Zeolites for the nutrient recovery from wastewater
2023
To meet the growing food demand of the world population, excessive use of chemical fertilizers is occurring to improve soil fertility and crop production. The excessive use of chemical fertilizers is not economically and environmentally sustainable. Indeed, from one hand, due to the increasing demand of fertilizers is rising their costs whereas, on the other hand, the accumulation of fertilizers in wastewaters is altering the homeostasis of the ecosystems thus causing serious damages to human health [1,2]. The recovery of nutrients, such as nitrogen (N) and phosphorus (P), from wastewaters is a good option to counteract both economic and environmental issues raised by the excessive use of f…
Digital 3D tvilling
2023
Me…

Which direction should I go? A quest for understanding the effect of TMS stimulus orientation on evoked responses
2023
The orientation of the electric field (E-field) induced by transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) plays a significant role in determining the magnitude of motor evoked potentials (MEP) and TMS-evoked potentials (TEP). However, fundamental mechanisms explaining the interaction of the induced E-field and the underlying neuronal populations are still largely unknown. We recently entered a quest to understand and describe neurophysiological and physical factors affecting the effect of the E-field orientation on the MEP and TEP. We developed a dual-coil TMS transducer capable of fast and accurate electronic control of the induced E-field orientation. With this transducer, we could scan the effe…
Using self-assessment to enhance self-regulated learning : an intervention study in a Finnish lower secondary school
2023
The aim of this intervention study was to explore how the emphasised use of self-assessment in Swedish language classes affects ninth graders’ perceptions of self-regulated learning and their self-assessments in Finland. The dataset includes the survey responses of 36 students and their written self-assessments. The results suggest that the quality of the self-assessments increased during the intervention, although the level of reflection was still superficial. The students exhibited more positive perceptions of their skills in self-regulated learning at the end of the intervention. The results indicate that incorporating self-assessment into teaching boosts students’ perceptions of self-re…
Anticipation as Platform Power : The Temporal Structuring of Digital Everyday Life
2023
This article explores anticipation as a temporal structure in digital platforms. It contributes to the growing research of platformisation of everyday life by focusing on temporality as a central dimension of platform power, a key mechanism tying participants by structuring intimacies, socialities, and relations that platforms enable and engender. The article shows how the temporality of foreboding, prospecting and speculating about one’s own and other’s social media presence and actions permeates the user experience. Studying media diaries and interviews with participants from different social and occupational groups (politicians, actors, the unemployed, undocumented migrants), the article…
Eco-Anxiety, Connectedness to Nature & Green Equity Investments
2023
International audience; Drawing on a survey of 671 French individual investors, we document for the first time the connection between emotions towards the environment and investment in green funds. Both eco-anxiety and connectedness to nature have a significant impact on deciding to invest in green funds, but, interestingly, do not exert any influence on the amount invested. Hence, investing in green funds seems to be a way to buy a good conscience towards the environment, but the good deed ends there since the amount itself is not linked to environmentally related emotions.

Understanding altered contractile properties in advanced age : insights from a systematic muscle modelling approach
2023
Age-related alterations of skeletal muscle are numerous and present inconsistently, and the effect of their interaction on contractile performance can be nonintuitive. Hill-type muscle models predict muscle force according to well-characterised contractile phenomena. Coupled with simple, yet reasonably realistic activation dynamics, such models consist of parameters that are meaningfully linked to fundamental aspects of muscle excitation and contraction. We aimed to illustrate the utility of a muscle model for elucidating relevant mechanisms and predicting changes in output by simulating the individual and combined effects on isometric force of several known ageing-related adaptations. Simu…
GREEN ACCOUNTING IN NORWEGIAN CONSTRUCTION
2023
This master’s thesis aims to explore the application of Environmental Management Accounting (EMA) in the Norwegian construction industry. EMA is an accounting method that assists companies in identifying, measuring, and managing their environmental impacts, costs, and benefits. With the introduction of the Corporate Sustainable Reporting Directive (CSRD) in the EU, more actors in the industry will be required to report in accordance with the European Sustainability Reporting Standards (ESRS), which include Environmental, Social & Governance (ESG) reporting requirements. To achieve the objectives of the thesis, a qualitative multi-case study has been conducted, involving five selected actors…
Designing a species-specific method, based on analysis of eDNA, for detection of lesser weever fish, and testing it at chosen locations along the coa…
2023
Temperature is largely influencing species dispersion, and when the temperature conditions within an area are changing, species populations often respond by moving to other, more suitable areas. Such behavior has often been observed in marine species, because of increased water temperatures in the ocean. Throughout the Northeastern Atlantic Ocean, including the North Sea and Skagerrak, increased water temperatures have been registered over the last three decades, which are likely to have affected the availability of suitable habitats for various fish species, and therefore their local presence. This could explain how the warm water fish species lesser weever, Echiichthys vipera, over the pa…
In deep water: Long-term trends in demersal fish diversity in Skagerrak and the Norwegian trench
2023
Throughout history, human activities have had profound impacts on marine ecosystems, with clear evidence of these consequences observable in the Skagerrak region. Oceans have historically been a critical resource for humankind, supplying food for the world's population. However, unsustainable practices such as overfishing and the emission of CO2, which leads to increased sea temperatures, have jeopardized this valuable resource. The current study investigates changes in biodiversity and population size of various fish species in deep water areas of Skagerrak. The data is obtained from the Norwegian Bottom Trawl Survey for Northern Shrimp (Pandalus borealis) in Skagerrak and the Norwegian De…
Bounds on the number of maximal subgroups of finite groups

In this paper we obtain significant bounds for the number of maximal subgroups of a given index of a finite group. These results allow us to give new bounds for the number of random generators needed to generate a finite $d$-generated group with high probability.
Integrated Reporting and Strategic Decision-Making
2023
Abstract Senior executives are faced with more difficult strategic choices as a result of complex, dynamic markets, increased climate risk, and a shift in investor focus toward sustainability issues. The idea of "business as usual" is no longer appropriate, and businesses now need to consider a variety of factors when making decisions. The purpose of this thesis is to examine how managers' strategic decision-making can be aided by integrated reporting and, more importantly, integrated thinking. The existing literature regarding integrated reporting and its impact on strategic decision-making is carefully evaluated in order to identify areas where more research is needed. Ultimately, a frame…

Climate Change Impact on the Hydropower Potential in Agder County
2023
Climate change poses significant uncertainties for the future of hydropower, both in terms of challenges and opportunities. This study uses an educational version of the HBV model to investigate climate change impact on the hydropower potential in Agder County over the next century. The results show that the model tends to overestimate the observed values, but results in a Nash-Sutcliffe efficiency of 73.4\% for calibration and 77.7\% for validation with a correlation of 89.0\%. This indicates that the model's simplicity does not surpass its accuracy. For annual discharge the study found that the RCP4.5 scenario predicted a 9\% increase close to 2100. The RCP8.5 scenario projected a more si…

Sequential Iron-Catalyzed C(sp2)–C(sp3) Cross-Coupling of Chlorobenzamides/Chemoselective Amide Reduction and Reductive Deuteration to Benzylic Alcoh…
2023
Benzylic alcohols are among the most important intermediates in organic synthesis. Recently, the use of abundant metals has attracted significant attention due to the issues with the scarcity of platinum group metals. Herein, we report a sequential method for the synthesis of benzylic alcohols by a merger of iron catalyzed cross-coupling and highly chemoselective reduction of benzamides promoted by sodium dispersion in the presence of alcoholic donors. The method has been further extended to the synthesis of deuterated benzylic alcohols. The iron-catalyzed Kumada cross-coupling exploits the high stability of benzamide bonds, enabling challenging C(sp2)–C(sp3) cross-coupling with alkyl Grign…

Thermodynamic analysis of the interactions between human ACE2 and spike RBD of Betacoronaviruses (SARS-CoV-1 and SARS-CoV-2)
2023
There are many scientific reports on the interaction of the SARS-CoV-2 virus S protein (and its RBD) with the human ACE2 receptor protein. However, there are no reliable data on how this interaction differs from the interaction of the receptor binding domain of SARS-CoV-1 with ACE2, in terms of binding strength and changes in reaction enthalpy and entropy. Our studies have revealed these differences and the impact of zinc ions on this interaction. Intriguingly, the binding affinity of both RBDs (of SARS-CoV-1 and of SARS-CoV-2) to the ACE2 receptor protein is almost identical; however, there are some differences in the entropic and enthalpic contributions to these interactions.
Assessment of students’ agency in Finnish and Spanish university courses: Analysis of measurement invariance
2023
This study reports on the measurement invariance of the Agency of University Students Scale in data consisting of Finnish and Spanish university students (n = 645) and presents cross-national findings on student agency assessment. Multigroup confirmatory factor analysis confirmed the metric invariance for 10 factors, which allows comparisons of covariance structures and correlation analyses, and can, for example, be used to examine background factor effects on agency across groups. At least partial scalar invariance was confirmed for six factors, allowing comparisons of mean values between Finnish and Spanish students. Differences were found in the experiences of personal and relational res…
Pulsed electric field (PEF) recovery of biomolecules from Chlorella: Extract efficiency, nutrient relative value, and algae morphology analysis
2023
This study investigated the effects of pulsed electric field (PEF) (3 kV/cm, 44 pulses, 99 kJ/kg), solvent (H2O or 50 % DMSO) and time (0, 10, 20, 30, 60, 90, 120 and 180 min) on the extraction of Chlorella antioxidant biomolecules and minerals. The results showed that PEF treatment increased the biomolecules recovery. For the extraction time of 120 min, more proteins and polyphenols were obtained using water, while more chlorophyll a and b, and carotenoids were obtained using 50 % DMSO as the extraction solvent. The extracts mineral concentration (PEF vs control) were analysed including Mg, P, Ca, Fe and Zn, and the Relative Nutrient Values results indicated that Chlorella H2O-extracts cou…

Pattern formation in hyperbolic reaction-transport systems and applications to dryland ecology
2023
Pattern formation and modulation is an active branch of mathematics, not only from the perspective of fundamental theory but also for its huge applications in many fields of physics, ecology, chemistry, biology, and other sciences. In this thesis, the occurrence of Turing and wave instabilities, giving rise to stationary and oscillatory patterns, respectively, is theoretically investigated by means of two-compartment reaction-transport hyperbolic systems. The goal is to elucidate the role of inertial times, which are introduced in hyperbolic models to account for the finite-time propagation of disturbances, in stationary and transient dynamics, in supercritical and subcritical regimes. In p…
