International audience; Abstract: The thenar muscles and gastrocnemius of a patient with myotonic dystrophy were investigated, at rest, by phosphorus nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy. A decrease in phosphocreatine level and an increase in inorganic phosphate and phosphodiester levels were found in the gastrocnemius, which was clinically spared, whilst the thenar muscles, which were wasted and affected by myotonia, exhibited only an increased inorganic phosphate level and an elevated pH. These findings were comparable with those found in other muscular disorders, such as Duchenne's and Becker's dystrophies, as well as in limb girdle dystrophy. Small sized AVMs respond well to stereotactic radiosurgery, while larger AVMs do poorly with stereotactic radiosurgery or stereotactic fractionated radiotherapy. A combination of both methods is proposed for the treatment of these larger lesions.

Mit IBZM — einem mit Jod-123 markierten Benzamid — ist es erstmalig moglich, die Dopamin-D2-Rezeptoren mit der Single-Photonen-Emissions-Computertomographie (SPECT) darzustellen. Das trotz der fehlenden ab-soluten Quantifizierung mit SPECT diese Methode hilfreich sein kann fur die Messung der D2-Rezeptoren, wurde schon von der Arbeitsgruppe von Brucke [1] dargestellt. Gegenstand unserer eigenen Studien war die Untersuchung der D2-Rezeptorbesetzung (RB) unter Haloperidol, Benperidol und Clozapin im Zusammenhang mit klinischen Daten und Prolaktinspiegeln.

The departments for neuroradiology and neurosurgery intend to use computer aided methods for individual planning of operations in the sella region. Essential structures like the optic nerve, arteries, aneurysms, the pituitary stalk, ventricles, and tumors should be segmented, reconstructed and visualized. The computed 3D view shall simulate the neurosurgeon’s view through the operation microscope into the scene. This approach shall remedy the lack of available medical image analysis systems for neurosurgical intervention. The emphasis in this article will be on the segmentation algorithms and the impact of the system on daily neuroradiological work.

A highly-segmented ΔE-time-of-flight wall as forward detector of the 4π-system for charged particles at the SIS/ESR accelerator

Abstract At the SIS/ESR accelerator facility at GSI in Darmstadt the 4π-detector system FOPI is under construction at present. It is designed for the investigation of central collisions of heavy ions in the energy range up to 2 A GeV. As phase I of this detector a forward wall has been built and used in various experiments. It comprizes a total number of 764 scintillators with an additional shell of 188 thin ΔE -detectors in front of it and covers the full azimuth of the polar angles from 1° to 30°. The velocity and the nuclear charge of the fragments are determined by a combined time-of-flight and ΔE measurement.

Vertical distribution of planktonic rotifers is described in relation to temperature and oxygen in Lake La Cruz, a single-doline, closed karstic lake (121 m diameter and 25 m maximum depth) which shows iron meromixis. Samples were taken by peristaltic pumping at 10 cm depth intervals in the oxycline zone from June 1987 to September 1988. A model of rotifer vertical structure in stratified lakes is proposed. Rotifers concentrate their populations at the depths with intense gradients. Monte Carlo modelling of the polymer glass transition

We are proposing a lattice model with chemical input for the computer modelling of the polymer glass transition. The chemical input information is obtained by a coarse graining procedure applied to a microscopic model with full chemical detail. We use this information on Bisphenol-A-Polycarbonate to predict it's Vogel-Fulcher temperature out of a dynamic Monte Carlo Simulation. The microscopic structure of the lattice model is that of a genuine amorphous material, and the structural relaxation obeys the time temperature superposition.

In a search for an external validation of the negative syndrome construct and the attentional impairment item on Andreasen's scale, 49 unmedicated schizophrenic patients were administered the Span of Apprehension Test and a Continuous Performance Test with two levels of difficulty. This schizophrenic sample performed significantly more poorly on the attentional tests than a comparable group of 27 healthy control subjects. Abstract The effects of vanadate on the contractility of the guinea-pig isolated trachea was examined. Vanadate (0·1 Mm) produced a sustained contraction that was abolished in Ca2+-free EGTA (0·1 Mm)-containing physiological salt solution but was resistant to verapamil (1 μm). Vanadate (0·1 Mm) depressed tracheal responses to CaCl2 (in Ca2+-free depolarizing solution), KCl, acetylcholine, histamine and 5-hydroxytryptamine. For vanadate (10 μm), the inhibition of spasmogenic responses only reached statistical significance for histamine and 5-hydroxytryptamine. Red blood cell lysis photosensitized by two non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs Naproxen (NAP) and Ketoprofen (KPF) was investigated in the presence of β-cyclodextrin (β-Cyd). The photohaemolysis was inhibited by the addition of β-Cyd both for NAP and, to a lesser extent, for KPF. The protective action was found only in a restricted range of concentration of β-Cyd. Surgical treatment of posterior fossa tumors in infancy and childhood: techniques and results

In a collective of 72 children with tumors of the posterior fossa, the preoperative diagnosis, operation planning and performance, and use of additional procedures, like the preliminary ventricular drainage and interventriculostomy are described. The extent of intra- and postoperative complications is given. Postoperative lethality was 0% in the group operated on between 1979 and 1991. The responsible factors are discussed. The findings support the opinion of ALBRIGHT (1989) that the prognosis for such patients is most promising in the hands of a specialist in pediatric neurosurgery.
