirical material indicates that learners would like to learn more about these sensitive issues, although this applies to a greater extent for girls rather t…

The purpose of this reflection is…

Diabetes and cognitive decline

2022

Epidemiologic studies have documented an association between diabetes and increased risk of cognitive decline in the elderly. Based on animal model studies, several mechanisms have been proposed to explain such an association, including central insulin signaling, neurodegeneration, brain amyloidosis, and neuroinflammation. Nevertheless, the exact mechanisms in humans remain poorly defined. It is reasonable, however, that many pathways may be involved in these patients leading to cognitive impairment. A major aim of clinicians is identifying early onset of neurologic signs and symptoms in elderly diabetics to improve quality of life of those with cognitive impairment and reduce costs associa…

Evapotranspiration Retrieval Using S-SEBI Model with Landsat-8 Split-Window Land Surface Temperature Products over Two European Agricultural Crops

2022

Crop evapotranspiration (ET) is a key variable within the global hydrological cycle to account for the irrigation scheduling, water budgeting, and planning of the water resources associated with irrigation in croplands. Remote sensing techniques provide geophysical information at a large spatial scale and over a relatively long time series, and even make possible the retrieval of ET at high spatiotemporal resolutions. The present short study analyzed the daily ET maps generated with the S-SEBI model, adapted to Landsat-8 retrieved land surface temperatures and broadband albedos, at two different crop sites for two consecutive years (2017–2018). Maps of land surface temperatures were determi…

Power Production from Produced Waters via Reverse Electrodialysis: A Preliminary Assessment

2022

Wastewaters generated by crude oil extraction processes, called “produced waters” (PWs), are complex solutions that contain organic compounds, mainly hydrocarbons, and often exhibit high salinity. The large amounts of PWs represent a global issue because of their environmental impact. An approach widely used in the oil industry is the reinjection of this wastewater into the extraction wells after a suitable treatment. The high salt concentration of such solutions may be used in salinity gradient technologies to produce green electricity. Among these technologies, reverse electrodialysis (RED) is one of the most promising. In this work, the application of RED for energy generatio…

Giussani's insistence on the critical scope of experience led me to Capograssi's philosophy. He repeatedly alludes to an order of p…

An Active Learning Approach for Classifying Explosion Quakes

2022

In this work, an Active Learning approach for improving the classification of passed seismo-volcanic events is proposed. Here we study the specific case of Explosion Quakes from Stromboli Volcano versus other seismo-volcanic events, recorded as seismograms, and the use of Random Forest as a Classification method. In conformity with the active learning paradigm, the approach recalls the human intervention for the annotation of uncertain data. The uncertainty is established by the event probabilities, predicted by a trained random forest classifier. The human intervention consists of editing and relabelling the data into these main three classes: Explosion Quakes, Non-Explosion Quakes or Non-…

Facilitation of Insulin Effects by Ranolazine in Astrocytes in Primary Culture

2022

Ranolazine (Rn) is a drug used to treat persistent chronic coronary ischemia. It has also been shown to have therapeutic benefits on the central nervous system and an anti-diabetic effect by lowering blood glucose levels and however, no effects of Rn on cellular sensitivity to insulin (Ins) have been demonstrated yet. The present study aimed to investigate the permissive effects of Rn on the actions of Ins in astrocytes in primary culture. Ins at 10-8 M, Rn (10-6 M) and Ins+Rn (10-8 M and 10−6 M respectively) were added to astrocytes during 24 h. In comparison to control cells, Rn and/or Ins caused modifications in cell viability and proliferation. p-AKT, p-ERK, p-eNOS, Mn-SOD, COX-2, and t…

Carboxytherapy in dermatology.

2022

Abstract Carboxytherapy is a medical technique during which a sterile gas—carbon dioxide—is injected into the subdermal tissue. The utility of carbon dioxide injections has enhanced the practical relevance of carboxytherapy as a method for the management of multiple disorders. We have evaluated its use in the treatment of dermatologic conditions by searching electronic databases (ie, MEDLINE and PubMed) for contributions in the English language through January 2021. Carboxytherapy provides an attractive aesthetic option in skin rejuvenation, atrophic scars, striae distensae (stretch marks), cellulite-fibrolipodystrophy adhesions after liposuction, and certain types of alopecia. We discuss t…

The multiplicity of Argonaute complexes in mammalian cells

2022

Argonautes (AGOs) are a highly conserved family of proteins found in most Eukaryotes, and involved in mechanisms of gene regulation, both at the transcriptional and post-transcriptional level. Among other functions, AGO proteins associate with microRNAs to mediate the post-transcriptional repression of protein-coding genes. In this process, AGOs associate with members of the trinucleotide repeat containing 6 protein (TNRC6) protein family to form the core of the RNA-induced silencing complex (RISC), the effector machinery that mediates microRNA function. However, the description of the exact composition of the RISC has been a challenging task due to the fact the AGO's interactome is dynamic…

New regional industrial path development and innovation networks in times of economic crisis

2022

This paper presents novel research on how exogenous shocks and economic crises affect innovation, knowledge networks, and new path development in regions. Conceptually, we take a regional innovation systems perspective which views new path development as the outcome of innovation and knowledge exchange between firms and other actors, facilitated by a common institutional framework. Empirically, we draw on interviews and network data from the oil and gas industry in southern Norway. Following a long period of prosperity, the industry was hit by the oil price shock in 2014 and entered an economic crisis. The findings suggest that the shock triggered the firms to commit even more forcefully to…

A Molecular Electron Density Theory Study of the [3+2] Cycloaddition Reaction of Pseudo(mono)radical Azomethine Ylides with Phenyl Vinyl Sulphone

2022

The [3+2] cycloaddition (32CA) reaction of an azomethine ylide (AY), derived from isatin and L-proline, with phenyl vinyl sulphone has been studied within Molecular Electron Density Theory (MEDT) at the ωB97X-D/6-311G(d,p) level. ELF topological analysis of AY classifies it as a pseudo(mono)radical species with two monosynaptic basins at the C1 carbon, integrating a total of 0.76 e. While vinyl sulphone has a strong electrophilic character, AY is a supernucleophile, suggesting a high polar character and low activation energy for the reaction. The nucleophilic Parr functions indicate that the pseudoradical C1 carbon is the most nucleophilic center. The 32CA reaction presents an activat…

Desplazados ambientales: incertidumbres y respuestas jurídicas frente a un eventual conflicto humanitario

2022

Skyrmion pinning energetics in thin film systems

2022

AbstractA key issue for skyrmion dynamics and devices are pinning effects present in real systems. While posing a challenge for the realization of conventional skyrmionics devices, exploiting pinning effects can enable non-conventional computing approaches if the details of the pinning in real samples are quantified and understood. We demonstrate that using thermal skyrmion dynamics, we can characterize the pinning of a sample and we ascertain the spatially resolved energy landscape. To understand the mechanism of the pinning, we probe the strong skyrmion size and shape dependence of the pinning. Magnetic microscopy imaging demonstrates that in contrast to findings in previous investigation…

Airy-function approach to binary black hole merger waveforms: The fold-caustic diffraction model

2022

From numerical simulations of the Einstein equations, and also from gravitational wave observations, the gravitational wave signal from a binary black hole merger is seen to be simple and to possess certain universal features. The simplicity is somewhat surprising given that non-linearities of general relativity are thought to play an important role at the merger. The universal features include an increasing amplitude as we approach the merger, where transition from an oscillatory to a damped regime occurs in a pattern apparently oblivious to the initial conditions. We propose an Airy-function pattern to model the binary black hole (BBH) merger waveform, focusing on accounting for its simpl…

2022

This paper analyses, based on Genette's theory of hypertextuality, the relationship between translation and reception and the rewrites that derive from it. Leaving aside translation as a serious transformation or transposition, it focuses, first, on exploring translation as the only possible mediation to ensure the reader's familiarity with the foreign hypotext transformed by the hypertext, from the translation of Mark Twain's El Diari d'Eva and the Catalan hypertexts. Secondly, it approaches reception as a hypertextual requirement with the study of Hi ha homes que ploren perquè el sol es pon, by Francesc Trabal, a parody of Faust which, to a large extent, is explained as a playful reaction…

Production of acidic and alkaline solutions via Electrodialysis with bipolar membranes from synthetic and real brines from saltworks

2022

1. Introduction In recent decades, there has been a great deal of interest at both the industrial and academic levels in identifying unconventional sources for chemical production and raw material recovery. In this context, brine disposal, which was previously addressed as a priority to reduce environmental problems, is now seen as an opportunity to apply new or existing technologies in circular processes that allow for the valorization of previously considered waste solutions [1]. In this regard, Electrodialysis with bipolar membranes (EDBM) can be used to produce acidic and alkaline solutions from salty solutions. EDBM is an electro-membrane process distinguished by the alternated positio…

Inclusive, prompt and non-prompt J/ψ production at midrapidity in p-Pb collisions at √sNN = 5.02 TeV

2022

A measurement of inclusive, prompt, and non-prompt J/ψ production in p-Pb collisions at a nucleon-nucleon centre-of-mass energy √sNN = 5.02 TeV is presented. The inclusive J/ψ mesons are reconstructed in the dielectron decay channel at midrapidity down to a transverse momentum pT = 0. The inclusive J/ψ nuclear modification factor RpPb is calculated by comparing the new results in p-Pb collisions to a recently measured proton-proton reference at the same centre-of-mass energy. Non-prompt J/ψ mesons, which originate from the decay of beauty hadrons, are separated from promptly produced J/ψ on a statistical basis for pT larger than 1.0 GeV/c. These results are based on the data sample collecte…
