Parametric assessment of myocardial perfusion by densitometric evaluation of digital subtraction coronary angiograms: a comparison with tomographic TL-201 scintigraphy results

Densitometric results about local myocardial perfusion are compared with those derived from a quantitative analysis of TL-201 single photon emission computer tomograms (TL-201 SPECT). Ten patients underwent conventional TL-201 SPECT at rest and after maximum bicycle stress and dipyridamole infusion the day prior to the investigation. SPECT was applied to provide improved spatial resolution for the detection of perfusion abnormalities. During the catheterization procedure four digital subtraction coronary angiograms were performed, two of the left and two of the right coronary artery both before and after pharmacologically induced hyperemia by intracoronary papaverine. The densitometric para…

Measurement of the W→τντ cross section in pp collisions at s=7 TeV with the ATLAS experiment

The cross section for the production of W bosons with subsequent decay W to tau nu is measured with the ATLAS detector at the LHC. The analysis is based on a data sample that was recorded in 2010 at a proton-proton center-of-mass energy of sqrt(s) = 7 TeV and corresponds to an integrated luminosity of 34 pb^-1. The cross section is measured in a region of high detector acceptance and then extrapolated to the full phase space. The product of the total W production cross section and the W to tau nu branching ratio is measured to be 11.1 +/- 0.3 (stat) +/- 1.7 (syst) +/- 0.4 (lumi) nb.

Performance of jet substructure techniques for large-$R$ jets in proton-proton collisions at $\sqrt{s}$ = 7 TeV using the ATLAS detector

This paper presents the application of a variety of techniques to study jet substructure. The performance of various modified jet algorithms, or jet grooming techniques, for several jet types and event topologies is investigated for jets with transverse momentum larger than 300 GeV. Properties of jets subjected to the mass-drop filtering, trimming, and pruning algorithms are found to have a reduced sensitivity to multiple proton-proton interactions, are more stable at high luminosity and improve the physics potential of searches for heavy boosted objects. Studies of the expected discrimination power of jet mass and jet substructure observables in searches for new physics are also presented.…

Search for the pair production of scalar top quarks in the acoplanar charm jet final state in collisions at

A search for the pair production of scalar top quarks, {bar t}, has been performed in 360 pb{sup -1} of data from p{bar p} collisions at a center-of-mass energy of 1.96 TeV, collected by the D0 detector at the Fermilab Tevatron collider. The {bar t} decay mode considered is {bar t} {yields} c{bar {chi}}{sub 1}{sup 0}, where {bar {chi}}{sub 1}{sup 0} is the lightest supersymmetric particle. The topology analyzed therefore consists of a pair of acoplanar heavy-flavor jets with missing transverse energy. The data show good agreement with the standard model expectation, and a 95% C.L. exclusion domain in the (m{sub {tilde t}}, m{sub {tilde {chi}}{sub 1}{sup 0}}) plane has been determined, exten…

A microphysics guide to cirrus clouds - Part 1: Cirrus types

Abstract. The microphysical and radiative properties of cirrus clouds continue to be beyond understanding and thus still represent one of the largest uncertainties in the prediction of the Earth's climate (IPCC, 2013). Our study aims to provide a guide to cirrus microphysics, which is compiled from an extensive set of model simulations, covering the broad range of atmospheric conditions for cirrus formation and evolution. The model results are portrayed in the same parameter space as field measurements, i.e., in the Ice Water Content-Temperature (IWC-T) parameter space. We validate this cirrus analysis approach by evaluating cirrus data sets from 17 aircraft campaigns, conducted in the last…

Importance of calibration for diameter and area determination by intravascular ultrasound

Intravascular ultrasound (IVUS) permits quantitative assessment of the lumen diameter and area of coronary arteries. The experimental study was performed to evaluate the accuracy of diameter and area measurements.Lumen quantitation (lumen diameter D and cross-sectional area A) in lucite tubes (lumen diameter 2.5 to 5.7 mm, Plexiglas) was performed using a mechanical IVUS system (HP console, 3.5 F catheter, Boston Scientific, 30 MHz). The influence of fluid type (blood, water and saline solution), fluid temperature (20 degrees C/37 degrees C), catheter to catheter variation, gain setting and ultrasound frequency (12, 20 and 30 MHz) was determined. Acute dialysis: PMN-elastase as a new parameter for controlling individual anticoagulation with low molecular weight heparin (Fragmin).

Despite the improvements in the development of dialyzer membranes with greater hemocompatibility, an activation of the coagulation system occurs when blood comes into contact with exogenous surfaces. The large number of heparin dosage regimens demonstrate the difficulty to adapt general therapeutic guidelines. Low molecular weight heparin (Fragmin®) was administered as a single bolus dose for anticoagulation during 58 acute dialyses. Anti-Xa-activity, the plasma levels of the lysosomal elastase of the polymorphnuclear granulocytes (“PMN-elastase”) and of the thrombin-antithrombin III-complex (TAT) were measured at hourly intervals. Search for light top squark pair production in final states with leptons and b-jets with the ATLAS detector in s=7 TeV proton–proton collisions

The results of a search for pair production of light top squarks are presented, using 4.7 fb(-1) of root s = 7 TeV proton-proton collisions collected with the ATLAS detector at the Large Hadron Collider. This search targets top squarks with masses similar to, or lighter than, the top quark mass. Final states containing exclusively one or two leptons (e, mu), large missing transverse momentum, light-flavour jets and b-jets are used to reconstruct the top squark pair system. Event-based mass scale variables are used to separate the signal from a large t (t) over bar background. No excess over the Standard Model expectations is found. The results are interpreted in the framework of the Minimal…

Imaging of vascular structures by intracoronary ultrasound (ICUS) is finding more and more applications in coronary diagnosis and in the assessment of interventional access. The authors describe a method for easy and quick production of tissue-equivalent vessel phantoms from a special hydrocolloid. The mechanical tolerance is less than 3/100 mm. With these phantoms the authors tested the calibration and measured the resolution properties of the SONOS intravascular ultrasonic system (Hewlett Packard). Measurement of the flavour composition of dijet events in pp collisions at √s = 7 TeV with the ATLAS detector

This paper describes a measurement of the flavour composition of dijet events produced in pp collisions at s√=7~TeVs=7~TeV using the ATLAS detector. The measurement uses the full 2010 data sample, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 39 pb−1. Six possible combinations of light, charm and bottom jets are identified in the dijet events, where the jet flavour is defined by the presence of bottom, charm or solely light flavour hadrons in the jet. Kinematic variables, based on the properties of displaced decay vertices and optimised for jet flavour identification, are used in a multidimensional template fit to measure the fractions of these dijet flavour states as functions of the leadin…

Jet mass and substructure of inclusive jets in $ \sqrt {s} = 7\;{\text{TeV}} $ pp collisions with the ATLAS experiment

Recent studies have highlighted the potential of jet substructure techniques to identify the hadronic decays of boosted heavy particles. In this article, this assumption is tested on an inclusive sample of jets recorded with the ATLAS detector in 2010, which corresponds to 35 pb-1 of pp collisions delivered by the LHC at √s = 7TeV. In a subsample of events with single pp collisions, measurements corrected for detector efficiency and resolution are presented with full systematic uncertainties. Indications for early PTCA after thrombolysis

There are several ways to reopen an acutely occluded coronary artery. Thrombolysis can be achieved with various methods (1, 5, 7, 10). After thrombolysis we find that the residual thrombus can sometimes be seen, but in most cases, a more or less high grade coronary stenosis remains (2). It is also a question of whether it is always optimal to reopen the vessel, because if the vessel remains occluded, another occlusion cannot occur. With this situation one faces the possibility that the patient will suffer another infarction, and that the vessel will occlude again (4).

Characterisation and mitigation of beam-induced backgrounds observed in the ATLAS detector during the 2011 proton-proton run

This paper presents a summary of beam-induced backgrounds observed in the ATLAS detector and discusses methods to tag and remove background contaminated events in data. Triggerrate based monitoring of beam-related backgrounds is presented. The correlations of backgrounds with machine conditions, such as residual pressure in the beam-pipe, are discussed. Results from dedicated beam-background simulations are shown, and their qualitative agreement with data is evaluated. Data taken during the passage of unpaired, i.e. non-colliding, proton bunches is used to obtain background-enriched data samples. These are used to identify characteristic features of beam-induced backgrounds, which then are …

Search for displaced vertices arising from decays of new heavy particles in 7 TeV pp collisions at ATLAS

We present the results of a search for new, heavy particles that decay at a significant distance from their production point into a final state containing charged hadrons in association with a high-momentum muon. The search is conducted in a pp-collision data sample with a center-of-mass energy of 7 TeV and an integrated luminosity of 33 pb[superscript −1] collected in 2010 by the ATLAS detector operating at the Large Hadron Collider. Production of such particles is expected in various scenarios of physics beyond the standard model. We observe no signal and place limits on the production cross-section of supersymmetric particles in an R-parity-violating scenario as a function of the neutral…

Since its introduction in 1977 [7, 8], PTCA has been widely used in patients with coronary artery disease. Restenosis with recurrence of angina remains the major problem, limiting the long-term success after PTCA. Reported restenosis rates vary from 17% to 47% [9–19, 22–26]. In larger series [12, 15, 26] a restenosis rate of about 30% was constantly found, irrespective of the definition of restenosis in use.

Two-body contributions to the effective mass in nuclear effective interactions

Starting from general expressions of well-chosen symmetric nuclear matter quantities derived for both zero- and finite-range effective theories, we derive the contributions to the effective mass. We first show that, independently of the range, the two-body contribution is enough to describe correctly the saturation mechanism but gives an effective mass value around $m^*/m \simeq 0.4$. Then, we show that the full interaction (by instance, an effective two-body density-dependent term on top of the pure two-body term) is needed to reach the accepted value $m^*/m \simeq 0.7-0.8$.

Both scalar top quarks are assumed to decay into a charm quark and a neutralino ($\tilde{\chi}^{0}_{1}$), where $\tilde{\chi}^{0}_{1}$ is the lightest supersymmetric particle. This leads to a final state with two acoplanar charm jets and missing transverse energy. We find the yield of such events to be consistent with the standard model expectation, and exclude sets of $\tilde{t}$ and $\tilde{\chi}^{0}_{1} $ masses at the 95% C.L. that substantially extend the domain excl…

The ionization signals in the liquid argon of the ATLAS electromagnetic calorimeter are studied in detail using cosmic muons. In particular, the drift time of the ionization electrons is measured and used to assess the intrinsic uniformity of the calorimeter gaps and estimate its impact on the constant term of the energy resolution. The drift times of electrons in the cells of the second layer of the calorimeter are uniform at the level of 1.3% in the barrel and 2.8% in the endcaps. This leads to an estimated contribution to the constant term of (0.29-0.04+0.05)% in the barrel and (0.54-0.04+0.06)% in the endcaps. The same data are used to measure the drift velocity of ionization electrons …

The importance of atrioventricular synchronous pacing compared with single-chamber rate-responsive pacing is still under discussion, especially for low-intensity workload representing daily life activities. We evaluated hemodynamics in single-lead VDD pacing versus VVIR pacing in 11 patients (8 men and 3 women, aged 58.6 +/- 13.8 years) with normal left ventricular function and a previously implanted single-lead VDDR pacemaker. A low-intensity steady-state treadmill test at 1 to 2.5 mph with a gradient of 2% to 4% was performed. Cardiac output was determined using a standard carbon dioxide rebreathing technique. Initially, the VDD mode was programmed, and after 5 minutes of exercise, cardia…

Search for techniparticles in e +jets events at D0

We search for the technicolor process ppbar -> rho_T/omega_T ->W+pi_T in events containing one electron and two jets, in data corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 390 pb-1, recorded by the D0 experiment at the Fermilab Tevatron. Technicolor predicts that technipions, pi_T, decay dominantly into b-bbar, b-cbar, or bbar-c, depending on their charge. In these events b and c quarks are identified by their secondary decay vertices within jets. Two analysis methods based on topological variables are presented. Since no excess above the standard model prediction was found, the result is presented as an exclusion in the pi_T vs. rho_T mass plane for a given set of model parameters.

Detection of dissection of the aortic intima and media after angioplasty of coarctation of the aorta. An angiographic, computer tomographic, and echocardiographic comparative study.

Balloon coarctation angioplasty (BCA) was performed in eight patients (five male and three female) who were 14-49 years old (mean, 27.3 years) with isolated discrete unoperated coarctation of the aorta (n = 7) and postoperative recoarctation (n = 1). BCA was successful in seven of eight patients, resulting in a decrease in the gradient (64 +/- 19 to 16 +/- 13 mm Hg, p less than 0.01), an increase in the diameter at the coarctation site (0.9 +/- 0.4 to 1.6 +/- 0.4 mm, p less than 0.01). Follow-up (6 months) has demonstrated continued gradient relief (6 +/- 9 mm Hg) and diameter increase (1.6 +/- 0.2 cm). Monitoring was performed by transesophageal echocardiography (TEE) during BCA, and befor…

Spectral estimators for Doppler analysis of intracoronary ultrasound catheters

With the zero-cross-detection method (ZCD) it has been shown that it is not possible to achieve a reproducible quantitative, and robust evaluation of an inter-coronary audio signal. The authors define spectral estimators to analyze the Doppler-audio signal. Measurements in a blood flow model have shown that the ZCD method underestimates the expected velocity at all speeds. Spectral analysis allows the determination of the actual and peak velocity more robustly and precisely. >

Measurement of the ratios of the Z/γ∗+⩾n jet production cross sections to the total inclusive Z/γ∗ cross section in pp¯ collisions at s=1.96 TeV

We present a study of events with Z bosons and jets produced at the Fermilab Tevatron Collider in ppbar collisions at a center of mass energy of 1.96 TeV. The data sample consists of nearly 14,000 Z/G* -> e+e- candidates corresponding to the integrated luminosity of 340 pb-1 collected using the D0 detector. Ratios of the Z/G* + >= n jet cross sections to the total inclusive Z/G* cross section have been measured for n = 1 to 4 jet events. Our measurements are found to be in good agreement with a next-to-leading order QCD calculation and with a tree-level QCD prediction with parton shower simulation and hadronization.

Intracoronary application of C1 esterase inhibitor improves cardiac function and reduces myocardial necrosis in an experimental model of ischemia and reperfusion.

Background Myocardial injury from ischemia can be aggravated by reperfusion of the jeopardized area. The precise underlying mechanisms have not been clearly defined, but proinflammatory events, including complement activation, leukocyte adhesion, and infiltration and release of diverse mediators, probably play important roles. The present study addresses the possibility of reducing reperfusion damage by the application of C1 esterase inhibitor (C1-INH). Methods and Results Cardioprotection by C1-INH 20 IU/kg IC was examined in a pig model with 60 minutes of coronary occlusion, followed by 120 minutes of reperfusion. Measurement of the Semileptonic Branching Ratio ofBs0to an Orbitally ExcitedDs**State:Br(Bs0→Ds1−(2536)μ+νX)

In a data sample of approximately 1.3 fb-1 collected with the D0 detector between 2002 and 2006, the orbitally excited charm state D_s1(2536) has been observed with a measured mass of 2535.7 +/- 0.6 (stat) +/- 0.5 (syst) MeV via the decay mode B0_s -> D_s1(2536) mu nu X. A first measurement is made of the branching ratio product Br(b(bar) -> D_s1(2536) mu nu X).Br(D_s1(2536)->D* K0_S). Assuming that D_s1(2536) production in semileptonic decay is entirely from B0_s, an extraction of the semileptonic branching ratio Br(B0_s -> D_s1(2536) mu nu X) is made.

Both scalar top quarks are assumed to decay into a b quark, a charged lepton and a scalar neutrino. The search is performed in the electron plus muon and dielectron final states. The signal topology consists of two isolated leptons, missing transverse energy, and jets. We find no evidence for this process and exclude regions of parameter space in the framework of the minimal supersymmetric…

This results in some technical advantages and in an improved discrimination of regions of the echo image that are enhanced by echo contrast material. >

Ultimately a stable 2/1 atrioventricular block was induced when three successive shocks of 400 W were applied. The first shock was given in that position with the largest His-potential deflection. The other two shocks were applied at catheter positions more distal and more proximal from the first one, respectively. We suppose that the initial lack of success was due to an atypical atrioventricular junction anatomy.

The data were recorded with the ATLAS detector at the LHC during 2011 and correspond to an integrated luminosity of 4.6 fb−14.6 fb^(−1). No significant excess above the Standard Model expectation is observed, and exclusions at 95% confidence level are placed on the cross section times branching ratio for the production of an R-parity-violating supersymmetric tau sneutrino. For a sneutrino mass of 500 (2000) GeV, the observed limits on the production cross section times branching ratio are 3.2 (1.4) fb, 42 (17) fb, and 40 (1…

Measurement of the production cross section of jets in association with a Z boson in pp collisions at $\sqrt{s}$ = 7 TeV with the ATLAS detector

Measurements of the production of jets of particles in association with a Z boson in pp collisions at s√ = 7 TeV are presented, using data corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 4.6 fb[superscript −1] collected by the ATLAS experiment at the Large Hadron Collider. Inclusive and differential jet cross sections in Z events, with Z decaying into electron or muon pairs, are measured for jets with transverse momentum p [subscript T] > 30 GeV and rapidity |y| < 4.4. The results are compared to next-to-leading-order perturbative QCD calculations, and to predictions from different Monte Carlo generators based on leading-order and next-to-leading-order matrix elements supplemented by parton sh…

ATLAS measurements of the properties of jets for boosted particle searches

Measurements are presented of the properties of high transverse momentum jets, produced in proton-proton collisions at a center-of-mass energy of √s=7  TeV. The data correspond to an integrated luminosity of 35  pb−1 and were collected with the ATLAS detector in 2010. Jet mass, width, eccentricity, planar flow and angularity are measured for jets reconstructed using the anti-kt algorithm with distance parameters R=0.6 and 1.0, with transverse momentum pT>300  GeV and pseudorapidity |η|<2. The measurements are compared to the expectations of Monte Carlo generators that match leading-logarithmic parton showers to leading-order, or next-to-leading-order, matrix elements. The generators describ…

Search for a heavy neutral particle decaying into an electron and a muon using 1 fb−1 of ATLAS data

A search is presented for a high mass neutral particle that decays directly to the e±μ∓ final state. The data sample was recorded by the ATLAS detector in s√=7~TeVpp collisions at the LHC from March to June 2011 and corresponds to an integrated luminosity of 1.07 fb−1. The data are found to be consistent with the Standard Model background. The high e±μ∓ mass region is used to set 95% confidence level upper limits on the production of two possible new physics processes: tau sneutrinos in an R-parity violating supersymmetric model and Z′-like vector bosons in a lepton flavor violating model.

Measurement of the top quark charge in pp collisions at sqrt(s) = 7 TeV with the ATLAS detector

A measurement of the top quark electric charge is carried out in the ATLAS experiment at the Large Hadron Collider using 2.05 fb[superscript −1] of data at a centre-of-mass energy of 7 TeV. In units of the elementary electric charge, the top quark charge is determined to be 0.64 ± 0.02 (stat.) ± 0.08 (syst.) from the charges of the top quark decay products in single lepton t[¯ over t] candidate events. This excludes models that propose a heavy quark of electric charge −4/3, instead of the Standard Model top quark, with a significance of more than 8σ.

Measurement of inclusive jet and dijet cross sections in proton-proton collisions at 7 TeV centre-of-mass energy with the ATLAS detector

Jet cross sections have been measured for the first time in proton-proton collisions at a centre-of-mass energy of 7 TeV using the ATLAS detector. The measurement uses an integrated luminosity of 17 nb−1 recorded at the Large Hadron Collider. The anti-k t algorithm is used to identify jets, with two jet resolution parameters, R=0.4 and 0.6. The dominant uncertainty comes from the jet energy scale, which is determined to within 7% for central jets above 60 GeV transverse momentum. Inclusive single-jet differential cross sections are presented as functions of jet transverse momentum and rapidity. Dijet cross sections are presented as functions of dijet mass and the angular variable χ. The res…

The authors have explored alternative techniques to be used instead of the usual side-by-side comparison, where the information contained in both images is perceived in a single image, preserving the context between compression errors and image structures. Thus fast and easy comparison can be done. These techniques make use of the human ability to perceive information also in the dimensions of color, space, and time. A study was performed with JPEG-compressed coronary angiographic images. Changes in the resulting images for six compression factors from 7 to 30 were sc…

Search for supersymmetry in di-photon final states at s=1.96 TeV

We report results of a search for supersymmetry (SUSY) with gauge-mediated symmetry breaking in di-photon events collected by the DO experiment at the Fermilab Tevatron Collider in 2002-2006. In 1.1 fb(-1) of data, we find no significant excess beyond the background expected from the standard model and set the most stringent lower limits to date for a standard benchmark model on the lightest neutralino and chargino masses of 125 GeV and 229 GeV, respectively, at 95% confidence.

Comparison of myocardial perfusion reserve before and after coronary balloon predilatation and after stent implantation in patients with postangioplasty restenosis.

Background Stents provide a scaffold for coronary arteries after angioplasty and inhibit elastic recoil. Methods and Results In 25 patients with postangioplasty restenosis of the left anterior descending artery, ECG-gated digital subtraction coronary angiograms were recorded at baseline and during hyperemia (12 mg papaverine IC) before and after balloon predilatation (PTCA), after implantation of a Palmaz-Schatz stent, and after 6 months. Densitometric evaluation revealed different time and density parameters to calculate two definitions of myocardial perfusion reserve (MPR1 and MPR2) and maximum flow ratio (MaxFR). Poststenotic MPR1 increased from 1.57±0.14 to 2.59±0.86 after PTCA and to …

Recanalization of Totally Occluded Coronary Vessels by Percutaneous Transluminal Coronary Angioplasty

Since its introduction in 1977, percutaneous transluminal coronary angioplasty (PTCA) has become an effective approach for treatment of patients with single-vessel disease [1–3, 5]. Treatment of double- and multiple-vessel disease has also been attempted [5, 6]. In patients with angina pectoris total occlusion of coronary vessels is found, and PTCA has also been used in an attempt to restore coronary blood flow in such patients [8, 10]. Even main stem occlusions have been recanalized [11]. In patients with total occlusion of coronary vessels, collateral flow is sufficient to maintain cardiac function at rest but not during exercise [12–14]. Therefore, PTCA seems to be an ideal method for re…

Search for particles decaying into a Z boson and a photon in pp¯ collisions at s=1.96 TeV

Abstract We present the results of a search for a new particle X produced in p p ¯ collisions at s = 1.96 TeV and subsequently decaying to Zγ. The search uses 0.3 fb−1 of data collected with the DO detector at the Fermilab Tevatron Collider. We set limits on the production cross section times the branching fraction σ ( p p ¯ → X ) × B ( X → Z γ ) that range from 0.4 to 3.5 pb at the 95% C.L. for X with invariant masses between 100 and 1000 GeV / c 2 , over a wide range of X decay widths.

Detection of spontaneous echocardiographic contrast within the left atrium by transesophageal echocardiography: spontaneous echocardiographic contrast

Transesophageal echocardiography was performed in 314 patients over a period of 24 months using a 3.5 MHz phased-array system fitted to the distal end of a conventional 12 mm endoscope. In 12 patients (2.6%) transesophageal echocardiography could not be performed because of adverse reaction to the gastroscopic procedure. Side effects were a transient A-V block in one patient and asthmatic attack in another. Mitral valve lesions were found in 99 of 314 patients. Parametric assessment of myocardial perfusion during interventional cardiac catheterization by means of X-ray densitometry-short-and long-term results.

X-ray densitometric evaluation of digital subtraction angiocardiograms allows an assessment of myocardial perfusion by means of the parameter 'MEAN RISE TIME' (MRT), defined as the time from the onset of local myocardial contrast medium opacification to the point of maximum opacification. Best results are obtained when the response of that parameter is compared before and after stimulation of coronary flow by papaverine. A prolongation of this parameter, especially after papaverine, was indicative of an impairment of myocardial perfusion, when compared to the results of TL-201 scintigraphy. In 50 patients with single vessel coronary artery disease the results of MRT pre and post papaverine …

Intravascular ultrasound detected classification of coronary lesions as a predictor of dissections after balloon angioplasty.

Dissection after balloon angioplasty of coronary arteries may give rise to an unfavourable early outcome. Compared with coronary angiography, intravascular ultrasound (IVUS) allows more detailed characterisation of dissections. We investigated the incidence and type of dissections after balloon angioplasty in calcified coronary lesions. IVUS was performed in 43 patients with 48 lesions before and after percutaneous balloon angioplasty. Significant calcification was defined as an arc of more than 90 degrees with typical acoustic shadowing. Dissections were classified as type A when the media was not involved by the dissection and as type B when media involvement had occurred. In the group wi…

The fraction of dijet events that survive the jet veto is presented for boundary jets that are separated by up to six units of rapidity and with mean transverse momentum 50 < p¯T < 500 GeV. The mean multiplicity of jets above the veto scale in the rapidity interval bounded by the dijet system is also presented as an alternative method for quantifying perturbative QCD emission. Factors controlling plankton community production, export flux, and particulate matter stoichiometry in the coastal upwelling system off Peru

Eastern boundary upwelling systems (EBUS) are among the most productive marine ecosystems on Earth. The production of organic material is fueled by upwelling of nutrient-rich deep waters and high incident light at the sea surface. However, biotic and abiotic factors can modify surface production and related biogeochemical processes. Determining these factors is important because EBUS are considered hotspots of climate change, and reliable predictions of their future functioning requires understanding of the mechanisms driving the biogeochemical cycles therein. Early diagnosis is advantageous, and abscesses should be expected in 5%-30% of patients with echocardiographically discernible vegetations. Since there is no 'abscess typical' organism, transoesophageal echocardiographic examination is helpful at the first indication of infective endocarditis, to identify high-risk patients. Mechanism of reperfusion damage after thrombolysis and ‘direct PTCA’

Summary There is general agreement between cardiologists, that reperfusion of the infarct related coronary artery (PTCA) is the method of choice for the treatment of an acute myocardial infarction. However, the method utilized for inducing a rapid and complete reperfusion is still discussed. Even if thrombolysis will remain the method of choice for the major part of the population, part of the patient cohort with acute infarction will be treated by direct PTCA. Rapid reperfusion of ischemic myocardium reduces infarct size by limiting infarct extension into the entire area at risk, although a reperfusion damage is induced in the core ischemic area. This reperfusion damage has been convincing…

Ambulatory follow-up of aortic dissection by transesophageal two-dimensional and color-coded Doppler echocardiography.

Follow-up of 18 patients with aortic dissection (five with type I, one with type II, 11 with type III dissection according to DeBakey) by transesophageal, two-dimensional and color-coded Doppler echocardiography showed a persistence of the false lumen in five of seven patients (71%) after surgery and in nine of 11 patients (82%) after medical therapy. In two patients treated with surgery, the dissected part of the aorta had been resected, whereas in two patients treated medically, a progressive and complete obliteration of the false lumen was observed. In the false lumen, thrombus formation was absent in four, localized in four, and progressive in six patients. Flow within the false lumen c…

Search for excited electrons and muons in root s=8 TeV proton-proton collisions with the ATLAS detector

The ATLAS detector at the Large Hadron Collider is used to search for excited electrons and excited muons in the channel pp → ℓℓ* → ℓℓγ, assuming that excited leptons are produced via contact interactions. The analysis is based on 13 fb[superscript −1] of pp collisions at a centre-of-mass energy of 8 TeV. No evidence for excited leptons is found, and a limit is set at the 95% credibility level on the cross section times branching ratio as a function of the excited-lepton mass m[subscript ℓ*]. For m[subscript ℓ*] ≥ 0.8 TeV, the respective upper limits on σB(ℓ* → ℓγ) are 0.75 and 0.90 fb for the e* and μ* searches. Limits on σB are converted into lower bounds on the compositeness scale Λ. Search for a heavy Standard Model Higgs boson in the channel H→ZZ→ℓ+ℓ−qq¯ using the ATLAS detector

A search for a heavy Standard Model Higgs boson decaying via H -> ZZ -> l(+)l(-)q (q) over bar, where l = e, mu, is presented. The search is performed using a data set of pp collisions at root s = 7 TeV, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 1.04 fb(-1) collected in 2011 by the ATLAS detector at the CERN LHC collider. No significant excess of events above the estimated background is found. Upper limits at 95% confidence level on the production cross section (relative to that expected from the Standard Model) of a Higgs boson with a mass in the range between 200 and 600 GeV are derived. Within this mass range, there is at present insufficient sensitivity to exclude a Standard Model Hi…

Measurements of the electron and muon inclusive cross-sections in proton–proton collisions at s=7 TeV with the ATLAS detector

This Letter presents measurements of the differential cross-sections for inclusive electron and muon production in proton-proton collisions at a centre-of-mass energy of root s = 7 TeV, using data collected by the ATLAS detector at the LHC. The muon cross-section is measured as a function of p(T) in the range 4 < p(T) < 100 GeV and within pseudorapidity vertical bar eta vertical bar < 2.5. In addition the electron and muon cross-sections are measured in the range 7 < p(T) < 26 GeV and within vertical bar eta vertical bar < 2.0, excluding 1.37 < vertical bar eta vertical bar < 1.52. Integrated luminosities of 1.3 pb(-1) and 1.4 pb(-1) are used for the electron and muon measurements, respecti…

Measurement of the top quark-pair production cross section with ATLAS in pp collisions at $\sqrt{s}=7$ TeV

A measurement of the production cross-section for top quark pairs($\ttbar$) in $pp$ collisions at $\sqrt{s}=7 \TeV$ is presented using data recorded with the ATLAS detector at the Large Hadron Collider. Events are selected in two different topologies: single lepton (electron $e$ or muon $\mu$) with large missing transverse energy and at least four jets, and dilepton ($ee$, $\mu\mu$ or $e\mu$) with large missing transverse energy and at least two jets. In a data sample of 2.9 pb-1, 37 candidate events are observed in the single-lepton topology and 9 events in the dilepton topology. The corresponding expected backgrounds from non-$\ttbar$ Standard Model processes are estimated using data-driv…

Search for supersymmetry in pp collisions at s=7 TeV in final states with missing transverse momentum and b-jets

Results are presented of a search for supersymmetric particles in events with large missing transverse momentum and at least one heavy flavour jet candidate in sqrt{s} = 7 TeV proton-proton collisions. In a data sample corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 35 pb-1 recorded by the ATLAS experiment at the Large Hadron Collider, no significant excess is observed with respect to the prediction for Standard Model processes. For R-parity conserving models in which sbottoms (stops) are the only squarks to appear in the gluino decay cascade, gluino masses below 590 GeV (520 GeV) are excluded at the 95% C.L. The results are also interpreted in an MSUGRA/CMSSM supersymmetry breaking scenario w…

A search for t[bar over t] resonances in lepton+jets events with highly boosted top quarks collected in pp collisions at √s = 7 TeV with the ATLAS detector

A search for resonant production of high-mass top-quark pairs is performed on 2.05 fb[superscript −1] of proton-proton collisions at √s = 7 TeV collected in 2011 with the ATLAS experiment at the Large Hadron Collider. This analysis of the lepton+jets final state is specifically designed for the particular topology that arises from the decay of highly boosted top quarks. The observed t[bar over t] invariant mass spectrum is found to be compatible with the Standard Model prediction and 95% credibility level upper limits are derived on the t[bar over t] production rate through new massive states. An upper limit of 0.7 pb is set on the production cross section times branching fraction of a narr…

Experimental Discrimination between Charge2e/3Top Quark and Charge4e/3Exotic Quark Production Scenarios

We present the first experimental discrimination between the 2e/3 and 4e/3 top quark electric charge scenarios, using top quark pairs (ttbar) produced in ppbar collisions at sqrt{s}=1.96 TeV by the Fermilab Tevatron collider. We use 370 pb-1 of data collected by the D0 experiment and select events with at least one high transverse momentum electron or muon, high transverse energy imbalance, and four or more jets. We discriminate between b- and bbar-quark jets by using the charge and momenta of tracks within the jet cones. The data is consistent with the expected electric charge, |q|=2e/3. We exclude, at the 92% C.L., that the sample is solely due to the production of exotic quark pairs QQba…

Determination of myocardial perfusion and coronary flow reserve by densitometric measurements: a selective classification of regions of interest

To evaluate the functional effect of a coronary artery stenosis on the dependent myocardium, digitized coronary angiograms (DCAs) were recorded. The DCAs, acquired during heart catheterization, provide information about myocardial perfusion and coronary flow reserve of areas supplied by this coronary artery. For each analysis the myocardium is separated into different regions of interest (ROIs); 16 ROIs in the distribution of the LCA and 8 ROIs for the RCA. In addition to that, the ROIs of the diseased vessels are divided into ROIs which are proximal, within and distal to the stenosis. Using a semiautomatic procedure, densograms are constructed from which the parameter rise time is calculat…

Search for single production of scalar leptoquarks in pp¯ collisions decaying into muons and quarks with the D0 detector

We report on a search for second generation leptoquarks LQ_2 which decay into a muon plus quark in p\bar{p} collisions at a center-of-mass energy of sqrt{s} = 1.96 TeV in the D0 detector using an integrated luminosity of about 300 pb-1. No evidence for a leptoquark signal is observed and an upper bound on the product of the cross section for single leptoquark production times branching fraction beta into a quark and a muon was determined for second generation scalar leptoquarks as a function of the leptoquark mass. This result has been combined with a previously published D0 search for leptoquark pair production to obtain leptoquark mass limits as a function of the leptoquark-muon-quark cou…

Search for new phenomena in final states with large jet multiplicities and missing transverse momentum at s√=8 TeV proton-proton collisions using the ATLAS experiment

A search is presented for new particles decaying to large numbers (7 or more) of jets, with missing transverse momentum and no isolated electrons or muons. This analysis uses 20.3 fb[superscript −1] of pp collision data at s√ = 8 TeV collected by the ATLAS experiment at the Large Hadron Collider. The sensitivity of the search is enhanced by considering the number of b-tagged jets and the scalar sum of masses of large-radius jets in an event. No evidence is found for physics beyond the Standard Model. The results are interpreted in the context of various simplified supersymmetry-inspired models where gluinos are pair produced, as well as an mSUGRA/CMSSM model.
