First synthesis of the chiral mixed O/S ligands, 1,2-sulfinyl thiols: application as chiral proton sources in enantioselective protonations of enolates

Abstract A suitable method for the preparation of the chiral mixed O/S ligands 1,2-sulfinyl thiols is described. These compounds have then been used as a chiral proton source in the enantioselective protonation of 2-methyl tetralone enolate and the results are compared with those obtained from the analogous alcohols. A theoretical model is proposed to explain the different behaviors exhibited in the protonation reaction for each of these proton sources. Configurational assignments for the new chiral thiols have been carried out by means of X-ray analysis.

N-Biphenyl thioureas as carboxylate receptors. Effect of the ligand substituents on the geometry of the complexes

Abstract Six new biphenyl thiourea derivatives have been prepared to be used in carboxylate sensing. Experiments carried out with these ligands have demonstrated that the type of interaction with TBA carboxylates is strongly dependent on the substituents in the thiourea moiety. These interactions go from the formation of 1:1 hydrogen-bonded complexes to acid–base reactions. In addition, different geometries have been observed for the complexes being dependent on the conformations of the free ligands in solution.

Peptide-Capped Mesoporous Nanoparticles: Toward a more Efficient Internalization of Alendronate

[EN] Osteoporosis is an illness which appears when the osteoblast/osteoclast activities are unbalanced taking place bone resorption (caused by osteoclasts) in higher extension than bone formation (induced by osteoblasts). Alendronate is one of the most used drugs for osteoporosis treatment despite its scarce bioavailability. Here we present the synthesis and characterization of mesoporous gated nanoparticles (two sets) for the controlled release of alendronate. The first set of nanoparticles (S1) were loaded with sulforhodamine B and capped with a peptide that could be selectively hydrolyzed by cathepsin K enzyme (overexpressed in osteoclasts). The second set (S2) was functionalized with am…

Selective and sensitive colorimetric detection of the neurotransmitter serotonin based on the aggregation of bifunctionalised gold nanoparticles

[EN] We report a simple, sensitive and selective method for the colorimetric detection of serotonin (5-HT) in aqueous media using bifunctionalized gold nanoparticles (AuNPs). The probe (1) consisted of AuNPs functionalised with dithiobis(succinimidylpropionate) (DSP) and N-acetyl-l-cysteine (NALC). DSP was chosen to react with the amino group of 5-HT, whereas NALC was chosen to bind the hydroxyl group in 5-HT through hydrogen bonding and electrostatic interactions. A double interaction between nanoparticles and the hydroxyl and the amino group of serotonin led to interparticle-crosslinking aggregation. This, resulted in a colour change from red to blue that can be observed by the naked eye.…

Observation of electroluminescence at room temperature from a ruthenium(II) bis-terpyridine complex and its use for preparing light-emitting electrochemical cells.

A terpyridine ruthenium (II) complex containing a substituted and an unsubstituted terpyridine ligand was synthesized, and its luminescence properties were studied in a solid-state single-layer light-emitting electrochemical cell. The obtained devices emitted light of a very deep red color (CIE, x = 0.717 y = 0.282) at low external applied bias. It is the first example of an electroluminescence device based on a bis-chelated ruthenium complex. Its ambient atmosphere decay is remarkably different from analogous devices using tris-chelated ruthenium complexes.

Effect of Metal Complexation on the Conductance of Single-Molecular Wires Measured at Room Temperature

The present work aims to give insight into the effect that metal coordination has on the room-temperature conductance of molecular wires. For that purpose, we have designed a family of rigid, highly conductive ligands functionalized with different terminations (acetylthiols, pyridines, and ethynyl groups), in which the conformational changes induced by metal coordination are negligible. The single-molecule conductance features of this series of molecular wires and their corresponding Cu(I) complexes have been measured in break-junction setups at room temperature. Experimental and theoretical data show that no matter the anchoring group, in all cases metal coordination leads to a shift towar…

Selective Recognition and Sensing of Succinate vs. Other Aliphatic Dicarboxylates by Thiourea-Functionalized Gold Nanoparticles

Gold nanoparticles functionalized with thiourea moieties have been used as selective colorimetric sensors for the naked-eye detection of succinate versus other aliphatic dicarboxylates, all of them as their TBA salts. The detection process is based on the interparticle aggregation triggered by coordination of the end-carboxylates to the thiourea moieties of two different nanoparticles. This nanoparticle aggregation results in a batochromic shift of the plasmon resonance band and a visual color change from red to blue.

A new macrocyclic ligand, 3, which exhibits pH-induced conformational changes, has been prepared. This ligand consists of a crown ether derived from a trans-anti-trans 1,2,4,5-tetrasubstituted cyclohexane. Due to the stereochemistry of the substituents on the carbocyclic ring, two different low-energy conformations of the crown ether are possible. Ligand 3 has been studied in solution by 1H NMR spectroscopy at different values of pH and temperature, showing that the conformation of the crown ether, and thus its complexing ability, is strongly pH-dependent. The solid-state structure of the ligand has been determined by X-ray diffraction.

Optical mercury sensing using a benzothiazolium hemicyanine dye.

[structure: see text] The selectivity and sensitivity of a benzothiazolium hemicyanine dye toward mercury(II) in aqueous solutions are described. Mercury ions coordinate to the dye forming a 1:1 complex. This interaction induces a color change in the dye at micromolar concentrations of mercury. Furthermore, the color change and quenching of the dye emission are selective for mercury when compared with other ions such as lead(II), cadmium(II), zinc(II), or iron(II).

Self-Assembly of a Copper(II)-Based Metallosupramolecular Hexagon

The self-assembly of a 1:1 mixture of copper(II) ions and a rigid heteroditopic ligand L containing phen and terpy binding units gives rise in the solid state to green crystals of a hexanuclear metallamacrocycle 1. X-ray crystallography reveals that 1 consists of molecular hexagons of the grid-type family in which each metal ion is bound to two different ligands through the phen and terpy units, plus a weakly coordinated PF6 (-) anion in a highly distorted octahedral geometry. ES-MS studies of acetonitrile solutions of L and copper(II) in a 1:1 ratio show mixtures of polynuclear complexes in which trinuclear L3Cu3 species are predominant.

pH-Dependent ligands as carriers in transport experiments

Abstract Conformationally pH-regulated ligands have been used as carriers in transport experiments. The experiments were carried out through bulky membranes and the pH at the source phase and at the receiving phase were modified to study the ability of ligands to act as pH-regulated carriers. The influence of pH on transport efficiency seems to be related to its influence on conformational equilibrium. X-ray determination of one precursor compound has been useful for determining the stereochemistry of one of the carriers. To cite this article: A.M. Costero et al., C. R. Chimie 7 (2004).

Synthesis of Dienedioic and Tetraenedioic Acids by Oxidative Coupling of Unsaturated Carboxylic Acid Dienediolates by 1,2-Diiodoethane

Abstract Acyclic and cyclic unsaturated carboxylic acids 1 to 4 are most easily converted to unsaturated dicarboxylic acids 5 to 8 by oxidative coupling of their diene- or triene-diolates by 1,2-diiodoethane. This procedure improves formerly reported oxidations by iodine or silver salts.

Supplementary Material from Mesoporous silica microparticles gated with a bulky azo derivative for the controlled release of dyes/drugs in colon

Mesoporous silica microparticles were prepared, loaded with the dye safranin O (M-Saf) or with the drug budesonide (M-Bud) and capped by the grafting of a bulky azo derivative. Cargo release from M-Saf at different pH values (mimicking those found in the gastrointestinal tract (GIT)) in the absence or presence of sodium dithionite (a reducing agent mimicking azoreductase enzyme present in the colon) was tested. Negligible safranin O release was observed at pH 6.8 and 4.5, whereas a moderate delivery at pH 1.2 was noted and attributed to the hydrolysis of the urea bond that linked the azo derivative onto the external surface of the inorganic scaffold. Moreover, a marked release was observed …

Low-cost, portable open-source gas monitoring device based on chemosensory technology

[EN] We report herein the construction of an electronic device to perform the real-time digitalization of the color state of the optical chemosensors used in the detection of dangerous gases. To construct the device, we used open-source modular electronics, such as Arduino and Sparkfun components, as well as free and open-source software (FOSS). The basic principle of the operation of this device is the continuous color measurement of a chemosensor-doped sensing film, whose color changes in the presence of a specific gas. The chemosensor-sensing film can be prepared by using any of the widely available chemosensors for the desired gas. Color measurement is taken by two TCS230 color sensor I…

Imidazolate bridged Cu(II)-Cu(II) and Cu(II)-Zn(II) complexes of a terpyridinophane azamacrocycle: a solution and solid state study.

The dinuclear Cu2+ and Zn2+ as well as the mixed Cu2+-Zn2+ complexes of a 5,5''-pentaazaterpyridinophane ligand (L) are able to incorporate imidazolate (Im-) as a bridging ligand. The crystal structure of [Cu(2)L(Im)(Br)(H2O)](CF(3)SO(3))(2).3H2O (1) shows one copper coordinated by the three pyridine nitrogens of the terpyridine unit, one nitrogen of the imidazolate bridge (Im-) and one bromide anion occupying the axial position of a distorted square pyramid. The second copper atom is coordinated by the remaining imidazolate nitrogen, the three secondary nitrogens at the centre of the polyamine bridge and one water molecule that occupies the axial position. Magnetic measurements have been p…

Not always what closes best opens better: mesoporous nanoparticles capped with organic gates

ABSTRACT Four types of calcined MCM-41 silica nanoparticles, loaded with dyes and capped with different gating ensembles are prepared and characterized. N1 and N2 nanoparticles are loaded with rhodamine 6G and capped with bulky poly(ethylene glycol) derivatives bearing ester groups (1 and 2). N3-N4 nanoparticles are loaded with sulforhodamine B and capped with self-immolative derivatives bearing ester moieties. In the absence of esterase enzyme negligible cargo release from N1, N3 and N4 nanoparticles is observed whereas a remarkable release for N2 is obtained most likely due to the formation of an irregular coating on the outer surface of the nanoparticles. In contrast, a marked delivery i…

Nanosensor for Sensitive Detection of the New Psychedelic Drug 25I-NBOMe.

[EN] This work reports the synthesis, characterization, and sensing behavior of a hybrid nanodevice for the detection of the potent abuse drug 25I-NBOMe. The system is based on mesoporous silica nanoparticles, loaded with a fluorescent dye, functionalized with a serotonin derivative and capped with the 5-HT2A receptor antibody. In the presence of 25I-NBOMe the capping antibody is displaced, leading to pore opening and rhodamine B release. This delivery was ascribed to 5-HT2A receptor antibody detachment from the surface due to its stronger coordination with 25I-NBOMe present in the solution. The prepared nanodevice allowed the sensitive (limit of detection of 0.6 mm) and selective recogniti…
