Thermoanalytical studies on phases of D-mannitol

Abstract D-mannitol exists in several polymorphic crystalline forms. The conditions of crystallization are not well-defined, and in some cases mixtures of the different forms are obtained. In the DSC study the different forms melted nearly at the same temperature (166±°C). The heat of fusion of the k form was lower than those of the other forms. With slow heating rate (2 ° C min ) the δ form changed to k between 140 and 165 °C. The crystallization of D-mannitol from the melt gave from one to seven peaks in the DSC between 95 and 126 °C depending on cooling rates and the amounts of sample.

Bei der Simulation okologischer Systeme besteht grose Unsicherheit bezuglich der zu verwendenden Modellparameter und Modellgleichungen. Diese Unsicherheit kann mit den prohabilistischen Methoden der Risikoanalyse in die Modellaussage integriert werden. Anhand eines Modells zur Simulation des Pelagials (Freiwassers) eines Sees (SIM-PEL) wird gezeigt, das aufgrund von nichtlinearem komplexem Systemverhalten auch die Aussagen von Risikoanalysen mit zunehmenden Prognosezeithorizont an Qualitat verlieren. Im Vergleich mit anderen Modellen zeigt sich, daJ3 bedingt durch verschiedene Modellgleichungen selbst qualitative Prognosen des Systemverhaltens nur beschrankt moglich sind.

Hla-Bb,Dr3 Phenotype and the Antibody Response Against Epstein-Barr Virus

Antibodies against the viral capsid antigen (VCA) and nuclear antigens (EBNAs) of the Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) were determined in a sample of Sicilian population. A significant correlation was observed between HLA-BB,DR3 phenotype and reduced titres of antibodies to EBNAs, whereas HLA-BB,DR3 positive individuals displayed levels of antibodies to VCA comparable to those of HLA-BB,DR3 negative ones. These results further strenghten the suggestion that HLA-BB,DR3 positive subjects are low responders and that the depth of immune response depends on on the fashion of antigenic challenge.

Abstract In this paper, different methods of rare earth oxides deposition on the surface of AISI 304 steel are described: sol/gel, electrophoresis in aqueous or organic medium, OMCVD of rare earth β-diketonates. After the deposition, all the samples were reheated. This treatment was absolutely essential for a strengthening effect of the protective oxide scale. Oxidation of coated and non-coated samples was performed under isothermal and cyclic conditions. The effect of rare earth deposition is significant in isothermal conditions. Sensory and psychomotor functions were studied among 75-year-old men and women in three Nordic localities (Glostrup in Denmark, Gothenburg in Sweden, and Jyvaskyla in Finland) as part of a comparative study on functional capacity and health. Random samples were drawn from the population registers in Glostrup (n=550) and Gothenburg (n=450), whereas in Jyvaskyla all 75-year-old residents (n=388) were invited to participate in the study. Participation rates varied from 66.8% in Gothenburg to 79.1% in Jyvaskyla. This paper studies the didactic approach used in teaching Le Chatelier's Principle, showing that its usual formulation is ambiguous, and reports the way Chemistry textbooks use this principle in some specific cases with no mention of its limitations. The second part of this work analyses the strategies carried out by chemistry teachers when dealing with a specific equilibrium problem. It is shown how the usual methodology practised in both cases may lead to very important misconceptions, so a new methodological performance is proposed to achieve a real significative learning.

Limits on the production of scalar leptoquarks from $Z^0$ decays at LEP

A search has been made for pairs and for single production of scalar leptoquarks of the first and second generations using a data sample of 392000 Z0 decays from the DELPHI detector at LEP 1. No signal was found and limits on the leptoquark mass, production cross section and branching ratio were set. A mass limit at 95% confidence level of 45.5 GeV/c2 was obtained for leptoquark pair production. The search for the production of a single leptoquark probed the mass region above this limit and its results exclude first and second generation leptoquarks D0 with masses below 65 GeV/c2 and 73 GeV/c2 respectively, at 95% confidence level, assuming that the D0lq Yukawa coupling alpha(lambda) is equ…

According to official statistics, infectious diseases only play a minor role in German children. To test this assumption, 1685/3405 charts of a private pediatrician were randomly chosen for further evaluation. 1112/1685 children had been seen in the office during the study period, 934 of them because of an infectious disease (83%). 700/934 charts were further reviewed in a standardized fashion. Pharyngo-tonsillitis was the most frequent diagnosis (18.6%), followed by (non-obstructive) bronchitis (18.5%), infectious diseases of the skin (10.2%) and Otitis media (9.9%). The passive transfer of contact sensitivity using picryl chloride immune cells from H-2 syngenic BALB/c donors was analyzed in severe combined immunodeficiency (SCID) mice which lack functional T and B lymphocytes. H-2-restricted and antigen-specific contact sensitivity was transferred to SCID mice, and comparison between the level of contact sensitivity and the number of transferred cells showed a significantly more efficient transfer to SCID than to BALB/c mice. This study has been carried out to compare the presence of some organic compounds of long environmental persistance (OCLEP) and heavy metals, in sea water samples, with faecal pollution indicators. Along the Sicily coast line three sites with different grade of pollution (urban, agricultural, industrial) were sampled. 69 samples were obtained from October 1987 to May 1990. Only indicators of faecal pollution were found linked to human settlements, while the other investigated anthropogenic activity related substances were found independently from sampling area.
